cognitive and social & emotional milestones.

Typical development refers to children acquiring developmental milestones similar to majority of children their same
age.

Atypical development is the term given to the child if he reaches developmental milestones earlier or later than other
children his/her age

Learning Objectives Knowledge Define developmental milestones;

Elements of the Plan Methodology
Preparations Motivation/Intro Teacher: Let us play a game called the boat is sinking. I
- How will I make the learners ready? ductory Activity am going to say a number and you are to group
- How do I prepare the learners for the new
lesson? yourselves according to the number that I have said. A
- How will I connect my new lesson with the consequence will be given to those who will be out

from the game.

Students follow the teacher and put the chairs on the

side.

Teacher: Okay group yourselves into 4.

Student: (Follows the instruction)
(The game will continue until finally they will be
grouped into 5. Those who are unable to group
themselves will be placed in the chosen group after the
consequence.)
Teacher: I have here a set of questions which you will
be answering in one whole yellow pad. We are going to
2

answer the questions one by one and check it

afterwards.

and shake toys they are holding?
a. infancy
b. early childhood
c. middle childhood
d. adolescence

2. Infants at this age range starts to babble sounds like

“ba-ba-ba-ba”. Which stage does this occur in the
child’s development?
a. infancy
b. early childhood
c. middle childhood
d. adolescence

3. Pretend play is one of the developmental milestones

which occur at this stage. Which stage is being
mentioned?

learners arrive at?
Students will work with their group and define
developmental milestones.

Group1: We define developmental milestones as sets of age

specific skills to be developed according to their age.

Group2: Developmental milestones are skills that children

can do as they grow and develop.

Teacher: That’s great. All of you got it correctly. To

summarize your answers, Developmental Milestones are
sets of functional skills or age-specific tasks that most
children can do at a certain age tasks. 5 points will be given
to your participation. Now if you are able to answer the
questions correctly, we can say that your child is developing
typically. But what do you mean by typical development?
Student1: Typical development means normal
development.
Teacher: Okay very good. But when can we say that the
child’s development is normal?
Student2: When it follows the same pattern as everyone
else.
Teacher: Very good. Now who can sum up all of their
answers?
Student3: Typical development refers to the type of
development that follows the same pattern as everyone
else.
Teacher: Very good. You got the idea! But what will happen
if you won’t be able to follow all these developmental
milestones?

Student: The child will develop abnormally.

Student2: It will not be normal development anymore.

Teacher: Very good. Your answers are all correct. Although

the course that the child will likely take may not be normal,
it will not be called as abnormal, instead it will be called as
atypical development. Atypical development is the term
given to the child if he reaches developmental milestones
earlier or later than other children his/her age

Abstraction Teacher: If you are able to answer the questions

correctly, then your children is developing typically. If
not, then it may be developing atypically. But again,
when can we say that your child is developing
atypically?
Student: When he doesn’t follow the same
developmental pattern as everyone else.
Teacher: Very good! What if they are develop earlier or
later than their peers?
Student: It is still Atypical Development.
Teacher: Great! That’s correct. Atypical Development is
the term given to the child if he reaches developmental
milestones earlier or later than other children his/her age
Each developmental stage has their own
developmental milestones but this time, we are only
going to tackle 4 stages. Starting from infancy, early
4

childhood, late childhood, and adolescence. Each stage

also has developmental milestones from these 3
categories: physical milestones; language milestones;
and social & emotional milestones.
Teacher: This time, I am going to instruct everyone for
our activity next meeting. You are going to search for
the following developmental milestones in 3
categories. Develop a questionnaire which you will use
to conduct a survey. 15 questions, 5 for each category
which is answerable by yes or no. It should be
conducted to your assigned developmental stages.

The students will form a group and prepare their tasks.

Practice Application The students will conduct their survey after the teacher
- What practice approved their survey questions.
exercises/application activities will
I give to the learners?
