The Benefits of Joining Extracurricular Activity for High School Students

I have an experience in joining an extracurricular when I was in senior high school. I was a
member of the student council. In three years being a student council member, it gave me benefits.
Student council taught me how to manage time, building my confidence, and also improving my
academic performance at school. One time, I was an event division on my school’s anniversary.
At that time, I was responsible so that the event runs well. I have to communicate with other
division and teachers well. My time management and mental were very trained. I was happy
became a part of the student council because I got many benefits for myself even though I have to
spend pretty much of my time on that
Requiring students to participate in an extracurricular activity is quite difficult even just for
one activity. The problem arises because the activities are not what they are interested in or if they
join, they will spend a lot of time at the school outside the lesson hours. Nowadays, many students
do not want to join extracurricular activities but instead, use their time by playing games and doing
something that is not useful for them. Although joining extracurricular activities increases the
hours of students in school, there are many benefits to improve their self-skills.
The reasons why students do not want to participate in extracurricular activities is first, the
obligation to take extracurricular activities make them get stressed out and could lead to
depression. They have less time to be with their family and friends that might make them distance
themselves from their loved ones which might be causing more stress because taking
extracurricular activities will spend all their time in school. School provides many extracurricular
activities and students can take one or more activities that they are interested in. The cause to
become stressed out is they do not enjoy the activities because they are forced by the school and
not because of the time. Joining extracurricular activities is one of the ways to reduce boredom
from schoolwork. The extracurricular activities give many benefits for students such as improving
their academic performance, higher self-esteem and else. In extracurricular activities, students will
do something different outside the classroom because they do not tend to listen to the teacher’s
explaining of the lesson all the time which make them get bored. Students can play something that
they like such as soccer, violin, basketball and else which make them happy and reduce boredom
from the classroom.
The second reason is students will get tired and have no time to study and their learning is
affected. Spending time all day in school make students feel tired and cannot do the schoolwork
when they came home. If this continues, it will make their learning in school is bothered. This
problem can be avoided by giving the limit time for every extracurricular activity so students will
not spend a lot of time in school and can take a rest to do their schoolwork. Participating in
extracurricular activities is one of the ways to practice time management because it is the key to
be a success. This is also one of the benefits joining extracurricular activities. Reddy (2016) states
that participate in the extracurricular activities make students learn how and when they have to
prioritize things. The time management makes students be able to work on important things first
efficiently. By taking extracurricular activities can be the best practice for students that enable
them to manage time effectively.
The last reason is the extracurricular activities come along with its own expenses for buying
the necessary equipment. Joining extracurricular activities sometimes make students spend money
for the cost the instrument, uniform and other equipment depend on what activity that they join.
The students definitely will not pay with their own money but ask their parents to pay and it is
quite burdensome for parents. The school makes extracurricular activity is mandatory and it will
provide anything regarding the activity’s needs including provides money for the necessary things.
The extracurricular activity has another benefit that is personal growth and development for
students. Reddy (2016) mentions that the point of this is to make the students learn to share and
caring with peers. The value of students participate in extracurricular activities is to make them
have a better personality by involving in groups and learn how to care and share with their friends.
Participating in extracurricular activities do not always spend much money on that. Expenses for
the necessary things only if the students take part in an event that does cost more for equipment If
there is a thing about cost issue, school and parents can negotiate to find the best way.
Policy to oblige students to join at least one extracurricular activity has become a controversy.
There are many advantages but it also has some disadvantage. Students will improve their
academic performance, learn in time management and else. In contrast, they also will spend a lot
of their time and spend money on buying the necessary equipment. If the problem is about the time
and the cost for the activity, it can be negotiated with the student’s parents or the school will bear
the expense of the extracurricular activities’ needs.
