Industry 4.

0 and Manufacturing Sector

Introduction:

Industry 4.0 refers to the application of automation and data exchange in manufacturing
technologies. Four technologies which are playing a vital role in making Industry 4.0 a revolution of
its kind are: 1. Cyber-physical systems, 2. The Internet of things, 3. Cloud computing, and 4. Cognitive
computing [1]. Industry 4.0 revolution which is also known as Fourth Industrial Revolution has already
started taking place in India and is redefining old school manufacturing operations conclusively.

Industry 4.0 is also referred to as ‘Smart Factory’ (which means smart manufacturing) and is the
future of manufacturing. Today, manufacturing machines are getting smarter by the day, paving the
way for responsive and efficient manufacturing infrastructure. The main objective of Industry 4.0 is
to uplift Indian manufacturing ecosystem by making tangible improvements in efficiency, safety,
profitability and performance while also minimizing environmental impact [2].

Literature Review:

HR Conclave, whose topic this year was ‘Industry 4.0’, held on 1 st March 2019 at BITS Pilani, Pilani
Campus saw panels of Human Resource and Industry professionals from across India. The panellist
who contributed to the manufacturing sector of Industry 4.0 were namely Mr. Naveen, Mr. Jagat, Mr.
Ramachandran, Mr. Nandakumar and Mr. Rajiv. They actively participated in giving their opinions
about what skills and attitudes are required for people to get themselves ready for manufacturing
sector in the era of Industry 4.0. They were first requested to depict the changes they see in Industry
4.0 from previous Industrial revolutions and then were asked to enlist all the skills they think are
important to imbibe those changes. The panellist also cleared the doubt of students and faculty
members raised during the question and answer round. Mr. Naveen talked about being able to grow
with the economy, Mr Jagat talked about adapting yourself to new industry, Mr. Ramachandran
talked about cultural change along with upskilling is required, Mr. Nandakumar gave an example of
Tata Mortors and talked about implementation of automation( There are less people in
manufacturing plant of Tata Motors but still the quality and profitability is more) and Mr. Rajiv talked
about human revolution( Earlier employees used physical power to work, now they use their mind).
