Artificial/Natural Selection

By Kenneth Ibarra and Chris Gutierrez

Outline
● Natural Selection - Animals from similar species have different characteristics
that make them different from each other or to have certain abilities that they
have because of that.
● Artificial Selection - Humans bring two animals from different species to try to
make the offspring inherit certain traits from its parents.
● Diversity - The different kinds of animals around the world and what
biodiversity means.
● Overproduction - Animals reproduce themselves more than they need to and
eventually this becomes something bad for them.
● Adaptation - How animals change to different climate or places where they
have to develop certain stuff to be able to survive.
What is Natural Selection?
Definition: Natural Selection is the process in when animal get better adapted to the
environment and then have a better chance of surviving and reproducing.

Example: An example would be African and Asian Elephants having different sized
ears. This is because Africa has a hotter temperature and the elephants have bigger
ears there. The ears help them cool down and since Africa has a hotter temperature,
African Elephants have bigger ears.
3 facts about Natural Selection:
-It sometimes helps an animal be more likely
to survive to some stuff that animals from a
similar specie wouldn´t.
-This process isn´t made by humans.
-Animals have no control over this.

What is Artificial Selection?
Definition: Artificial selection is when only the animals with the desired traits and
characteristics are bred.

Example: An example would be how only fast dogs are bred so that they become
faster.

3 facts about artificial selection:

-Humans bring two dogs from
different races to make a new type
of dog to have certain traits
-Artificial selection is something can
humans make.
-Most times combinations humans
Greyhound French Bulldog try to make aren't successful.
What is Diversity?
Definition: Diversity in Natural Selection is when there is a diverse amount of
species.

Example: Birds are diverse because there are lots of them and lots of bird
species.
3 facts about diversity:
-The term diversity doesn´t just apply for animals.
-Diversity can be measured in three ways: Species, Ecosystem and
Genetic diversity
-The term Biodiversity means ¨diverse life¨, so it's like the diversity for
nature, while diversity is for everything, not just for one certain thing.
What is Overproduction?
Definition: Overproduction is when species produce more than they can support.

Example: Cod reproduces more than it has to, they run out of food and most of
them die, then the rest are eaten by people and cods go extinct.

3 facts about overproduction:

-Animals eventually run out of food when
this happens.
-This is one of the most common reasons for
a specie to go extinct.
-Overproduction can happen to all animal
species.
What is an Adaptation?
Definition: An adaptation is a trait that helps an organism get a bigger chance to
reproduce and survive.

Example: An example of an adaptation would be an animal blending in with the

environment that it is in.

3 Facts About adaptation:

● An adaptation is the most
vital part of an organism.
● Natural selection can cause
a adaptation.
● Simple organisms also have
adaptations.

Conclusion:
We decided to talk about this because this is a complex topic and we both found it
interesting so we decided to talk about it.

We like animals and we wanted to do more research about all of these things
related to them.

We wanted to review everything about this because it's an interesting topic.
