Mapinfo GIS Officer BRERC has many datasets that require entering onto our GIS system. This can be an
excellent opportunity for university students who hope to go into environmental disciplines that require GIS to get some
practical experience. Tasks may incl working with & entering Hedge data, Phase 1 & Priority Habitat data, creating maps for
publication, processing of archive data & possible training in producing the mapped elements of data enquiries. BUT
Computerate to a good level, comfortable using MS Windows, Word, Excel & similar, knowledge of GIS systems helpful but
not essential.
Data Enquiries Assistant Data enquiries encompass many aspects of the work that BRERC does, from
administration of the service through to complex usage of our MapInfo GIS system. Getting involved with the data enquiry
process is an excellent way to gain experience of how environmental data gets used, especially in a commercial context. Incl
administration of enquiries, updating the Enquiry database, scanning paper files & extensive use of our Mapinfo GIS system
for performing enquiries. BUT As above.
Data Entry Volunteers BRERC has over a million records on a ‘main’ database, but there are an estimated
further 2 million to enter onto computer, with more being provided to us all the time. The data ranges from single records of
birds, butterflies & mammals to whole reports listing many species. Verify, enter & check species data collected by both
amateurs & professionals. We use our own database & entry systems designed in house, & full training is provided on how to
use these. BUT A broad knowledge of common UK wildlife is a great help. Computerate an advantage.
Office Management Volunteer BRERC has many admin tasks but no identified staff support for carrying out these tasks.
Our members of staff frequently have requirements for administration work to be completed, or ideas for office tasks that will
make our day to day work easier. Recent examples of work completed are organising a photograph session with Bristol City
Council for new staff ID badges, cataloguing our archive of CDs & retyping our telephone book. There are a number of more
regular admin tasks that you will also get involved with. BUT Good computer skills & a good telephone manner are

North Harris Trust declares war on Giant Rhubarb – John Muir Trust
The North Harris Trust has begun a project to eradicate invasive giant rhubarb from the island with the help of volunteers
from the John Muir Trust.
Harris is better known for its stunning beaches and rugged mountains, but on the outskirts of Tarbert pockets of jungle are
quickly spreading.

National Park Authority seeks public views on future of Losehill Hall learning centre
The Peak District National Park Authority is asking for people’s views on the future of its Losehill Hall environmental learning
and conference centre in Castleton.
With Government spending cuts forecast at 20-30 per cent, the Authority is faced with finding savings of £1m-£1.9million
over four years.
Closure of Losehill Hall would save an estimated £250,000 to £300,000 a year in running costs, contributing an estimated 15
per cent to the Authority’s required savings over four years and, if sold, a substantial capital income.

New study shows one fifth of the world’s plants are under threat of extinction – Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
A global analysis of extinction risk for the world's plants, conducted by Kew together with the Natural History Museum,
London and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has revealed that the world’s plants are as threatened
as mammals, with one in five of the world’s plant species threatened with extinction.

Planning skylark plots now can benefit wildlife and farmers – RSPB (and NFU)
Farmers can give wildlife, and the Campaign for the Farmed Environment, a helping hand by planning skylark plots into their
Autumn drilling.
RSPB and NFU advisors are urging farmers to consider putting skylark plots in place either by turning off the drill during
sowing or by spraying out patches at a later date. As well as providing a boost for wildlife the plots are also counted as a key

Roaming reds hit Newcastle, As Red Squirrel Week approaches. The Wildlife Trusts
In the run up to red squirrel week – Saturday 2 to Sunday 10 October – Northumberland Wildlife Trust has reported some
exciting sightings that could mean the native mammal’s population is expanding into a new urban location.
In the last week, staff at the Trust have seen at least one red regularly visiting the grounds of its headquarters in St Nicholas
Park, Newcastle, news of which has triggered a number of other sightings being reported in the area.

New research project to tackle water pollution from agriculture - DEFRA

Farmers are getting involved in one of the largest studies of its kind to establish the best ways of halting water pollution from
agriculture.
They will develop an understanding of how pollutants move through river systems and will test up to 80 methods for reducing
their impact. These include satellite technology (GPS) to ensure fertiliser is spread in the right places; better-designed farm
yards to stop pollution draining into fields and rivers; and designing ditches and ponds to soak up substances.

Woodland nature reserve gets boost for blooms – Devon Wildlife Trust
Andrew’s Wood, a 28 hectare nature reserve in the South Hams, has received a grant of nearly £50,000 to help improve the
prospects of Britain’s largest colony of a rare plant: the rare heath lobelia.
Devon Wildlife Trust purchased 5½ hectares of adjoining grassland in late 2009, extending the nature reserve by 20%. The
new land is dominated by scrub but offers great potential for extending the reserve’s heath lobelia population.

Footpath update, Yorkshire Dales National Park - Ramblers

Wheelchair users and walkers with limited mobility will soon be able to enjoy new views of Upper Wharfedale in the Yorkshire
Dales National Park, thanks to a new level path between Buckden and Hubberholme. The facelift comes courtesy of the
Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) and the National Trust, and the work will be carried out by YDNPA Ranger
staff, Dales Volunteers and National Trust staff and volunteers over the next week.

More than half a million hectares now coming into Uplands ELS as 3,000 farmers sign up – Natural England
More than 500,000 hectares of farmland are coming under Uplands Entry Level Stewardship (Uplands ELS) as farmers join
the scheme in increasing numbers, Natural England figures show.
The area covered by the scheme has almost doubled in just two months and includes celebrated landscapes such as the
White Peak area in the Peak District and Clun Valley in the Shropshire Hills.
At least 3,000 hill farmers and land managers have signed up to Uplands ELS since the first agreements began in July. Each
one will earn on average £57,000 over the course of their five-year agreement.

New horizons for West Midlands’ woodland cover – Forestry Commission

The Forestry Commission is offering a share of £3 million to farmers, land owners and managers who sign up to create
much-needed woodland in the West Midlands.

Debrett's cyclist etiquette guide for London canals – BBC News

Cyclists are being asked to adopt Victorian-style manners and make sure they "ting ting" when approaching pedestrians on
London's busy towpaths.
British Waterways said complaints from pedestrians and cyclists sharing Regents Canal led it to issue a guide from etiquette
authority Debrett's.
The guide asks walkers to give way to cyclists and riders are reminded to "smile" and say "a polite thank you".

Unions have welcomed the increase in the minimum wage
The national minimum wage has risen to £5.93 an hour from £5.80 and for the first time people aged 21 will benefit from the
rate. Previously the full rate applied to employees aged 22 and older.
Also: New equality rights in workplace come into force
"Everyone is protected by the new law," says the Equality and Human Rights Commission New rules aimed at banning
discrimination by employers, covering areas such as age, disability and pay, have come into force.
