The purpose of Student-Centered Learning (SCL) is to provide students the way and strategies in molding

their understanding on the lesson by experiencing it (Bob, 2014). It improves educational systems to
improve the skills of 21st century students in critical thinking and collaboration (Cook-Harvey, 2014).
This chapter deals with the research design, data sets and the procedures for data collection and
analysis. It outlines the individual interviews with the Accounting students and the researchers aim to
find out the effects of Student-Centered Learning (SCL) to their education.

Research Design

QUALITATIVE APPROACH

Qualitative approach gives emphasis on the description and interpretation for the development of new
ideas in a structured design. It is also responsible for the complex ideas to be connected to the real-
world environment with the intervention of various perspective (Hancock et al., 2009). Qualitative
research also provides understanding on the perspective of the respondents it involves. It aims to gather
specific information on the behavioral, social, ethical contexts of the population involved. The methods
used in qualitative research are vital because of its purposes in applied research wherein those specific
methods hold important insights in order to conduct the study (Yin, 2011).

Case studies are intended to show particular aspects coming from the standpoint of the participants
with the use of different approaches. The case study approach delivers in-depth aspects from complex
ideas in the real world (Avery
et al, 2011). A case study is used because this study
incorporates non-numerical data. The researchers examined the relationship between
Accounting students and the implementation of Student-Centered Learning (SCL).

The researchers interviewed another respondent, Rosemarie Dado a second year college student taking
up the course of BS Accounting Technology in University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos. She is a very
kind person with a strong fighting spirit, becuase she really believes that education is the key to succes
that's why she is sharing with us her experiences that could help us to be more competative in the field
of business. She is smart and good at her course, even though her subject is not that easy she can still
manage to pass every sem and continue slayin' to her course. Another respondent that the
researchers interviewed is Kerr Sumagaysay a second year college in University of Negros Occidental-
Recoletos taking up the course of BS Accountancy. He is an artistic person, good at sketching, painting,
drawing and many more, but beside of that he is also good at his course. He is a humble person with
such talents in art but also good in balancing debits and credits. For him taking accountancy course is no
joke, but still with perseverance and risks he still continue and make good at his studies. Eventhough
sometimes he might see the lessons are getting hard atleast he is trying his best to conquer all the
struggles that he may encounter at his course. The researchers interviewed one respondent,
Anthonette Marie Asada a second year college student of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.
She is taking up the course of BS Accountancy and she is competative enough and taking risks just to
pass the qualification exam for accountancy every sem. For her taking up the course of accountancy is
not that easy, because it takes patience and dedication to persue this course. One should have a mind
not only good in math but most especially good in analyzing because one wrong move could affect your
computations. Justine Ayuco, a respondent that was interviewed by the researchers she was a second
year college student at University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos taking up the course of BS Acconting
Technology. She is a smart person with a great personality. She is happy with her course even though it
is not that easy to deal with , she is also good in answering such questions like she was interviewed, she
really express her own points on what she is experiencing at her studies or in the classroom. She is very
competative student and also hardworking to her studies. Beah Mallari, also a respondent that the
researchers interviewed a second year college student in University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos
taking up the course of BS Accounting Technology. She is active at the school activities but also active to
her studies. Eventhough she is tired at times but still, she manage her time and coped with the things
needed for her studies. Her course was not that easy, analyzing problems and balancing numbers are
way to complicated and tough sometimes but with perseverance to learn she can still overcome those
struggles. The Researchers interviewed a respondent, Almira Grace Sumcio a second year student
taking up the course of BS Business Management in University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos. She is a
competative and active student in her school, joining school activities especially at her course
department. She is enjoying her course and believes that she will get through all of this struggles and
gain success at the end when she gaduates. She is very faithful in God because she is also a member of
their church and she believes that with God nothing is impossible.

Learning technique. These questions include:

Do all of your subjects apply SCL? How?

How does the SCL help in retaining the learnings of Accountancy Students like you?

What are your techniques to learn on your own way when it comes to your major/minor subjects?

What are the activities in your classroom given by your professors that give you opportunities to learn
on your own?

What are your resources to have a lifelong learnings?

Do you think discovering learnings on your own way is effective? Why?

Do you think reporting of lessons help you in retaining your learnings? Why?

Do you find any difficulties in catching up lessons if your classmate is the one reporting the lessons?

What is the effect to you of the application of collaborative learning?

Is it better if the leadership style of teacher changes from "Do what I say" to "Let's make a plan" Why?

Then, decided to gather 6 respondents to be interviewed for the case study. Qualifications of the
respondents are appointed. The respondent should be a college student who is currently taking up BS
Accountancy. He/she should be enrolled in the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos. After
appointing the respondents and their qualifications, the researchers contacted the respondents. On
February 8, 2017, the respondents are informed and educated about student-centered learning by one
of the researchers through Facebook. They are asked if they would be willing to answer questions
related to the topic. Positive responses are received from the respondents and the ten question are
then delivered to them. The researchers gave the respondents time to answer the ten question provided
to them. On February 10, 2017, Antonnette Marie Asada had submit her answer at 8:34 pm. To be
followed by the submission of Kerr Sumagaysay at 10:31 pm. The submission of the respondents
continues. Rosemarie Dado who submitted her work in exactly 11:00 pm. While Justine Ayuco presented
her work at 11:31 pm. Beah Malari also complied the answers at 11:34 pm. On February 12, Almira
Sumcio had passed her work at 5:00 pm.

The researchers compile all the data gathered and placed it in one document file. Analysis and
classification are performed. Answer by the respondents in each number was classified into categories.
