Taj Company - Introduction

A Public Limited Company was incorporated in Lahore under the Companies’ Act (1913) on May 14, 1929
known as Taj Company. Taj Company started with a small capital but in very short time it covered big
distance, it was due to the fact people were looking forward to have a brand that they could trust for
Authenticity and Quality of The Holy Quran. Taj Company identified this big space and came into the field
of Printing and Publishing of The Holy Quran.

Before Pakistan – India partition (1947), Taj Company had their landmark office Taj Office Mumbai and
Quran Manzil Dehli. Muslim states specially demanded and recited Taj Company’s printed Holy Quran.
The company was recognized internationally for printing and publishing for the Holy Quran. Company not
only printed The Holy Quran inside the country, but also used supply chain from other countries such as
Germany, Italy and Holland and made very fine printings which are still available in Taj Company’s
personal library.

After partition Taj Company moved to Pakistan, and established its first showroom at Bander Road,
Karachi and then acquired Land at Mangopir Road, Karachi and installed most advanced printing machine
available by then. For years, Taj Company did not let any other publishing house to compete in the
publishing of The Holy Quran.

The founder of the company Sheikh Inayatullah died in December 1982. After his death it did not looked
good for the company as it faced a scandal which led to Financial crisis which compelled the government
to liquidate the company in 1990. Government decided to close the case and made a liquidation board,
which sold all Name, artistic work, calligraphies of the Holy Quran and all available stock to Mr. Abdul
Basit in 2004 as a private limited company.

Print media highlighted the scandal very much, which created distrust among people and market. This did
not give good feeling to Mr. Abdul Basit, and he sold Taj Company to Taj Kutub Khana, Peshawar in 2007.

This Taj Kutab Khana was a well-known organization which had a great work in Pashto and Persian. The
founder of Taj Kutub Khana was Dr. Muhammad Din (1952-2003) who was a well-known religious scholar
with a PhD in Islamic Studies and wrote over sixty books, of which many were awarded. His translation
and interpretation of The Holy Quran was named “Taleem-ul-Quran”. He knew what Taj company was,
and what it should be; so he trained his children in the field of publishing. Mr. Zia Uddin CEO of Taj Kutub
Khana (son of Dr. Muhammad Din) acquired Taj Company along with his brothers being directors in 2007.
Industry

For years Taj Company did not let any other publishing house to compete in the publishing of The Holy
Quran. But after the crisis and of almost absence of 8 years from this market, it led a gap for new
publishers to enter this market. In 1991, Lahore High Court assigned Nazar Khan as an Administrator of
Taj Company. He instantly started managing the work and Taj Company was once again printing The Holy
Quran with full pace. Nazar Khan did a remarkable job in his 13 years in company.

At that time market had many publishers of The Holy Quran (Zia ul Quran, Hafiz, Qudrat ullah, etc).
International market was also disturbed for several years for not getting supply for years. Also Shah Fahad
Quran Printing Complex also started printing The Holy Quran in 1993, before that time Taj Company was
the only one whose printed Quran was supplied to Haramain, Saudia Arabia.

Scandal/Financial Crisis

Taj company was known as printing and publishing Quran company. Crises begins in Karachi, when the
company was in need of financial help so they decided to make scheme for general public as it was a
public limited company. They came up with an attractive proposition for people to invest by offering
exorbitant rate of interest i.e. 7% which was not common at that time. For few months they pay the dues
from the funds generated. Instead of nabbing the culprits, government started their campaign warning
public through newspaper advertisement; as soon as this campaign begins culprits flee the country. Many
people invest in it with the thought that they will keep themselves save from the riba plus they couldn’t
expect to get swindle by the company who is doing noble business of printing and publishing Quran.
