2 3.1 OBJECTIVE
3 1. To determine the firewater demand for helideck fire protection.
4
5 2. To determine the quantity of 3% AFFF foam concentrate required for helideck fire protection.
6
7 3. To determine the quantity of 3% AFFF foam concentrate required for jet fuel storage tank
8 diked area protection.

12 3.2 DESIGN BASIS AND ASSUMPTIONS
13 1. For helideck fire fighting:- B

14 Foam monitor and hosereel for helideck fire fighting purpose shall be designed in accordance to
15 NFPA 418 and ICAO Annex 14 Vol II. Reference is also made to Chevron Fire Protection
16 Manual -1600 Firewater System and Fire Fighting Equipment and 3100 - Offshore Producing and
17 Drilling Facilities. For helideck fire fighting, both foam monitor and hosereel will be simultaneously
18 operated.
19
20 Minimun application rate for AFFF foam solution: 0.1 gpm/ft² of helideck area [NFPA 418,
21 Table 3.6.1]; Minimun duration: 5mins [NFPA 418,§ 3.6.2]
22
23 2. For jet fuel storage tank diked area protection:- B

24 Minimun application rate for AFFF foam solution: 0.3 gpm/ft² of diked area [NFPA 15, § 7.3.3] ;
25 Minimun duration : 20mins [NFPA 11,Table 5.7.3.2]
26
27
28 3.3 CALCULATIONS
29
30 1. Estimation of theoretical firewater demand for helideck fire protection
31
32 Deck Dimension, L = 55 ft
33 Deck Area, L² = 3025 ft²
34 NFPA 418 application rate = 0.1 gpm/ft² of helideck area
35 Firewater demand = 303 gpm
36
37 Using a 350gpm foam monitor [as per Chevron Fire Protection Manual Specification]
38 Foam monitor discharge rate = 350 gpm (with simultaneous operation of
39 Foam hosereel discharge rate = 95 gpm monitor and hosereel)
40 Design margin (Note 1) = 15% B

41 Maximum firewater demand = 512 gpm B

42
43 Note 1
44 Design margin for hydraulic imbalances = 15%

2 2. Estimation of foam concentrate required for helideck fire protection

3
4 Foam solution application rate = 512 gpm B

5 Application duration = 5 mins

6 AFFF Foam solution required = 2560 gal
7 AFFF Foam concentration = 3%
8 Foam concentrate required = 77 gal B

9
10 In line to other facilities in Gulf of Thailand, 100gal of foam concentrate storage shall be provided for
11 helideck fire protection.
12
13 NOTE: Capacity calculation is meant for 1 foam concentrate tank located on one side of the helideck
14 only. Another foam concentrate tank of same capacity with its associated foam monitors and
15 hosereel will be installed on the opposite side of the helideck.
16
17
18 3. Estimation of AFFF foam concentrate required for jet fuel storage tank diked area protection
19
20 Jetfuel Storage Tanks Diked Area = 267 ft² (Based on plot plan dimensions)
21 Application rate = 0.3 gpm/ft² of diked area
22 Firewater demand = 81 gpm
23 Design margin for hydraulic imbalances = 15% B

24 Total firewater demand = 94 gpm B

25 Application duration = 20 mins

26 AFFF Foam solution required = 1880 gal
27 AFFF Foam concentration = 3% B

28 Foam concentrate required = 57 gal

29
30 Following Chevron's Fire Protection Manual 1600/ 3100, a 60 gallon foam concentrate storage shall
31 be provided for fixed foam system.
