How To Use
Directions for the Teacher:
Have your students use the following
pages to create their very own
science interactive notebook!

Each page will have different cutouts.

Have students read the instructions
on each page and use the dotted lines
to help them know which pieces to
cut and place in their notebook. It’s
that easy!
Page 7 is the student cover of the
unit.

Towards the end of the resource, you

will find the answer key pages. Feel
free to use them as a guide with your
students.

Enjoy!

Overview: Photosynthesis is a process which

plants use to make their own food. Most plants
can make their own food when they need it, by
using light.

Chloroplasts
Overview: Chloroplasts are structures found in the cells
of plants that convert sunlight into food energy that the
plants need. Chloroplasts are found in the leaves of
plants. The chloroplasts also take in carbon dioxide, water
and light. Then it turns them into sugar and oxygen. This
sugar is used by the plants as food. The oxygen then goes
out into the atmosphere. This process of converting sun
into energy is called photosynthesis.

Directions: Label the parts of a chloroplast

Parts of a Leaf
Overview: All the different parts of a leaf work together to
help the plant stay healthy and alive. The outside layer of a
leaf is called the epidermis. The epidermis has a waxy
coating that is called a cuticle. It helps to keep water stored
inside the plant. The tiny pores in a leaf are called stomata.
The tiny pores open and close, letting in and out carbon
dioxide and oxygen. The guard cells regulate when the
stomata opens or closes.

Brain Break
Read fun facts about plants while you color!
Did you know…
-Some plants are carnivores. The Venus Flytrap eats flies!
-Plant matter can eventually turn into coal due to a process known as
metamorphosis.
-There are over 200,000 species of plants and the list continues to
grow!
-68% of plants are in danger of going extinct.
-70,000 different plant species are used for medicine.
-The oldest living trees are Bristlecone pines. The oldest known
bristlecone pine is more than 4,700 years old!
