This is the first available Dothraki dictionary. Dothraki is the language for the Dothraki pe-
ople, a nomadic war-mongering race that ride the aptly-named Dothraki Sea steppes in George
R.R. Martin’s series, A Song of Ice and Fire. It was created by David Peterson, of the Language
Creation Society, for the HBO adaptation of the series: all copyright belongs to HBO and the
LCS. This is a dictionary only of publicly made information, from posts on the LCS blog, the
original books, and personal emails. Words which have been created by David Peterson are
listed as DP - words created from the original book are listed as M. For more information, I
suggest both the forthcoming dothraki.org, and the Westeros language forum.
Bold indicates a Dothraki word. Italics indicate the English definition. Plain text indicates
grammatical categorisation: parentheses indicate extra information. Transitivity is marked if
known as vtr., intransitive as vin.: words marked v. are either unattested or ambitransitive,
or their transitivity is unable to be deduced. I have shown the IPA to the best of my abilities,
using Praat and the scattered information given by the LCS. Some transcriptions may have
allomorphs, as in [qoj] or [qh oj]. I have attempted to use only plain stems, but may have failed
in several cases. I have included the suffixes when they are known but not the original stem.
Stress has been indicated as much as can be guessed at using official rules, such as stress on
word-final syllables ending in a consonant, but the intonation rules for Dothraki are not fully
understood at this point. The words herein should be all that we have, but if you find more
words elsewhere, spot any errors or inconsistencies, or have any comments, please let me know
at lajaki at dothraki dot org. Thanks.
