ECE 522 Due: Lesson 5 (2 September 2015)

Induction Machines
Homework #2

1. (20 points) A three-phase, 60-Hertz motor runs at 715 RPM at no load and at 670 RPM at full
load.
a. What would you expect to be the synchronous speed of this motor?
b. How many poles does this motor have?
c. What is the slip at full load?
d. What is the frequency of the rotor currents at full load?

2. (30 points) A four-pole, three phase, high-efficiency induction motor operates at 460V line-to-
line, 60Hz, with a slip of 1.2%. Its equivalent circuit parameters are as follows:
R1=0.058 Ohms R2=0.402 Ohms XM=18.0 Ohms
X1=0.320 Ohms X2=0.386 Ohms Neglect mechanical, core, and stray losses

a. Find the input current and power factor.

b. Find the air gap voltage and air gap power.
c. Find the output torque.
d. Find the energy efficiency.
e. Find the starting torque and starting current for this machine if it is line started.

3. (12 points) For the induction machine in problem 2,

a. What would you expect as the no-load test results for voltage, current, and power?
b. What would you expect as the blocked rotor voltage at 25 Hertz?

4. (20 points) A four-pole, split phase induction machine operates at 120V, 60Hz, and a slip of 5%.
At 5% slip, the sum of mechanical, core, and stray losses is 51 Watts. Its circuit parameters are as
follows:

R1=2.00 Ohms R2=2.80 Ohms XM=60.5 Ohms

X1=2.80 Ohms X2=2.56 Ohms

a. Determine its output torque.

b. Under starting conditions, its two winding impedances at 60Hz are as follows:

Main winding: Rm=2.00 Ohms; Xm=2.80 Ohms

Auxiliary winding: Ra=7.70 Ohms; Xa=1.95 Ohms

Determine the capacitance that would best enhance its starting torque.

5. (18 points) Questions.

a. Why are induction motors with deep-bar rotors not recommended for use with pulse-width
modulated variable speed drives?
b. We now consider two induction motors rated at the same voltage and the same input power.
One is designed for 50Hz. The other is designed for 60Hz. Which machine is larger and
why?
c. Give a brief qualitative description of ramp rate as it applies to an induction machine with a
variable speed drive. What is the relationship between ramp rate and input current when
starting an induction motor with a variable speed drive? A qualitative answer is fine here.
