Original Lesson Plan

Science-Magnet
First Grade
Standards: S1P2: Students will demonstrate effects of magnets on other magnets and other
objects.
a. Demonstrate how magnets attract and repel.
b. Identify common objects that are attracted to a magnet.
c. Identify objects and materials (air, water, wood, paper, your hand, etc.) that do not block
magnetic force.
Learning Target: Students will understand how magnets attract and repel other
objects.
Students will understand/recognize which objects and materials block magnetic
force.

-Use KWL chart to discuss what students already know about magnets. Ask students what
pictures or objects are on the refrigerator door in their home.
-Have each student share what is “stuck” to their home’s refrigerator door. Ask how the
magnets keep the papers or photos stuck to the refrigerator door.
-Read science book pages 178-179 about how magnets can help with recycling.
Review pages 182-183.
-Magnetic walk-if time permits, students will be given a magnet and must find at least 5
things that are magnetic in the room (or pod if parent volunteer is available) and 5 items
that are not magnetic. Make sure to have a discussion about not going neat certain
items-ex computer. Students will record their findings.
-Students will experiment to explore the strengths of different magnets. First, they
will place a paperclip under a sheet of paper. They will try to pick up the paper clip
through the paper. They will experiment with different magnets.
-Next, they will bring a paper clip close to each of the magnets. The magnets will
grab the clip at a given distance. They will try it again with several different
magnets. Use the recording sheet (page 24 flash drive) to record the distances at
which each magnet grabbed the paper clip. If time permits, they can sequence their
magnets from strongest to weakest.
Summarizing-H ave students write one thing they learned today and share with a
partner.

Remediations - work with partner, write words instead of whole sentences
Extensions - write 3 facts, write predictions about magnets.

save activity for another day.

-Students use the app Pi and Power Pals Magnet fishing. In the game students will fish with
a magnet to collect the items that have iron or steel in them.
