MOC DESCRIPTION

No : MOC-CAP-2017-644
Plant : CA Plant
Tittle : D-740 re-place from PVC-FRP to Rubber Line Tank
Date of MOC : 16 February 2017

EXISTING
The Existing D-740 Sodium Hypochlorite Circulating/Process tank is made by UPVC
lined FRP material. This tank holds 20% caustic soda solution and then start a process circulation
(discharging and receiving) in reaction the fluid with chlorine gas in T-730. After enough time, the
process results the service fluid become about 7% remain caustic soda + 13% hypochlorite
solution. The operating temperature and pressure of the tank are about 70 °C and atmospheric
condition.
D-740 was built in 1997 and now the condition is very worst. So many crack/leak point
inside tank and this tank need to be replaced with new one (inspection result is attached). This
damaged condition is may be caused of the aging of the tank (relative old) so the PVC is easily
break due to pressure/impact of the operating condition (regularly circulating cycles).
D-750 (nearly have similar operating condition with T-740) already changed in 2013/2014
from UPVC-FRP material (same as D-740 material) become butyl rubber lined steel and still
operate until now.

CHANGE (IMPROVEMENT)
The changing of existing material used as D-740 hypo tank is need to be considered as well as
other aspects. There is the recommendation for the new tank to be built:

1. Material: 100%-chlorobutyl-rubber lined steel. It is more strong than PVC and have
excellent resistance for caustic soda & good resistance for hypo. It said that the heat
resistance is up to 93°C for most acids and caustics. Before regarding the project to the
vendor/manufacturer, make sure to do the immerse test and other test to sample product
to confirm that the material can resist the actual condition of tank.

2. Install flexible connection after the tank nozzles on relative big piping (inlet or outlet
tank) for allowing expansion and compression effect that can give stress to the tank.

3. Regularly inspect the lining every 2 year to prevent the failure on lining will give big
impact on steel (contamination on product, oxygen formation, and next level structural
damage)
