Unit/Topic: Lifespan/Relationships, Sexual Orientation, & Identity

Duration: 2-3 Days

Materials: PowerPoint, handouts, The science of Heartbreak video, In a Heartbeat video, NFL Kiss Cam
Love has No Labels video, LGBTQ Understanding Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities video.

Standards:

 NYS FACS 2 – Students will acquire the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a
safe and healthy environment.
 A.3.1 – Explore ways to define personal identity during adolescence.
 A.3.2. – Examine the effects of gender, ethnicity, and culture on personal identity

Objective:

 To have students describe the characteristics and criteria’s of a relationship.


 To have students relate to NFL Kiss Cam Love has no label video.
 To have students interpret In a Heartbeat video and relate it to every teen relationship.
 To have students argue the validity of In a Heartbeat to current society and justify exposing this
media to young children.
 To have students compare and contrast sexual orientation and gender identity.
 To have students explain the difficulty of struggling with sexual orientation and gender identity.

Do Now:

Day 1
 Describe a personal relationship?
Day 2
 What is the difference between gender and sex?
Day 3
 What is sexual orientation and identity?

Procedures:

Day 1
 Teacher will review the do now.
 Teacher will discuss what is a personal relationship?
 Teacher will discuss what a personal relationship requires?
 Teacher will show NFL Kiss Cam Love has No Label video.
 Teacher will show In a Heartbeat video.
 Teacher will discuss the video and extrapolate reactions from students.
Day 2
 Teacher will review the do now.
 Teacher will discuss the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation.
 Teacher will discuss the psychological aspect for gender identity.
 Teacher will discuss the various types of sexual orientation.
Day 3
 Teacher will review the do now.
 Teacher will continue to discuss the various types of sexual orientation.
 Teacher will show LGBTQ Understanding Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities video

Independent Practice:

Day 1
 Students will describe characteristics of personal relationship.
 Students will discuss the requirements of a relationship.
 Students will watch and react to NFL Kiss Cam Love has No Label video.
 Students will watch and react to In a Heartbeat video.
Day 2
 Students will discuss the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation.
 Students will record information about gender identity and the various sexual orientations.
Day 3
 Students will record information about the various sexual orientations.
 Students will watch and react to LGBTQ Understanding Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities
video.

Closure:

Day 1
 Watch and react to “Elder reacts to In a Heartbeat” and “In a Heartbeat Animators reacts to
Elder react to In a Heartbeat”
Day 2
 Review the various types sexual orientations
Day 3
 Watch and react to LGBTQ Understanding Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities video

Assessment: Students will be assessed through various questions throughout the lesson and through
their reactions to the various videos.
