What is Below is also Above

If You now will seek the Spiritus Universalis Magneticus, then note the following: It is found and
gotten in various Manners: firstly It floats in the Air, secondly in Dew, Rain, Snow and Hail. The
easiest Way of getting it is from Rainwater, into which the Spiritus Mundi frequently descends, in
order to maintain the Life of all Created things; in such is the Spirit concealed, that smithies and
nurtures, from which all Things have their Beginning and here the Spirit floats in the Water.

Let large Vessels be fashioned out of (tannenholz, X Mass tree wood, pine), in which 12 to 16
Eimer (Buckets) (ca. 1000 Liters) of Water can be held and also let solid Lids be made for them. In
these collect during Spring Rainwater and set the Vessels when the Sky is clear uncovered and
exposed to the Sun and Moon, because: Patrem es res habet solem, matrem lunam. Through this the
Water becomes especially “fruitful”, because all the Powers from above go into the Water, that
finally becomes completely Magnetic, until you see, that Venus shows herself and swims in the
“Ocean”, that is, becomes Green. Therefore you must replace what the sun draws to it, with other
Rainwater, and when it is murky weather and it Rains, You must cover them over. Also these
Vessels must stand in a Place, where no one can get to them. When it after 4 to 8 Weeks has gone
through Putrefaction, and has aquired a muccosic (slimy) Being, then cover the Vessels, because in
these You have concealed the Spirit and Beginning of all perfected things in the World.

So take 2 large Flasks, set them in Waterbath, add Helmet and Receiver, all well luted, and distil
over a Part. Store well closed in stoneware Vessels. Then distil another Part, also store this. The
third Part (a third of the liquid) leave in the Flask. When all has cooled down, then again pour fresh
Rainwater to the Liqour, mount the Helm, lute a receiver, and distil again distil a Part of the
Volatile over and store it, then also the Phlegmatic Part. Again pour fresh Water on and continue in
this Manner, until all Water is used and You have distilled it all of, leaving about 12 Measures of of
Liqour, which will appear brown red. Remark: All Slime and Earth that has generated in the Vessels
during Putrefaction You must use in Your distillations, then You will have not only a virginal
Earth, but also a red Sulphur, the True Fish of Hermes without Bones, that swims in this salty fiery
Ocean. Store the remaining Liqour well, Then take Your Spiritus and rectify it; the Phlegma that
remains is good for nothing. So when You have reduced Your Spiritus to about 2 to 3 Measures,
then store it well, because it is very volatile and penetrating. Then take the brown red Liqour, pour
into a Retort, set it in Ashbath, lute a receiver on and distil over, and when only 4 Measures are left,
set another receiver and distil all over leaving a thick Liqour. Now let it cool and pour half of the
distillate back on, then they will reunite. Let rest for a day and night; then begin to distil again. This
Time distil to a somewhat thicker Liqour than the first Time. Pour the distillate back again, let it rest
for 2 days and nights, then it will solve again. When You now see that the “Earth” separates, then
pour of all clear solution into another Retort. Stopper the retort with the earth and store well. Then
set the Retort with the Liqour in Sandbath or even better in Ashes, lute on a receiver and distil 4
Measures of. Store the distillate, the remaining red Liqour pour into a Glass, cover it tight, set in a
cool place, and see if Crystals will form. When Crystals of many Colours have formed, pour of the
Liqour from the Crystals into a Retort, add a Measure of the above reserved Liqour to it and digest
them together for 2 days and nights; then distil of as much as You added of the Spiritus, and store
this distillate well. Then again set in a cool Place, so Crystals will form. When You now see no
more Crystals are forming, then pour the Liqour from the Crystals of into a Retort- but the Crystals
take out with a wooden Tong and store them well away from dust- pour again a measure of Spiritus

to the Liqour and draw of a bit more than a Measure in Ashes, the distillate add to the previous. Set
the Vessel in a cold Place and let again Crystals form, take them out and again add to the remaining
Liqour the remaining Spiritus, draw of in Ashes a bit more than a Measure, set the Liqour in the
cellar and let again Crystals form, add the distillate to the previous. As now the Crystals have
formed, take them out and store them well and pour of the Liqour. Again distil of a Part from the
Liqour and let Crystals form; this repeat so often, until all Crystals have formed, then you have
Vitriolum Macrocosmi. Now should a Redness form and linger over, so pour all Your spiritual
Spirit, that you distilled from Your Liqour, back and flush Your Vessels with it. Then pour this on
the remaining saved Earth and all this to the Liqour, from which no more Crystals form, and distill
al of in a Retort. But at the end give a strong Fire, that the bottom of the Retort begins to glow, even
it should be destroyed. Take the Retort out of the Fire, break it and collect all brown red Earth,
grind it fine and put in a Flask, pour the drawn of Spirit upon it again and extract everything, then a
white Earth will precipitate on the bottom. Pour of the red Extract into a clean Glass. But put the
remaining earth into a small Flask set it in Sand and distil of all remaining Moistness, until dry; then
store it well, then you have prepared the Sigillum Hermetis correctly. The red Liqour distil until a
red thick Juice, store the drawn of Spirit. Now take all Your above Crystals, grind them fine and
small and place them in a Flask. Pour over the thick, red, fiery Liqour, add also 1 Measure of the
lastly drawn of Water. Set the Flask in a gentle Heat, then everything will resolve. Then take the
Glass and set it in a cool Place, then Crystals will form again, but of a completely different Shape.
When now all Crystals have formed, then pour the Liqour of and take out the Crystals. Draw of half
of the Liqour, set the remnant back in the cool Place to form Crystals, and do this so often, until all
Crystals have formed. Then solve them again, and if You have no more impregnated Water, so take
of that that You were commanded to save after the first distillation, solve the Crystals and let them
form again, and repeat this, until they flow like Wax in the Fire; then You have prepared the Sal
Sapientiae, and have the most Powerful of all Things, as Hermes says. And You have here Lapis
Medicinalem, as a spiritual Rock, prepared from the Macrocosmos. Also applicable is what Hermes
says, that what is above is like that which is below, and Wonders can be performed with such,
Take half of these Crystals and grind 2 Loth together with 1 Quintl pure, beaten Gold, put into a
Phiol, seal it and let them go through the Colours together in our Athanor. With the remaing
Crystals You can augment Your Universal Stone, then You will have Lapdem Medicinalem Fixum.

Or do as this: Take Your Crystals of the first Order (the above Sal Sapentiae) grind fine and mix 4
Loth of these with 2 Loth of purified Quicksilver, put together into a Flask, mount a Helm and give
Sublimative Fire. What sublimes, mix with the remains and sublimate again. Repeat this until all,
except a small amount of Faeces, has ascended. Then take out the Sublimate and sublimate it
separately a few times. Now You have again 2 ways You can go: Either dry with the Gold or wet,
after having let the Sublimate flow into a Liqour in the cellar. Go to Work in such a manner, as was
taught with the Urine previously, because it is all one Work, then You will again have the Lapis
Medicinalem.

But You can also do like this: Take Your Sublimate and grind it fine, then grind Your red fiery
“Sulphur” into it, and sublimate them together, then the Sublimate will ascend with the Sulphur and
You will have the Fire of Nature. This You can let go through the Colours or distil them together
cohobando, after the Sublimate has been set in a cellar to flow into an “Oil”, then You will have a
fiery Liqour.

Or You can right from the start transform Your Crystals into a Liqour in a Steambath and distil per
cohobando. Then pour this Liqour on the red Sulphur and extract this, the clear Solution carefully

poured of, then take the white Earth and put into a Phiol. If this Earth weighs 1 Quintl, 4 Quintl of
the Liqour is poured unto it; then the Phiol is sealed and set in our Gradualoven. Now give for 4
Weeks the first Degree of Fire, then it will begin to turn black, and if this is not the case, You have
not Worked correctly. When the 4 Weeks are over, then let it stand for another 4 weeks in the first
Degree, then you will have the proper Velvet-Blackness, and will thus behold the Philosophical
Darkness. When these 4 Weeks are over, You must open a Register, but only so it stands a little bit
warmer. Therefore You must Know how strong the first Degree of Fire is, namely that of a
(“nesting”?) Hen. For if you gave the Heat too strong, the “Yellow” would appear before the
“White” and finally turn red, so that the growing “White” would be burnt. But You must here note,
that after the Blackness the Glass must be put in the Ashes, but only as deep, as the Matter stands
high in the Glass. The Heat of the second Degree must be, as the Sun in Summer when it is at its
hottest. After about 4 Weeks the “Peacocks Tail” will appear. When now many Colours have
appeared, then strengthen the Fire another Degree, so that the Glass does not begin to glow and let it
again stand for 4 Weeks, then all the Colours will pass and the Matter turn sparkling white. When it
has become white through and through, then set your Glass deeper in the Ashes and give a
strong(er?) Fire for 4 Weeks, then it will turn peachy red. Let it stand for another 4 Weeks and give
the last Degree, then it will become blood red, and the King will appear, and the Substance will
flow together in the Centre of the Glass like a Ruby, then you have Lapis Medicinalis. This is the
figure:

The Redness is concentrated in the Centre of the Liquid Substance of the Phiol.

This You can then augment in the following manner. Take out Your red King, grind him fine, put
him into the Phiol again and pour so much of Your Liqour over, that it becomes like a Mush and let
it go through the Colours again. But now it does not take so long Time, the Degrees of Fire You
must adjust to the Colours. Now I advise You, that You not overdrench the Matter during the
imbibition, and do not make haste with the Fire. Repeat this Labour, until Your Liqour is used up,
then You have fixed the Blessed Stone of the Wise Masters.

N. B. : But it is better, if you take of Your Liqour 4 Quintl And solve in such 1 Quintl of pure
beaten Gold. Then pour this Solution on the Earth and let them go together through the Colours, this
is safer. Then imbibed and augmented with the fiery Liqour.

If You want to proceed even shorter, then take Your above half fixed Crystals (the Sal Sapientiae),
and split into tow equal Parts- but remark, the fiery red Sulphur You must have united with them
through the Solution, as taught- seal one part of the Crystals in a Phiol, after you have ground them
together with a pure beaten Gold, 1 Quintl of Gold to 4 Quintl of Salt, and let them go together
through the Colours. When it has become fixed, take out your Tincture, grind it fine and add 1
Quintl of fresh Crystals to it. Again put them in a Phiol and let them go through the Colours. When
again fixed, again grind 1 Quintl of Crystals into it and proceed further, as told, until all salt is used
up, then You also have here the Lapis Medicinalis.

If You want to use Your Lapis on Metals, then take such, no matter which one, grind it fine, put into
a Flask and pour a highly rectified Wine Spirit over it, extract it, pour all clear Solutions together in
a clean Glass and distil of the Wine Spirit leaving a red Powder. Put this in a clean Phiol and let it in
4 Weeks go through the Colours in our Gradual oven to a red Carbuncle; then remove the glass

from the Fire, thus You have prepared and in Your Hands the Blessed Stone of the Wise-Masters; It
shines like a Carbuncle.

Now we will turn to the Earth, from which likewise and with even (closer, simpler?) Manipulations
the Stone of the Wise can be prepared. For in the Earth the Father of all Things is concealed.

Out of the Earth Grows Foliage and Grass

So if You wish to proceed in a shorter time and get in greater Quantity the Spiritus Universalis
Mundi Balsamicus Magneticus , then do like this:

In the middle of May go onto a wine mountain, on a field or a meadow, make an at least two feet
deep pit, where there be a red or claylike (letten?). Take out of such a pit 20-24 Zentners (measure,
but how much?) and spread the soil on a suitable place, so that the Stars and Heaven can work on it.
Let this Earth lie in clear Weather for 14 days and nights. Should it become Rainweather, You must
cover it well with Straw or Green tree cuttings. It would be better, if You had the opportunity, of
taking the Earth home, and expose it to the Air on a clean spot. One could make a Structure above,
and in the case of Rain cover it off with Boards. After a forth night has passed, when the Earth is
well Weathered by Air and Sky, put it in Vessels and cover it.

Now take wooden Vessels, as the saltpetre cookers use, and cover them inside with a Structure and
Straw. There should also be Tap holes. Put a Quantity of Your Earth in it, and pour as much
Rainwater over it as is required. Let it sit for 48 hours, so it will extract the pure Earth Salt. Then
open a Tap and let it slowly run of into a wooden Vessel, just as when one makes a (“solvage”,
saturated liquid), this “solvage” keep well. Pour fresh Water on the Earth, let sit, and drain of.
Discard the Earth, put fresh Earth in the vessel and pour the “second Water” over, but augmented
with fresh Rainwater. Therefore One needs to have collected much Rainwater in clean containers in
advance, because it is often needed. Let it sit 48 hours, then Tap it of, keep this solvage and
continue in this manner, until you have treated all your earth in this manner. Then take a clean
copper kettle, pour in the solvage, and reduce to ¾, always adding fresh solvage and reducing it to
¾. When all has been reduced, pour into another copper kettle and put in the Ground in a cool
Place. Let stand for days, until, when reduced enough, a Salt forms, like Saltpetre, but does not burn
like the common Saltpetre. Pour of the solvage, reduce it further, let the Salt Crystals form and take
them out; and continue so with all your solvage until you have all the Crystals. Then dissolve,
filtrate, coagulate and Crystallize such Crystals with distilled Dew or Rainwater , until they are
beautifully transparent and crystalline, then you have the Sal Terrae Virgineae or the Nitrum
Philosophorum, that floats in the Sea of the World, the Water, that does not Wet the Hands, the
right Sal Sapientiae, without which nothing in the World can be made.

Now take of your Sal Naturae 1 pound, grind it fine in a Glass mortar, mix it with the same amount
of its own Earth, the one from which the Salt was drawn- but such Earth must first be strongly
calcined- moisten with distilled Rainwater and form into balls, put these in the sun and pour over or
moisten several times with distilled Rainwater, so that the Spiritus Aeris may penetrate more
deeply. After 4 weeks take the balls, fill a well (“beschlagene”, reinforced) Retort halfway with
them, put in a good Wind oven, lute a large strong and clean Recipient onto it and distil thus a
Spiritus Salis Volatilis over; what collects in the neck also add to the Receiver. Do so with all your
balls, then you will have plenty of Sal Volatilis and Spiritus. Take all Your distillate and put in a tall

Flask, mount a Helmet and distil of the Phlegma in a gentle Waterbath. Then, when no more
Phlegma goes over, put the Flask in a Sandbath and distil the Spiritus over, pour back and cohobate
some times. Store in a clean Flask. Now give a stronger Fire, so that the Sal Volatilis rises in the
Helm and sublimates. This you must sublimate several times separately, until no more Faeces show
and remain in the flask, Then also store this safely.

Now take the Caput Mortuum and extract from it with distilled Rainwater a Sal fixus, which you
must solve and coagulate until it is nice, pure and transparent. Grind these Crystals finely and put in
a tall Flask, add the Spiritus and the Sal Volatilis, set to digest, until it all has become a Water, thus
you have completed the Menstruum Universale. You can also, when it has become a Water, put in a
retort, distil per gradus and cohobate, until all has gone over, then it is finished.

Continue thusly: take of this Menstruo 4 loth and of a pure and thinly beaten gold 1 Quintl, add
both to a Flask, and set it to digest tightly stoppered, then the Gold solves as Ice n hot Water, but a
grey Earth sinks to the Bottom. Separate the clear Solution, that has a golden appearance from the
Earth, and pour into a Phiol, that should be strong and transparent. But take care that a third of the
Phiol is empty, melt it shut or seal it hermetically. Then in the name of God set it in our Athanor or
digestive oven, give it a gentle Steamheat for 40 days and nights, until all has putrified, so it will be
black, this Blackness being called our Philosophical Ravenshead. Then put the Flask in Ashes and
give it again Heat for 40 days and nights, this Time a Degree higher, as hot as the sun of Juli on the
tiles of a roof, then all Colours will appear as a Peacocks Tail. Raise the Heat a Degree for 40 days
and nights, but beware that your Glass does not become glowing, then your Tincture will become
white as snow, and the moon will begin to shine as a white Silver Piece. Set your Flask deeper in
the Ashes and give it stronger Fire, so that it glows for 25 days and nights, then your Tincture will
become reddish. Continue for another 25 days and nights with the Fire, it will then become blood
red and collect in the middle of the Glass as the Yolk in an Egg, transparent as a Ruby, and some
Faeces might have separated on the edges, then you have the right Quinta Essentia, yea the right
Semen Auri. Thus You have again prepared the Blessed Stone of the Wise, with which to do
Wonders, both in Medicine, as also with the Mercurius Vivus and other metals.

So You should also know, that here You have, as taught above, the right Menstruum Universale, it
is sweet and not corrosive. And these are the principal Liqours, from the Earth as well as the Rain,
to arrive at the Philosophical King.

So You can also extract the Tincture from the Weissgiltigerz (white giltig ore) and Rotgiltigerz with
the above Menstruo, pour the Extractions in a Flask, and distil the Menstruo of again, leaving a
Substance like a thick and viscious Oil, that coagulates in the Cold as boiled Sugar. Put this matter
in a (reinforced) Retort, set this in a Sandbath and mount a clean Glass, that You may collect what
goes over. When yellow drps begin to go over and white Spiritus appears, then the Oil also goes
over. You must mount a large Receiver and lute well and manage the Fire carefully, so that the
Spiritus does not break the Receiver. When now all Spiritus and Oil have passed over, a black Mass
remains. At the End one should not give too strong a Fire, so that the Matter does not flow. Pour the
Spiritus and Oil in a Phiol and hang them in a Steambath, then the Liqour will become clear and of
the Oil a Part will float above and a Part below; these Parts separate with a Funnel, for it is the
Blood, and store everything well.

Now take the black Remains, and calcine them, but take care, that they do not flow, but become
white and turn to Ashes. Then take of this Ash a Part and pour three Times its Weight of its own

Spiritus over it and digest them together in a Retort for 8 days and nights, then it will turn red as
blood. Then set the Retort in a Sandbath drive it gently over, but at the End give a somewhat
stronger Fire, then the Oil rises and goes over with the grey Earth, which is called the Man or
Sulphur, united with his white Wife, and has become a high Medicine, that is now called Aurum
Potabile, that maintains the Health of Humans. It heals the (kropf?), Fistulas, the Stroke and other
diseases with a single Drop.

So continue in this manner: Pour all of this Oil together, that is heavy as Lead, add 2 Loths of the
very subtlest calcinated Gold Calx and set it all well sealed on hot Ashes of the first Degree. Then
you will see the Gold rise up and fall down and the gold will open up and the Oil become a murky
black Mass. Finally all the Colours will appear, and You must manage the Degrees of Fire
accordingly. The whole Work, if You are diligent, can be performed in 30 Weeks. Finally it flow
together into a red fixed Stone. Separate this from the Glass, take 1 Part of it and 4 Parts of a
purified Quicksilver, put them together in a Phiol- but first You must grind the Medicine fine- seal
the Phiol well, set it in the Sand and give the Fire Degrees for 4 Weeks, then the Tincture will begin
to flow and take in the Mercurius and change it into a red Powder, then You here have a Tincture,
that You first must ferment with Gold and then can use on the imperfect Metals. But that you also
can see, that a Tincture can also be prepared from the Vegetable Kingdom, especially from the
Winestock, then listen further:

Inexhaustable
Is the Power of the Allmighty, and had he not created the Winestock, then much would have been
left lacking in Art, for a great Mystery is concealed in Wine. The Wine makes the Grieving forget
their Sorrows and rejoices their Hearts, the Wine works on the Spirit through its Golden Sulphur,
which it carries with it. Therefore a Great Mystery can be Prepared from Wine.

So note the following: Take of an old good Wine, that is strong and has much Spirit and has reached
its maturity, clear and pure, take of such a Wine 24-30 Measures (Mass). Put such in large Flasks,
keep them well, set the Flasks to Putrefy for a month in a mild Heat. When the Time is up, put them
in Water bath and give them a Helm on, set a Receiver, lute well, and start with distilling over a
Third. Then take out the Flasks and set them in a warm place for 14 days and nights. In the
meantime rectify the Distilled Spirit 7 times, until volatile and freed of all Phlegma, that it
(disperses?) in the Air or is completely combustible, then it is rightly made. Store such in a cool
Place in a large clean Glass.

Then take thy Flasks and set again in Water bath, set a receiver, and distil, so comes a volatile
Acetum, take from each only a quart, so three quarts remain in the Flasks. Store the Distillate well.
Set up another receiver and resume Distilling; when two thirds have gone over, and only about 1
Measure remains, then take of the receiver and store the Phlegma. Pour all remains together in a
Flask and Distil until a Juice like Honey is left. Pour this in a Retort, place in a Sandbath, and Distil
what will go over, leaving a brown Salt. What has gone over, add to the volatile Acetum and Distil
together on Ashes, until all Phlegma is separated, First comes a volatile Azoth, then Phlegma and
finally the oily Acetum. When separated from all Phlegma then also store it well. Take out the
Caput Mortuum from the Retort and calcinate it only a little bit, then put in a Flask and pour so
much Phlegma over, that all the Salt can be extracted. Put the extract in a Flask and draw of the

Phlegma leaving a white Salt. This Salt dissolve again, to get rid of all Faeces and coagulate or
draw of the Phlegma leaving the Salt. Then take this Salt and dissolve in a large Flask with just a
little Phlegma, so it is hardly dissolved, pour all the Acetum over, also the rectified Spirit, stopper
the Flask and set it at a gentle Heat, that it might reunite. Then set the Flask in a cool Place in wet
sand, let it sit there, then Crystals will form. Take these out and store well. Reduce the remaining
liquid in Waterbath, so that new Crystals can form. Add these to the previous and continue thus
until all Crystals have formed. Then grind them finely and dissolve in a small amount of Phlegma-
only enough that they are barely dissolved- let sit for 4 days and nights at a gentle Heat and then
pour this clear Solution into a clean Flask. Set this well (closed?) in cool sand, then new Crystals
will form, that are much more beautiful, than the first ones. Take these out, reduce the remains in
Waterbath and put back in the cellar, then more Crystals will form. When all Crystals have formed,
take them, dissolve in your spiritual Phlegma and let Crystals form again, they will now be
completely pure, like a Diamond. So here you have again a completed a Work and you have the
Lapis Medicinalis of the first order.

With this Viriolum Vegetabile you can Work in this manner: take these Crystals, grind them finely,
put in a Phiol, seal this and hang it over a steambath for so long, that they have resolved into a
Liqour. Then dissolve in such Liqour a pure Gold, finely beaten, to 3 Lots of Liqour one Quintl
Gold. Put the Solution in a Phiol, seal it close, and set in our Gradual oven. Let it go through the
Colours, until it flows together and fixes in a red Carbunkle, thus you have the Lapis Medicinalis of
the second Order. With the Liqour You can, if You want, Augment Your Tincture, by grinding such
finely, put it in a Phiol and add enough of your Liqour that it becomes like a Mush. Then let it go
through the Colours in the Gradual oven. You can repeat this as often as You want, thus Your
Mystery gains in penetrating Power.

You can also pour Your Liqour on Quicksilver, then the Liqour will open up the Quicksilver, and
some Faeces will sink to the Bottom. With this Liqour and the Gold, You can, as preciously said, go
to Work, then You will have the Lapis Medicinalis of the third Order.

But if You find the Time of resolving your Crystals into a Liqour takes too long, then do thusly:
take your Crystals, grind them finely and take of a (“solvated”, “washed”) and (“burned out”,
calcined?) dry clay or (letten?), mix with the Salt, moisten with the spiritual Phlegma, that I
commanded You to keep, and make balls there of, when well dry, fill a (beschlagene, “reinforced”
?) Retort, set in a Sandbath and lute on a large Receiver. When all dry, then give Fire per gradus 48
hours- gently in the first and second Degree, but at the end a Flaming Fire- then You will have a
penetrating Spirit. Then take the receiver while still warn, seal well, and store in a cool Place. Then
take the Caput Mortuum, grind it fine and pour the Phlegma, which You saved, over and extract all
Salt from it, filter and evaporate until nice and pure. When dry, put in a Phiol, pour the distilled
fiery Liqour over, seal the Phiol, and set in Steambath for 14 days and nights, then the Salt will
resolve. You have now again a Universal Liqour, to use as the previous, and this is the very shortest
Modus.

If you now take of Your Lapis Medicinalis Vegetabilis and of the Lapis Medicinalis Microcosmi
from Blood, and of the Lapis Medicinalis Macrocosmi of each a Quintl of the first Order, grind
such together and resolve them into a Liquor in Steambath, dissolve Gold in such, pour the clear
Solution in a Phiol, seal such and let it go through the Colours, then you have found Mysterium
Magnum, the right Regenerating Quint Essence for the human body, of which we will write in more
detail later on.

But if You wish not to use Your Lapis of the first Order, then take Lapis of the second Order, of
each a Quintl, grind together and put in a Phiol, pour a highly rectified Spirit of Wine over. Then
pour all clear extracts together in a Flask, set up a Helm, and distil at gentle Heat all off leaving a
red Powder. Finally give a strong Fire, so it all flows together. This is even stronger than the above.
You have here a Treasure, that can Renew you through and through, because it penetrates Bone and
Marrow and strengthens also your Spirit, that it becomes mighty, enabling you to gaze into the
Innermost of Creation and Work Wonders in Magia, as well as in other things.

Third Book:

How to Prepare the highly Praised Stone of the Ancients (Sages) from
Mercurio Vulgo and Gold. Make it Wholesome.
That is, make out of this creeping and poisonous Worm a wholesome Medicine. This is done in
various Manners, of which you already have heard. But now I will show you how such Mercurius
Vivus is to be made spiritual and solaric through a simple Manipulation in the following manner:

This is now a Water, that does not wet the Hands; alone, all by itself, it will not become a Tincture,
and therefore you must do so with it: Go in a Mountain mine, where you can find a “Rotgiltigerz”
(Red gilded ore, a type of silver ore). Take of such 4 pounds and powder fine. Grind the 4 pounds
together with 3 pounds of Quicksilver thoroughly in a Bowl. Then put them in a Sublimatorium,
place a Helm and receiver, give a Sublimatory fire, then the Quicksilver will sublimate up together
with the volatile Sulphur of the Rotgiltigerz. What has Sublimated grind into the remnants and
sublimate up again. Continue this for so long, that no more living Mercury is to be seen, but all
Mercury ascends as a Sublimate, give a strong Sublimative fire at the end. Take your Sublimate and
sublimate it separately some times, until it has become transparent, and then try if you can make it
living with the fixed Oil of Winestone*. If something comes alive, then you must work thusly: take
your Caput Mortuum, as left over from the rotgiltigerz, calcine for so long, that it becomes a grey
ash, then extract with Vinegar the Salt from it, clarify with Aqua Destillata, until its all transparent
and pure. This Salt grind into your Sublimate and sublimate this so often that all Salt sublimes.
Then try if there is anything alive yet. If not, this is a Sign, that the Quicksilver has been brought
out of its Form. Should this not be the case, then you must continue Sublimating until this Sign
comes. Then take it, grind it fine, put it in a Solventbowl, set it in a moist spot in the Cellar, and it
will solve into a Liqour. Pour this liquor of from the Faeces; set the Faeces back and let them
liquefy. When all has Liquefied, pour together in a Retort, put it in Sand, set a Receiver and firstly
distill, that all watery has gone and yellow drops come, slowly, then take of the receiver, mount
another one and increase your Fire, then a yellow and red Oil will pass over; then you must give a
strong Fire. When no more comes over, let the fire extinguish, take the Retort out of the Sandbath,
shatter it in two, take the remnants out, grind it fine put it in another Retort and pour all the Phlegma
and Spiritus over it. Now distill, and when the Spiritus has gone over, take the receiver of and set
another one in its place, in which you collect the yellow and red Oil. Pour all back and distill once
more in the same Manner. Keep the Oil in a clean Glass, then you have a great Treasure. This the
Ancients called Oleum Mercurii.

This Oil you can use in this Manner: take 1 Quintl well prepared Goldcalx, put this in a clean Phiol
and pour 2 Loths of your Oil over, seal the Phiol, set into our gradual oven and let it pass through
the Colours. When it has become Fixed, take your Tincture out, grind it fine, put in another Phiol
and pour so much Oil over, that it becomes like a Mush, seal the Glass and let the Matter go through
the Colours. This you can repeat as often as you like, then you have the Lapis Mineralis, and you
can use such on Quicksilver, as you have been taught, changing it into a fixed red Powder, and then
use it on Gold.

If you have no Rotgiltigerz, then perform your Work with Wissmuth, also called Magnesia.

Fifth Book

How from the Magnesia or the Wissmuth, which the Ancients called
Elektrum, the Highest Tincture can be Obtained, in the Dry, as well as the
Wet Way.

Here You Will Find It

So that You shall have no lack of Manipulations, then know, that from out of the Earth is brought a
certain Matter forth, from which the Ancients prepared their Lapis Medicinalis, yea the true Stone
of the Ancients, called Magnesia, a black, heavy lump of unseemly appearance. And this Magnesia
is nothing else but a mineral, which the Ancients called Puch. In such is found in great Amount the
Spiritus Mundi or Mercurii, yea the right Semen Metallorum.

When You from this Subject per se absque additamento, and before such has been in the Fire,
vulgari modo per retortam a Liqour, of sweet and wondrous Abilities, distil, and one only takes
little of such in a small Glass and sets a dry Plant or a Flower complete with Roots in it, then such
will within a few Hours again become green, as it just came fresh from the Ground. Even more
remarkable is, when one from such a Herb only puts its Salt in a small Glass with this Menstruum
and keeps it at a gentle Heat, then the Plant begins to grow in 3 to 4 Days and has the Gestalt of the
Herb, from which the Salt was prepared.. But one may not disturb the Glass, or they will fade away;
but if one lets it sit in peace, then they appear again.

Further, in the Magnesia is found the Spiritus Mundi that has become the true Semen seu
Principium Metallorum. But how to get the seeding Parts out of the Magnesia, then the first modus
is, that one take such fresh, as it is dug out of the Mountains, grind such fine and fill a Retort with
such, immure the Retort into an Oven and give gentle Fire, that such not flow. Give the 1, 2., and 3.
Degree, then you will have a sweet Spiritum or Liqour. Take out the Caput Mortuum and calcinate
it, leach a Salt out of it, purify it by Solving, Filtering and Coagulating, then pour your over distilled
Liqour upon it and set them to Putrefy together 4 Days and Nights, then the Salt will resolve. Pour
Your Liqour of in a clean Glass, set this Glass in a cold Place in the sand; then Crystals will form,
so you have the Vitriolum Philosophorum. Collect all these Crystals and dry them. You can now
Work with such in the following manner: Let them turn into a Liqour in Steambath, and unite this
Liqour with Gold, seal such in a Phiol and let them go through the Colours together, then you have
Lapis Medicinalis.

Or: When Your Crystals have dried, then take them, put them into a glass Ball, seal it up well (melt
it shut), set it on our Gradual Oven and make the Salt fix per Gradus, while you keep turning around
the Ball, so that what sublimes up, returns to the Bottom, this continue for so long, until all has
become fixed. Then take it out and extract it with rectified Spirit of Wine. Pour of the extract and
distil of the Spiritus again until a liquid Salt. Put this Salt in the Cellar and let it liquefy in the moist
Air or leave it in Powder form, grind together 2 Loth with 2 Quintl Gold Calx, seal them with each
other in a Phiol and let them go through the Colours. With the Liqour or Powder You can imbibe or
augment it, as often as you please, so you have the Lapis Mineralis for the Metals.

Or make it such: Take Salmiak and living Kalk equal of each, cement such with each other 4 Hours,
(wash, extract) the Salmiak out again, coagulate it in (reduce it) and when it weighs 3/4 Pounds,
then add to such another 1/2 Pound Salmiak and just as much living Kalk. Cement also and reduce
again (1). What is Coagulated Cement again and extract and coagulate. Let the Coagulate Liquify to
an Oil in the Cellar. Pour this Oil on the finely ground Magnesia and set them to Digest together for
several Days in a Flask, then the Solution becomes grass green. Pour the green Solution of and add
fresh Oil, and do this so often that no more is extracted. Then pour all Extractions together in a
Flask, distil of some Phlegma and set the rest in the Cold, then Crystals will form, and You will
have grass green Vitriol, which the Ancients called the green Lion or the green Dragon. This is the
true Vitriol of the Wise, the green growing Salt. Such Salt dry somewhat, grind it fine, mix it with a
fat red Earth, make balls out of it, dry them and fill a Retort with such, distil there from vilgari
modo a Spiritus, which You then pour back and at least three Times must abstract from the Caput
Mortuum, then separate the Phlegma. But it is better if, after you have driven of the Spiritus, you
take the Caput Mortuum, extract all Salt out of it, pour the passed over Spiritus upon it and distil of
the Spiritus several Times per cohobando. But the above is also not to be rejected. Then separate all
Phlegma from it, until in fundo a fair green Oil remains. On this Oil pour the Phlegma with the
Spiritus, or better: distil beforehand the Spiritus of from the Phlegma, pour it on the remaining
Liqour and abstract this several Times from the Oil, until Your Oil is as thick as a liquid Pitch, then
You have the “Chaos” of the Ancients. Then put this Pitch in a Phiol, seal it hermetically and set it
to putrefy in a gentle Heat, then the Matter will resolve into a crystalline Spiritus and a brown red
Earth. This Spiritus is the Mercurius Philosophorum or the Columba Dianae. Rectify such several
Times, to rid it of all Phlegma; with the Phlegma extract the Sulphur from the brown Earth, and
after Calcination of the Residue also leach out the Sal fixus. Then pour the Spiritus on the Sulphur
and the Salt in a Phiol, seal this and set them to Circulate together, until everything has been solved
and united. Then let it go through the Colours and become fixed on our Gradualoven. When it now
has become a blood red fixed Powder, then take this Powder, add purified Gold to it and set them to
Ferment together in a Melting Fire, then you will have a Tincture, of which 1 Grain will transform
one whole Loth of imperfect Metal into Gold.

Further you should also know: take our Matter, but there are two kinds of such, one is lunarian, the
other is solaric (1). The Lunaria is called Magnesia; it is grey and has all kinds of Colours like a
Doves neck. The other is all shiny grey as Velvet. Both are heavy in weight and easy to get. The
Lunarian, I say, is better to work on and also resolves faster. Now take such, grind it fine and lay it
out on various Glass bowls. Set them out in the Night under open Sky in the springtime; so that
Dew falls on it and the Moon and Stars shine upon it, but let not rain come to it. In the Daytime,
when the Sun shines, set them aside, and at Nightime, when the Sky is clear, set them out again; and
this continue for so long, that Your Matter begins to crumble, become greasy and turn green. You
can also gently moisten such with fresh Dew and so expose such to the Air in the Night, but set in a
shady moist spot during the Day. Then put all Your Matter into a tall Flask, lute it, set it in a gentle
Heat and let it putrefy for 4 Weeks in Balneum Marie. Then mount a snouted Helm upon it, lute
well and distil very gently the Spirit over. When such has passed over, set another Glass, set the
Flask in ashes and give a stronger Fire, so that all Phlegma passes over; this also save separately, so
the Corpus remains all dry at the Bottom of the Flask. You cal also perform this Work with a Retort
and give a strong Fire at the End, so that all white Fogs have passed. Then take this Matter out of
the Retort, set it again in the Air to be impregnated and moisten it just a little with Dew. After 4
Weeks of Putrefying distil and repeat everything also a third Time. Then take all the remaining
Matter and put in a glass Retort, and digest them together for a few Days. Then distil such of again
and cohobate such two to three Times. Finally give a strong Fire, so that all passes over. This

Spiritus pour into a Phiol, seal such, set it to digest for 4 weeks in a Waterbath, then distil the
Spiritus of, firstly with a gentle, then a strong Fire; draw of the Phlegma separately. Rectify the
Spiritus so many Times that it becomes lovely and penetrant and store it well. The above, remaining
Caput Mortuum calcine and draw with the Phlegma a Salt out of such. Clarify this Salt
through Solve and Coagula, then pour Your Spiritus over, seal such in a Phiol and digest them in
Waterbath, until the Salt is solved, then Your Liqour Universalis is prepared. (2)

Or: When You have driven the Spiritus from the Corpus, then take such Caput Mortuum, bring it
into a Sublimatorium and sublime from it, what will ascend. These “Flores” (flowers, sublimate) set
aside, after you have sublimed them some more Times per se. These are the Columbae Dianae.
Save such or unite them with the Spiritus and distil all over in a Retort cohobando. Out of the Caput
Mortuum You must extract the Sulphur, but there is only a little, as the greater Part was sublimated,
so that this is not worth the Effort. If you pour the Phlegma on the Caput Mortuum, it does extract a
redness, but too little. As nothing Extraneous is allowed to be added to the Work, it is better, one
leaves this Work and only calcines the Caput Mortuum, then extract the Salt, clarify it and them
conjugate it with the Spiritus, set them in a cold Place and let Crystals shoot. If no Crystals will
shoot, then only add so much of the Phlegma, that You think it is enough. Then set it aside, then
Cyrtals will shoot, collect them all, place them in a Glass Ball, seal such, lay it in our secret Oven
and let it stay there and turn it around until fixedness, then the Lapis Medicinalis is finished, and
only has to be extracted with a pure Spirit of Wine, as already taught.

Or: Pour Your Liqour on the Salt in a Phiol, seal such, set it to Digest for 4 Weeks, then all Salt will
solve, unite with the Spiritus Mercurii and become a Liqour, with which You can go to Work.

So you can also take the Crystals, seal such in a Phiol and let stand in Waterbath for so long, that
the Crystals have been solved in them selves, then you again have the Liqour Universalis, with
which you can Work. During the Fixation the most beautiful Colours appear, to which you must
adjust the Gradus ignis.

You can also take your Crystals, grind fine and, when such weigh 1/2 Pound, grind 1/4 Pound of
well washed and purified Quicksilver into it, put them together in a large glass Bowl, seal such
hermetically and sublimate them together in Sandbath. What one day sublimates, you can on the
next day turn around, until everything has become a red Powder. Then you can take this Powder out
and extract with rectified Wine Spirit, pour the extractions together, and distil of until a red Salt.
This Salt let flow into an Oil on a Glass ( tafel, plate?); with the Oil you can now Work after the
given Teaching.

You can also pour such Oil on fresh Quicksilver and distil cohobando, then the Astrum Mercuri
also goes over.

But it is better, if You only Work with the Vitriol and make out of such the Lapis Medicinalis, and
out of such the Lapis Universalis. But what concerns the dry Way, You must proceed thus:

Take the Magnesia and grind it fine, mix into each Pound 1/4 Pound finely ground Tile flour, that
must be freshly fired- the old Tiles carry a Salt with them, that does not belong here- put such in a
good, stone(ware?) Sublimatorium, immure into an Oven and set a helm on the Sublimatorium.
Then begin to give Fire per gradus 48 Hours, whereby You must give a strong Fire the last 12

hours. Switch the Helm several Times, so that, when one is full of Flowers, You take such of and
mount another; and continue thus until all has ascended. When now no more Flores arises, cease the
Fire, join all the Flores in a Flask and sublime them some Times. Finally you can also add a Silver
Kalx and sublimate it a further two Times, then they become nice and pure and You will have a
beautiful Columbae Dianae. These keep well. The Caput Mortuum, that remains, calcine, until it
becomes a grey or brown red Powder, because the Tile flour is there, pour a distilled Water on it
and extract all the Salt, putrefy the Salt, then take of such Salt 4 weight parts and of the Columbae
Dianae 2 Parts, grind them with each other and let them go through the Colours. With the Columba
You can augment the Work. Or do as this: Take the Salt and grind it with a Gold Kalx and then with
the Columbae Dianae and let them go through the Colours together.

You can also proceed in this Manner: If you wish to extract the Salt, You can do it with Wine
Vinegar. Distil of the Vinegar leaving the Salt, ablute (wash, purify) the Salt the Salt and clarify
with distilled Rainwater. Then take fresh Matter, a 1/2 Pound is enough, and calcine such.

During the Calcination beware it does not Flow. When now reduced to a grey Ash, then take of
such Ashes 4 Loths and 8 loths of Your Salt and melt in a crucible into a brittle Vitrum (glasslike
mass). Of this Vitrum take 4 Loths and of the Columba 8 Loths , grind them together, put into a
strong Phiol, seal such, set it in Sand and give Fire per gradus, until all has become a fixed Mass.
Then take it out, grind it fine, grind 4 Loth of Columba into it, put into a Phiol and proceed as
before. Continue, until all Your Columba is used up, then you have the Lapis Medicinalis fixus. But
if You want to make Lapis Universalis out of such, then let Gold flow and carry, when it is flowing,
of this Lapis 4 Loth on 1 Loth Gold, let it flow well, then such will become a brittle red Mass. One
Grain of this transforms 1 Loth of other Metals into Gold.

Summa: You can with the Magnesia and the Liqour Universalis complete Your Work from the
microcosmic and vegetable, even better than (from?) the macrocosmic Kingdom. So You see, that
the Allmighty has prepared different ways for You, when only Your Heart be righteous, that Your
Nature must follow You; if not, I advise You, make first Your self fit for this by truly Turning Your
Heart to God Your Creator and trust Him with all Your Heart, then everything will proceed happily.
Now remains another Work from the Rotgiltigerz.

1. This Saturn is clearly identified in Isaia chapt. 54, verses 11, 12, 13, and 16, which is laid out
nicely by a certain Erth Von Naxagoras. The Words of the Prophet are these: “You plagued, shaken
by all Weathers and inconsolable. See I am, that sets your Stones after rank in Puch and will found
you with Saphires. Your Gates shall be Carbuncles and all you Borders Stones of Yearning. And all

free each other. There after sublime with proper diplomato out of MR a mercurial Sal armoniacum,
or philosophical alumen plumosum, solve such in the Spirit of Dew S. L. a. and draw with it the
Soul out of the remaining Corpus, and bring the Core of the Central Salt through the mediation of
the perfected Dew S. L. artis. There after bring the 3 Principles into Solution in BR, and resolve in

balneo sicco. Now it is the Philosophical Azoth, a sulphureous Water, a Lympha, heavy from
Mercurio, a bright Water, bitter of Tartaro, a blessed Menstruum, the Liqour, that radically
dissolves Gold, such perfectly cooked with its own Ferment and augmented with its own Water, then
you have the Blessings of the Lord; for this praise the Lord in Eternity, Amen.”

• Our Ancients called the Matter Puch, but it is not the common Stibium, but a black grey
Stone, often also embellished with white and other fair Colours, heavy in Weight. (R.

Sixth Book

Of the Preparation of Salis Circulati

The Coagulated Water is the Mother of all Metals, for from Water everything has arisen in the
beginning of the great Creation of the World, and at this Moment nothing could exist. If not this
Water, as the Primum Agens of all Things, came down from Heaven and shared with all Things
Living. When it coagulates, then it is a Rock and Beam of Nature, also a hidden and sealed Well
that can not be opened by anyone. Therefore you should note this: It is the Primum Ens seu Quinta
Essentia Elementi Aquae and the Center of all Metals and Minerals, from it from it all Things
become their Life, and in it they also must die again, that they thereby again can appear much more
glorious and clarified.

Take therefore a pure Sal Gemmae pour over it two Parts ( per weight) Water- remark: use putrefied
Rainwater- mixed with pressed (rettichsaft, ?? its like a large radishlike thing) (1/5 the amount of
Water); that I make you use such, is because, that such furthers the Putrefaction, and set them with
each other for three Months in gentle Heat. Then set it in the Cold, let it freeze and putrefy again 1
Month. So then put in a well reinforced Retort, set such in an Oven, where you can give the Gradus
Ignis and drive over, what will go. Take out the Remains, put them in a good melting Crucible and
let it flow in a strong Fire. Then again put it in a Retort, set this in an Oven for 24 Hours and give a
Flaming Fire, so that the Salt is reverberated. You may only give Fire so, that Flames lick around
the Retort, but do not bring the Salt to Flow! Then take it out, put in a Glassbowl, set this in a moist
Cellar and let it flow into a Liquor. Pour the Liquor in a Flask, add also the above Distillate, seal the
Flask and let them Putrefy together for 14 days and nights, then distil of until an oily Substance
remains. Into this “Oil” pour a highly rectified Spiritus Vini. Let it stand, so Faeces will settle to the
Bottom. Pour the (clear, pure) of and set it in the Cellar, let Crystals form and collect the same. N.
B. : Remark, it is better, you leave out the Distillate at the beginning and first now pour such over
the Crystals, so that you so often can distil of from it, until a fixed Oil in fundo ( Bottom of the
Retort) remains and nothing Sweet goes over anymore. Then set it for a Month in Digestion to
Putrefy. Then set the Flask in an Ashbath and distil through Cohobation over for so long, until all
has risen over the Helmet not the long Road make you Dreary, then you will achieve the Primum
Entem Salis, yea, the right Salt-Key and Universal-Liquor, an Arcanum or Key, with which to
unlock all Secrets, such as sealed Gold, Silver and Mercury, as also in other Metals and Minerals.

For if you pour this Liquor on Quicksilver in a Retort, such is solved and you only need to set the
Retort in a Sandbath and Distil over per Cohobando, then it will pass over except a useless Earth,
and such can be treated ad infinitum, until al Liquor passes over as a heavy Oil. Now pour such Oil
on a pure, thinly beaten Gold or Silver, then such will dissolve as Ice in hot Water. From Gold it
becomes reddish, but from Silver it becomes yellowish. You can then seal this Liquor in a Phiol and
let them go through the Colours together, and then you have the Lapis Medicinalis, to be universally
applied on all diseases.

Further you can also proceed with this Sal Circulato in this manner: Take of the Magnesia, that is
Wissmuth, grind and pestle such fine, put it in a Flask and pour of your Sal Circulati so much there
upon, that it gets to stand three Fingers breadths high above it, set them together in the Digestion,
then the Liquor will become grass green. The coloured pour of and a fresh is added, and repeat this
until no more is coloured, then you have a Universal Liquor, pour all Extracts together and distil
over some times per Cohobando, then it is finished. With this you can proceed with the Work and

through Unification with Gold and Silver and make firstly the Lapis Medicinalis and thereafter the
Lapis Philosophorum Universalis.

There are also other applications of this Liquor. You can extract a Rotgiltigerz with such and let
them per se go through the Colours together and change them into Lapis Medicinalis. Also with
Hornerz (Hornblende) you can perform this Labour, for this Liquor is of such a Nature, that it can
be used universally in all Things, for it is Quinta Essentia and carries with it the preserving Being of
all Nature. Its preparation is a boring Road, but wonderful and not costly. The Putrefaction demands
the longest Time, otherwise the Labour is neither hard nor dangerous.

Even though there are more Ways, to prepare this Liquor, then the previous is the safest and best.
For Example the Rocksalt can be extracted with its own Spiritus Salis; the Extracts are poured in a
Retort and distilled over per Cohobando, after they have been set to putrefy for at least a Month;
until all the Salt has been resolved, it will pass over as an oily Being. Finally all Phlegma is
separated in Waterbath.
