The HVPD Kronos™ Monitor –
Automatic Calibration Pulse Injection and Detection

The Kronos™ integrated pulse generator injects calibration signals into the HV cable to calculate the asset’s pulse
propagation retention factor (PPRF).
The PPRF approximates the amplitude of PD at its origin, based on the amplitude of the propagated pulse captured by
the local OLPD sensor remote from the originating event.

• Automatic Calibration Pulse Injection and

Detection pulses are injected and then
detected via non-intrusive HFCT
sensors, preferably mounted at the cable
terminations.

• This pulse and its cable reflection

characteristics are processed by the
system to calculate the PPRF.

• This process is a key part of the system

setup. Further periodic pulse injections
will be made manually or automatically to
ensure correct system function and
maintain calibration.

• At the time of pulse injection, the system

pauses the PD monitoring, and PD
monitoring resumes once pulse
injections have completed.

OLPD Criticality Trend Automated Alarms vs. Flags & Trend

• HVPD do not provide automated alarms but provide ‘flags’, raised from condition states or
trends for further engineer investigation.
• These ‘flags’ can signal an increase in PD Level or OLPD Activity but can also be caused
as a result of network switching.
• Each ‘flag’ is investigated by HVPD engineers before a decision is made regarding
preventative maintenance interventions.
• The example below illustrates a total lead time to failure of 195 days for a paper insulated
cable.

Major concern

Some concern

Increase within
acceptable limits
90-day monitoring training period

• The data is analysed on a daily basis with the previous 24 hours

of data compared against the present 24 hours of data
• At the end of the training period, the background noise level
thresholds and software filter settings are adjusted
• This approach helps to avoid ‘false alarms’ being accidentally
triggered by noise spikes and HV network switching

Conclusions

• Uniquely in the market, HVPD are providing a dedicated, continuous OLPD

condition monitoring service in conjunction with the monitoring technology
and HVPD OLPD Measurements Database© 2015, to provide continuous
condition monitoring to support Condition-Based Management (CBM).

• The system provides real-time, condition monitoring of the HV and MV

networks through a simple-to-use, user interface with all condition data
superimposed onto a bespoke single line diagram (SLD) of the networks
with simple, colour-coded condition criticality assessment.

• By installing continuous on-line partial discharge (OLPD) monitoring
