Many of the clinicians supported the idea that having five groups was not helpful and that

three would
be enough. The word ‘pathogenic’ here was not helpful and some laboratories talk of ‘clinically
actionable’ rather than ‘pathogenic’. It was generally thought that the clinical report ought to explain
the results and required actions in standard terms. However, as a counter to this, clinical scientists
noted that the five classes were helpful in signifying the degree of certainty that could or should be
attached to the result.

Depending on the clinical decisions that may be made on the basis of such results, this expressed level
of uncertainty could be critical.
