Manual coM.sat Analogue Gateway

1 Description of Device
The coM.sat Analogue Gateway mobile communications adapter establishes a transition from the
fixed line to the GSM cellular network. This way calls from the fixed line telephone system to the GSM
network (and vice versa) are possible without incurring the network operators' costly interconnection
charges
The operation of the coM.sat Analogue Gateway requires a small plug-in card, specifically a SIM card
(subscriber identity module card).
Depending on the SIM card utilised, access to either the GSM 900 or GSM 1800 networks is possible.

Using the integrated serial interface it is possible to send and receive PC-data as well as PC-FAX. It is
not possible, however, to operate modems or FAX machines via the two-wire telephone line.

There are two different ways of using the device with the local telephone system. As a standard trunk
line, whereby the coM.sat Analogue Gateway is connected to the analogue trunk module of the
telephone system. Or as an extension to the telephone system as a called/calling subscriber.

The rear panel features a bipolar connector for the external power supply (9V DC), as well as an SMB
connector (aerial) with an FME adapter for a dual-band antenna.
Two 6-pin modular jacks (PABX and Phone) allow for the connection to the telephone system.
Depending on the type of use, the device is either connected to the trunk line via the right-hand
modular jack (Phone) or it is used as an extension via the left-hand modular jack (PABX)

On power-up (or following a power outage) the device automatically initialises itself and automatically
logs into the designated GSM network. All programmed parameters are preserved.

Ex factory, the device is in installation mode.

2 Trunk Line Type Operation

2.1 Out-bound Calls (Telephone System Î GSM-Network)
The internal subscriber seizes the trunk line the coM.sat Analog Gateway is connected to and
receives a dial tone. The device displays dialling readiness.

2.1.1 Dialling Procedure

Dialling is possible with DTMF (Dual Tone Multi Frequency) signals or pulse signals. The dialled
number is seen to be recognised and dialling to be completed after the defined dialling interval has
passed. If none has been set, dialling is completed 3 seconds after the last digit. If DTMF is used,
dialling may be completed by the '#' button. The number is then sent without waiting for the defined
interval. Any further dialling is ignored.

2.1.2 Restrictions
Out-bound calls can be disabled depending on the type of use. In order to use this feature, it must be
programmed (please refer to the chapter on installation as well as appendix A).

One- and two-digit numbers are not allowed. The subscriber instantly receives the number-
unobtainable tone.

2.1.3 The Busy State

The busy state of the 2-wire interface is displayed by the yellow LED (Active). The end of the busy
state is acoustically marked by the busy signal. The duration for which the dial and busy tone are
issued, are programmable. If these parameters haven't been set, these tones cease after 90 seconds.

2.1.4 Telephone Charge Display

The device is able to generate charge information with active out-bound calls. This information does
not originate from the network operator, it is generated artificially.

Adjustable parameters:

- Charge signal frequency 12kHz/16kHz

- Charge pulse width
- Interval between pulses

2.1.5 Disconnecting
When the handset is put down, the active call is disconnected instantly. If the call is ended by the
GSM subscriber, the busy signal is issued.

2.2 In-bound Calls (GSM-Network Î Telephone System)

An in-bound call is signalled by the ringing voltage, the coM.sat Analogue Gateway behaves like the
trunk.
If the trunk line port is busy, the GSM subscriber receives a call-not-accepted signal.
Signalling of rejected calls (e.g. busy signal or voice announcement) largely depends on the network
operator.

If the call is accepted by the internal telephone system, a voice connection is established.

3 Analogue Extension Type Operation

3.1 Out-bound Calls (Telephone System Î GSM-Network)
3.1.1 Calling Signals
The internal telephone system subscriber dials the extension number the coM.sat Analogue Gateway
is connected to. The calling signal is recognised (indicated by yellow 'Active' LED) and the device
accepts the internal call.

3.1.2 The Busy State

The extension subscriber receives the internal dial tone, which indicates the device is ready to accept
dialling.
The busy state of the 2-wire port is indicated by the yellow 'Active' LED. The duration of the dial tone
issue is programmable. After the programmed time has passed, the 2-wire link is disconnected. If this
parameter hasn't been set, the loop is cut after 90 seconds.

3.1.3 Dialling Procedure

Now the extension subscriber can dial the number of the desired subscriber.
Note: In this mode (operation of the device as an extension) only DTMF dialling is possible!
The dialled number is seen to be recognised and dialling to be completed after the defined dialling
interval has passed. If none has been set, dialling is completed 3 seconds after the last digit. Dialling
may be completed by the '#' button. The number is the sent without waiting for the defined interval.
Any further dialling is ignored.

3.1.4 Restrictions
Out-bound calls can be disabled depending on the type of use. In order to use this feature, it must be
programmed (please refer to the chapter on installation and to appendix A).

One- and two-digit numbers are not allowed. The subscriber instantly receives the number-
unobtainable tone.

3.1.5 Disconnecting
When the handset is put down, the telephone system's busy tone is analysed. When it is recognised,
the 2-wire link is disconnected.

The number of times the busy signal is repeated (1 to 9 times) can be set in the installation menu (see
Menu Table in appendix A). If, for example, the PABX only issues 5 busy signals, the number of
repetitions should be set to 2 or 3.

If the call is ended by the GSM subscriber, the 2-wire link is disconnected instantly

3.2 In-bound Calls (GSM-Network Î Telephone System)

3.2.1 The Busy State
When there is an in-bound call, the extension the coM.sat Analog Gateway is connected to is seized.
The busy state of the 2-wire interface is indicated by the yellow 'Active' LED.

If the connection cannot be established within 2 seconds, the GSM subscriber receives a call-not-
accepted signal. Signalling of disconnected calls (e.g. busy signal or voice announcement) largely
depends on the network operator.

If the busy state is active, the call is automatically accepted and the GSM subscriber receives the
telephone system's internal dial tone. An extension subscriber can be specifically reached by direct
dial-in of the desired extension number. The GSM cell-phone must be set to 'Send DTMF' in order to
use this feature. This is usually the case.

This connection is subject to telephone charges even though the telephone system issues a
dial tone. The caller is also charged if the system issues a busy signal for the desired
extension.

Using the '∗' button, the GSM subscriber can discontinue the call at any time and subsequently
establish a new connection to another extension within the same telephone system.

3.2.2 Disconnecting
When the handset is put down, the telephone system's busy tone is analysed. When it is recognised,
the 2-wire link is disconnected.

The number of times the busy signal is repeated (1 to 9 times) can be set in the installation menu (see
Menu Table in appendix A). If, for example, the PABX only issues 5 busy signals, the number of
repetitions should be set to 2 or 3.

If the call is ended by the GSM subscriber, the 2-wire link is disconnected instantly

3.3 Preferred Direct Dial-in

Preferred dial-in enables a predefined internal subscriber (preferred extension) to be called either
immediately or after a predefined interval from the GSM network, if no further dialling takes place. The
preferred extension as well as the interval are programmable.

3.3.1 Setting the Preferred Extension

The extension number can only be set in the programming mode.
The input scheme is as follows:

**60*MaxTwentyFourDigits#

Up to 24 digits may be entered.

The extension number for call forwarding is deleted by the following input:

**60*0000#

This input can only be made in the programming mode

3.3.2 Time-dependent Automatic Dial-In

The preferred extension number is called after the set time if no other extension is chosen.
The time after which the call is automatically carried out can only be set in the programming mode.
The input scheme is as follows:

**61*1...9# 1..9 in seconds

During this time the GSM subscriber can dial the extension of his choice.

If the preferred extension is to be called immediately, the following input must be made:

**61*0# '0' represents 'no delay'

If the extension subscriber doesn't answer, or an incorrect number has been dialled, a new
direct dial-in can be initiated by entering the '*' key. The PABX issues a dial tone and a new
extension can be dialled.

4 Installation
Ex factory the coM.sat Analogue Gateway is in set-up mode.

Connected devices (telephone, extension subscriber etc.) are automatically recognised.

The following features are programmable:

• Direction of calls (in-bound/out-bound)

• Dial interval
• Telephone charge pulse
• Ring frequency
• Timer for busy and dial tone
• Busy tone frequency

The features to be programmed can be looked up in appendix A: 'Menu Table'.

If no input is made within 60 seconds, the installation is restarted. To exit the installation mode, enter
the following sequence:

'* * #'

Any input made until this time is stored.

Parameters can also be changed during regular operation (see chapter 4.4).

4.1 Analogue Trunk Line Type Installation

The device must be programmed using a 2-wire analogue telephone that issues DTMF signals. The a-
and b-wires are the two centre pins in the 6-pin modular jack.

On connecting the power supply the green LED (GSM) flashes quickly. At the same time an attention
tone is audible in the phone's handset. This is the menu selection prompt. Input must be made using a
DTMF enabled telephone - preferably one with a display to monitor input.

The menu selection always begins with the starting sequence '∗∗' (asterisk twice). The green LED
goes out and the tone ceases. Now the menu item is entered. The menu item is concluded with '∗' and
the parameter (see menu table) of the chosen item can be input. The parameter and the specific menu
entry are finalised by '#'. If the menu item and parameter were entered correctly, a one-second
confirmation tone is issued after pressing the '#' button.

If input was not correct, a very high three-second tone is issued. In both cases the attention/set-up
tone is again issued and the device is ready for input.

Programmable parameters may be overwritten any number of times.

4.2 Analogue Extension Type Installation

The device is connected to a DTMF-enabled analogue extension of the PABX.
The a- and b-wires are the two centre pins in the 6-pin modular jack.
The device is 'powered up' by connecting the power supply cable. The green LED flashes quickly after
the device's first power-up.

The extension is called and the call is automatically accepted by the coM.sat Analogue Gateway. The
caller receives a quickly pulsing attention tone. This is the menu selection prompt.
Input must be made using a DTMF enabled telephone - preferably one with a display to monitor input.

The following procedures are the same as with the trunk line type installation:

4.3 Completing the Installation

The installation is completed with the '* * #' sequence.

If the device is in the analogue extension mode it automatically performs a restart.

If it is in trunk line mode the devise performs the restart after the handset has been put down.

4.4 Changing the Set-up

The installation mode can be invoked any time during regular operation. For this purpose the
password in the form of following scheme must be entered after the dial tone:

**Password#

If no password has been defined, the standard password is '0000' is (see chapter 4.6) and the access
sequence '**0000#' must be entered.
The installation mode is ended by inputting '* * #'. If no more inputs are made for a period of 60
seconds, all previous input is stored and the installation mode is automatically exited.

4.5 Auxiliary Set-up Access

In case it is necessary to access the device when the programmed mode is unknown, an auxiliary or
emergency access is provided for. In this case the following procedure enables access to the
installation menu:

- Power off device and plug phone into right-hand modular jack ('Phone')
- Power on device Æ device is in trunk line mode
- enter password for the set-up (default password sequence is **0000#) and wait for the quick
set-up tone

Important Note:
Parameters changed during emergency access or primary installation only become effective
when the 'Conclude Programming Sequence '* * #' was entered to finalise the configuration.
To prevent from automatically returning to the emergency set-up after completion of
programming, it is necessary to place the handset in it's cradle for at least one second.

4.6 Password
It is possible to protect the installation menu with a password, thereby preventing unauthorised
persons from making changes to the set-up.

Attention:
If the password is lost, the device must be returned for servicing.
The password always consists of 4 digits. It can be programmed in the set-up mode using the
following input sequence:

**40*FourDigitPassword#

If no password has been set, the default password is '0000'.

4.7 First Steps and parameter settings

4.7.1 Selection of the installation mode
Please, enter the following sequence, if there is no password defined:

∗∗0000#

Please, wait for the programming tone and fast flashing green LED.

4.7.2 PIN code

The PIN code is only necessary, if the SIM card requests for the PIN. In the following example the PIN
is '1234':

∗∗10∗1234#

Please, see appendix A for more parameters.

5 Routing Service
If the telephone system that is to be connected only provides one trunk line port, and this port is to be
reserved for the terrestrial trunk line, then the coM.sat Analogue Gateway can also be used as a
router. Outbound calls are then routed via the fixed or the mobile network depending on the number
dialled.
In order to do so, the fixed line (or the line to be used for routing) is connected to the a/b mode jack
('PABX') and the telephone system to the trunk line mode jack ('Phone').
Configurable network access numbers – for instance the GSM network operator identifier – enable the
device to recognise the respective access and the outgoing call is assigned to the fixed or mobile
network accordingly.

The Routing Service must be explicitly defined (please see the menu table).

The Routing Service is configured by two lists:

• Network access numbers and function

• Fixed line service providers

Fig. 3: Routing Service

5.1 Network Access and Function List

The network access number contains the initial (1 to maximally 8) digits of the number to be dialled. If
these correspond to the initial digits of an out-bound call's number, the network function defines
whether the call is routed via the GSM network or the fixed line. A network access number may be up
to 8 digits long. A few examples follow:

GSM Fixed
Network Network
0170 0621
0172 0190
0178 0800
0179 0700

created: page: file:

2003-11-07 13 manual analog gateway 2.2en
Note Protection Mark according to DIN 34!
Manual coM.sat Analogue Gateway
Programming takes place as follows:

∗∗7ii∗nnnn∗FP∗AOC#

ii: Two-digit index in Network Access Number list

nn: Network Access Number (up to 8 digits)
F: Function (0..2)
P: Provider, if F=2 (entry from list of fixed line service providers)
AOC: Telephone charge pulse interval (0..240)

The Function F defines the path of the out-going-call:

Function F Meaning
0 the number is rejected
1 out-bound calls routed to GSM network
2 out-bound calls routed to fixed network

It is possible to block certain network access points for out-bound calls, e.g. 0190, 00, 09 etc. To do
this, '0' must be entered as the function value. The caller is issued a number-unobtainable tone after
dialling.

Provider sets the prefix of the desired fixed network provider as a Provider List entry number (see
below).

Examples:

**732*0170*10*10#

The list's entry number 32 receives the following definition: All calls with the prefix 0170 are routed to
the GSM network (F=1). A telephone charge pulse is generated every 10 seconds.

**701*00351*23#

The list's first entry receives the following definition: All calls to Portugal (prefix 00351) are routed to
the fixed network. The network service provider entered as number 3 in the Provider List is to be used.
No telephone charge pulses will be generated.

Entries are parsed sequentially, beginning with entry number 1.

It is therefore important to pay attention to the structure of the list when editing it.

correct incorrect
**731*0171123*10*10# **731*0171*10*10#
**732*0171*10*20# **732*0171123*10*20#
In this case the number 0171/1234567 is Here the parser right away finds a match to the
charged with a 10 second interval and all other dialled number 0171/1234567 in list entry 31 –
numbers beginning with 0171 are charged with a and assigns a 10 second telephone charge pulse.
20 second interval. The following entry is not executed!

Important note:
Telephone numbers that aren't found in the Routing List are routed via the fixed network without a pre-
selected service provider. This means, the standard fixed network operator you are connected to is
used.

5.2 The Provider List

The list may contain up to 9 entries. Provider may mean a certain network access or a prefix to the
dialled number. Each entry may contain u to 8 digits.

Example:

Input Sequence Index P Meaning

**750*01050# 1 Access using provider 01050
**751*01033# 2 Access using provider 01033
**752*0# 3 Subscriber line prefix
**753*0621# 4 area code as prefix
**754*0049# 5 country code prefix

5.3 Telephone Charge Pulse / Advice of Charge (AOC)

Telephone charge pulses are only generated for out-bound calls to the GSM mobile network.
Advice of charge is not provided for out-bound calls to the fixed network.

If the fixed network operator provides 12kHz or 16kHz charge pulses, these are transmitted unaltered.

6 Direct Dialling / Call Diversion

6.1 Direct Dialling with Trunk Line Type Installation
In this mode a predefined number is dialled after lifting the handset off-hook, or rather after loop
formation on the 2-wire line, and after a specified interval has passed.
This interval matches the dialling interval (see the Menu Table in appendix A). If no dialling or entry is
made during this time, a connection to the predefined number is established.

The predefined number is set in the programming mode. Direct dialling of this number can be toggled
on and off during normal operation of the device.

6.1.1 Setting the Target Number

The telephone number that is the target of said diversion can only be set when the device is in
programming mode by entering the following sequence:

**80*CallDiversionTargetPhoneNumber#

The target phone number may consist of up to 24 digits.

6.1.2 Deleting the Target Number

The call diversion target telephone number is deleted in the device's programming mode using the
following sequence:

**80*0000#

6.1.3 Activating Direct Dialling

Direct dialling may be activated during normal operation using following sequence:

**80*1#

6.1.4 Deactivating Direct Dialling

Direct dialling may be deactivated during normal operation using following sequence:

**80*0#

6.2 Direct Dialling in the Router Mode

Direct dialling in the Router Mode is the as in chapter 6.1.

The routing table decides in which network the call will be routed.

Note Protection Mark according to DIN 34!
Manual coM.sat Analogue Gateway

6.3 Call Diversion in the Router Mode

In the routing mode all in-bound calls from the fixed network are automatically diverted (re-routed) into
the GSM network.
For this purpose a phone number, to which calls are to be diverted to, is set in the programming mode.
Toggling diversion to this number on and off may then be done during normal operation of the device.

Two types of diversion may be applied to direct dialling:

6.3.1 Setting the Target Number

The telephone number that is the target of said diversion can only be set when the device is in
programming mode by entering the following sequence:

**81*CallDiversionTargetPhoneNumber#

The target phone number may consist of up to 24 digits.

6.3.2 Deleting the Target Number

The call diversion target telephone number is deleted in the device's programming mode using the
following sequence:

**81*0000#

6.3.3 Activating a Type 1 Call Diversion

The call originating from the fixed network call is accepted after the first ring signal, then the
programmed phone number in the GSM network is called. Telephone charges for the party calling
from the fixed network arise right away. The diversion may be activated during normal operation of the
device using the following sequence:

**81*1#

After input of this sequence the call diversion is active.

6.3.4 Activating a Type 2 Call Diversion

After the first ring signal the programmed phone number in the GSM network is called without
accepting the call from the fixed network.
Only if the GSM subscriber accepts the call, both parties become connected. This way charges for the
fixed network caller only arise if the call is accepted.
The diversion may be activated during normal operation of the device using the following sequence:

**81*2#

After input of this sequence the call diversion is active.

6.3.5 Deactivating the Call Diversion

Deactivation may also take place during normal operation by entering following sequence:

**81*0#

After input of this sequence the call diversion is off.

6.4 Testing Call Diversion and Direct Dialling

A call diversion in the router mode or direct dialling in the trunk line mode can be tested by inputting
the following sequence:

**82*1# testing the diversion with **80*….#

**82*2# testing the diversion with **81*….#

A call to the programmed phone number is now made. Hanging up the phone disconnects the parties
or discontinues the connection build-up.
If the call diversion or direct dialling isn't activated, the dialling tone is issued again after a short pause.
If no number to be diverted to or directly dialled is set, an error signal is issued, again followed by the
dialling tone.

6.5 Deactivating all diversions

Deactivation of all diversions is only in the normal operation possible by entering following sequence:

**82*1#

6.6 Flash to the office

In the routing mode during an active call to the office a flash time up to 250ms will be transferred.

7 The Calling Line Identification Presentation (CLIP) Feature

The coM.sat Analog Gateway can transmit the Calling line Identification Presentation originating from
the GSM network to CLIP-enabled terminal equipment. The transmission takes place between the first
and second ring signals, using an FSK modulation. This procedure complies with the ETS 300-659-1
standard.
The handoff of CLIP can only be activated from within the programming mode (see appendix A 'Menu
Table').

8 PC-Data and PC-FAX

Via the two-wire line the coM.sat Analogue Gateway can only transmit voice calls. Data and or FAX
can be transmitted using the PC. For this purpose the PC is connected to the coM.sat Analogue
Gateway via it's serial (V.24/RS232) interface.
The device automatically detects an active serial port by analysing the DTR (Data Terminal Ready)
signal. It automatically disconnects any active call, deactivates the two-wire line and activates the PC-
Direct mode.
This mode is indicated by alternately flashing green and yellow LEDs.
Having created a direct connection, it is possible to establish a data link, send and receive FAX using
appropriate software installed on the PC. The application of such software shall not be discussed in
this document.

The fax or data link is disconnected by deactivating the DTR signal or removing the serial
cable. Following the disconnect the device will restart itself.

9 Remote Servicing
A correctly installed coM.sat Analogue Gateway that is logged into a GSM network can be serviced
from a distance. It is possible to dial into the device to be serviced from an external place. It's
configuration can be changed after dial-up. Please notice that in order to communicate with the device
after dial-up, the external terminal equipment must be able to send DTMF signals. The external caller's
number is compared to the service number stored within the installation menu. Only if such a number
has been set and only if the comparison yields identical numbers is it possible to remote service the
device.

9.1 Setting the Service Number

The input sequence '**62*ServicePhoneNumber#' sets the Service telephone number.

Important:
The format that the network operator outputs must be known. If the operator transmits for instance
'+4962171481418', and the service number '062171481418' has been stored in the device, the
calling number is not recognised as valid.

Solution:
If one isn't sure of the mobile phone network operator's number format, then in this example the
following phone number should be input as the remote service phone number:
'4962171481418'. Since the comparison begins with the last number, the phone number is
recognised up to it's first digit (in this example '4').

Attention: the numbers used above are merely examples!

9.2 Deleting the Service Number

The input sequence '**62*0000#' deletes the Service telephone number.

9.3 Changing the Configuration

When the remote service calls the coM.sat Analogue Gateway, the call is automatically accepted after
validating the phone number and the service caller is issued an 'internal attention tone'. The caller can
now make changes to the configuration (see the chapter ‘Changing the Set up’).
If no input is made within 20 seconds, and the device is in trunk line mode, the terminal equipment
connected to the device is called. If the device is operated as an extension, the service caller receives
the PABX internal tone (providing no automatic direct dial-in has been set).

Important note:
It is not possible to change the PIN, delete the complete configuration information or to test the
signal quality in a remote service session.

10 Signal Quality
A correctly installed coM.sat Analogue Gateway that is logged into a GSM network can report the size
of the field strength. This can be of importance, if it is operated in an area with poor GSM service
coverage or if it has been installed in an unfavourable location. The reception field strength can be
transmitted in two different ways. Either via the serial interface of a connected PC or by sending an
SMS to an external receiver. It is recommended to use the PC method during installation of the
device, to guarantee that a sufficient field strength is available at the device's or it's antenna's place of
installation. The SMS method can be recommended for the monitoring of the installation location. In
this case a SMS is sent when the signal quality falls below the defined threshold twice in a row.
The SMS sent only once, even if the signal strength continues to fluctuate below the threshold. Only
when the threshold has been passed once again in the upward direction, is a new SMS sent when the
levels fall below the threshold anew.

10.1 Monitoring Signal Quality with the PC

To measure the level of the signal quality, a PC is connected to the device by the serial interface. The
serial interface is set to the 'Trace Mode' in the device (see appendix A, 'Menu Table'). A terminal
program is invoked on the PC and the user must set up the serial interface as follows:

19200 Baud; 8N1

Then the input sequence '**33#' is entered using the key pad of the telephone connected to the
coM.sat Analogue Gateway.
This leads to an output similar to the following on the PC's monitor:

AT+COPS?

+COPS: 0,0,'Vodafone D2'

OK

---------------------------------------

Signal strength: -71dBm

---------------------------------------
AT+CSQ

+CSQ: 26,99

OK

The following table rates the levels of signal quality:

level (-dBm) quality

51-60 very good
61-70 good
71-80 satisfactory
81-90 sufficient
91-99 poor

The place of installation or the location of the antenna should be scrutinised if the signal strength is
lower than -80 dB, in order to find a solution that guarantees a good connection at any time.

10.2 Monitoring Signal Quality via SMS

If the monitoring of the signal field strength should take place during normal operation, sending an
SMS when the level threshold is under-run provides a solution. A telephone number that can receive
SMS in such a case must be stored in the device for this purpose.
The format of the text sent looks like this, for example:

'Signal level too low (-69dBm)'

10.2.1 Setting the SMS Phone Number

The telephone number that is to receive the SMS is set with the input sequence

'**64*PhoneNumberToReceiveSMS#'

10.2.2 Deleting the SMS Phone Number

The programmed SMS phone number is deleted with the input sequence

'**64*0000#'.

10.2.3 SMS Service Centre Number

In order to send an SMS, a service centre number (SC number) is required.
The SC number of the mobile phone network operator is set with the input sequence

'**65*SC-NumberOfGSM-NetOperator#'.

10.2.4 Deleting the SMS Service Centre Number

The programmed SMS Service Centre number is deleted with the input sequence

'**65*0000#'.

11 Notes Regarding Installation

The length of the telephone cable should not exceed 100m. Should longer cables be necessary, the
use of shielded cables is recommended to prevent the influence of stray radiation.

The antenna cable must have a line resistance of 50 Ohm and the length of the cable to the GSM
antenna should be as short as possible.
A small magnet-base antenna with 3dB gain is sufficient for areas with good GSM coverage. In areas
with poor service it is advisable to use a directional aerial with about 8dB gain.

When using more than one coM.sat Analogue Gateways the antennas must be installed outside of at
least 1 metre's distance from one another.

Special directional couplers (power splitter) may greatly reduce the number of necessary antennas.
Four coM.sat Analogue Gateways may for instance be operated on a single directional aerial (4-way
coupler).

Information regarding the location of the nearest base station and service area coverage is obtainable
from the relevant GSM network operators.

Due to the useful radiation (stray radiation regarding other electronic devices) of the GSM
network it is advisable to keep at least 1 metre distance between the GSM antenna and
electronic equipment.
