Unemployment

Unemployment means the lack of employment. In other words, its mean man’s inability to find
work or any job according to his qualification. In today’s world, unemployment found
everywhere on the globe. It is no longer temporary and manageable. It has rather become an
international problem being faced by even the rich advanced countries of the world. The virus of
unemployment is getting more panic. Most social issue have been raising a head but
unemployment is one of the major economic problem. The person who is searching for a job
according to his/her qualification and requirement but does not able to find it then he/she will
come in category of unemployment person. Now a days, in Pakistan unemployment is believed
as biggest curse for youth, who are well educated and high degree holder but still couldn’t get
success to find in finding a suitable job for themselves. Pakistan is under develop country and
trying to overcome various social issue existed here since many years. Unemployment is one of
them and still becoming the reason for non-development of nation. Lack of interest of people
towards agriculture and industrial sectors leads the situation of unemployment. People who are
suffering from unemployment have to face various problems like physical and mental
harassment and depression, social abuse forced to choose or accept the wrong way of getting
money in the form of crime and violence or sometimes the result come in the form of suicide
commitments by people due to being unemployed. Unemployment becomes the reason of
downfall of country in term of its economic situation and also encourage the criminal affairs.
People are forced to take wrong decision for the survival of family.
“It’s a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it’s a depression when you lose
yours“.
There are many reasons of unemployment, increasing population is a big reason for
unemployment. Due to increased population people could not able to get a job as various
applicants apply for a same job. Population brings the competition in all professional sectors.
The increased population which leads to higher unemployment rates. As the number of people
who are looking for job is increasing, it is most difficult to arrange jobs for all these huge
number of workers. In this situation the demand for workers will be more than the available
occupation. There is a globe rapid technological change which plays a big role in the increased
unemployment problem. Many jobs which were handled by hands are being done by different
machines and technology nowadays. The new advance technology replaced the low skilled or
unskilled workers in different factories. This made production faster and more accurate, but it
result in more unemployed people. For example; when personal computer replaced typewriters,
typewriter become unemployed and had to find other industries to be employed in. The new
technology advances have eliminated the less complicated tasks while at same time require
worker to have higher levels of skills. However, it is doubtful whether technological change is
leading to a net destruction of employment, if both direct and indirect impact are accounted for.
The third cause of unemployment is lack of education or skill for employment. This happens
when the qualification of a person are not sufficient to meet his job responsibilities. If the
education was not directed toward the labor market then the mismatch occur thus leading to
structural unemployment. These individuals face difficulties in learning .new skill applicable for
the required job e.g. computer skill, management and communication. As the need for skilled
and educated workers increase for employers, the employment opportunities for those without a
college education decrease leading to higher unemployment rate. Unemployment can be due to
rising cost. The rising cost makes it hard for the companies to pay the usual optimum salary for
the employees or even the minimum wage in some cases. Hence, the employees reject the low
wage job and leave the companies. For example if the price of petrol or electricity has increased
this definitely will affect the industries or factories which depend on these energy sources.
Moreover, sometimes companies need to cut down the budget due to an economic crisis,
industrial decline, company bankruptcy, or organization restructuring so the number of
employees is reduced or some position are cancelled which increase the unemployment rates.
The other major effects of unemployment is the financial problems which are rising from
prolong unemployment. It is known that we cannot buy anything without money; the constant
income buys food, clothing and shelter. Due to the loss of income, unemployed individuals will
be unable to earn money to meet financial obligations. For example, people who fails to pay
payments or to pay rent will loss their housing properties and become homeless. Unemployment
also prevent one from doing many things and involving in different activities e.g. travelling. This
affects the national economy leads to poverty. As a result of the financial crisis and the reduced
overall purchasing capacity of a country the unemployed individuals are unable to maintain the
minimum standard of living. There are many obvious and well-documented social problems
which are caused by unemployment. Because of the increased spare time and stress there will be
an increase in the rates of drug abuse and domestic violence. Moreover and discrimination in
society, suicide rates and crime rates especially the young.
“When more and more people are thrown out of work, unemployment results.”
Population should be controlled in manner to provide more job opportunities for limited people.
Education system and quality of education in country professional institutes should be improved
in order provide technical and practical knowledge so that they can face the all situation in their
professional career very efficiently. Government should focus on improvement of each and every
sector individually especially agriculture so that people could not be forced to move from rural to
urban areas for getting better job opportunities. Development of rural areas is required to prevent
the migration of people from those places so that they can get the opportunity of job without
moving from there.
