DYSTOPIA IN THE 21ST CENTURY

ABSTRACT

Those who have read George Orwell’s ‘1984’ know that the book, written about 70
years ago, predicts a future where the term privacy is unheard of. The government
watches every move of yours (enunciated with the use of the phrase -‘Big Brother
is Watching You’) and the information that people receive is controlled and
modified to the suit the government’s whims. This is a chilling concept to read, and
even more terrifying is the fact that such a dystopian future is slowly coming to
life. In countries like China and North Korea, where mass surveillance, high-tech
citizen monitoring, and controlled access to the Internet is on the rise, we, the
people are no longer guaranteed that our personal information is in safe hands.

Technology, which now seems indispensable, is gradually wreaking havoc in our

lives. Shows like ‘Black Mirror’ and several movies like ‘Her’ and ‘The Circle’ are
an example of how the same technology that has become something similar to an
extension of our bodies can result in unimaginable horrors when in wrong hands.

This article aims to show how technology in general, and social media, in
particular, have exposed us and our activities to the entire world and there is
nothing stopping it from being used against us.
SYNOPSIS
RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
1) To examine the onset of the invasion of privacy from across a screen.
2) To explore how television shows and movies have played a role in alerting
the public about the dangers of technology.
OBJECTIVE:
This project aims to look into different examples of manipulation of information,
traps which vulnerable netizens fall into and give an idea of what the future holds
for us.
SIGNIFICANCE:
It is of utmost importance, in this age of smartphones and ready-to-access
information, that we’re well aware and informed of what dangers lurk in every
action of ours.

The Circle – SeeChange

1984

The class hierarchy of Oceania has three levels:

 (I) the upper-class Inner Party, the elite ruling minority, who make up 2% of the population.

 (II) the middle-class Outer Party, who make up 13% of the population.

 (III) the lower-class Proletariat, who make up 85% of the population and represent the
uneducated working class.
As the government, the Party controls the population with four ministries:

 the Ministry of Peace deals with war and defence.

 the Ministry of Plenty deals with economic affairs (rationing and starvation).

 the Ministry of Love deals with law and order (torture and brainwashing).

 the Ministry of Truth deals with news, entertainment, education and art (propaganda).
The protagonist Winston Smith, a member of the Outer Party, works in the Records Department of
the Ministry of Truth as an editor, revising historical records, to make the past conform to the ever-
changing party line and deleting references to unpersons, people who have been "vaporised", i.e.,
not only killed by the state but denied existence even in history or memory.
The story of Winston Smith begins on 4 April 1984: "It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks
were striking thirteen." Yet he is uncertain of the true date, given the regime's continual rewriting and
manipulation of history.[30]

Trump’s Lies
 President Trump is confusing weather with climate.

 Trump willfully ignores the extensive scientific evidence of climate

change compiled by the federal government he now leads.

 Lie
“China will be able to increase these emissions by a staggering number
of years—13. They can do whatever they want for 13 years. Not us.”
Reality- China committed to reduce its carbon intensity (carbon dioxide
emissions per unit of GDP) by 60 to 65 percent of 2005 levels.
