Self-Evaluation Paper Informative Speech

Audience Connection
Pathos: I hope I connected with the audience at the beginning by starting out with
the relatable reasons why people go to the gym. I hope also they could feel my passion
by my stories about my the gym and by my knowledge on it and could tell how involved
in the topic I was. I think if I prepared and went over the speech more I could have had
a better flow to it with less nervous stutters.
Logos: I tried to prove logos throughout my presentation by my visual aid. I had
three pictures in total explaining the process. The two at the bottom showing correct and
form and then incorrect form and then one large one at the top showing correct form
and then arrows to accompany. The arrows showed the direction of force and went right
along with what I was saying.
Ethos: I think my personal application of leg drive, my stories with it, and then my
overall knowledge of the gym helped prove my personal credibility. I also think my
appearance and slightly tight shirt helped portray that I am invested in health and fitness
and do actually practice what I preach.

Organizational Pattern
My introduction was rough. I did not practice my speech even once, I figured that
I knew the topic well enough and our class was scary so I could just wing it and that's
exactly what I did. I should have at least rehearsed a opening and closing line. My intro
was rocky but I think it got much smoother when I got to telling my personal stories
because that's something I can easily tell because I lived it and I know it completely. My
last story helped transition into my poster and I think i did initially a good job at
explaining the poster but may have dragged on the explanation of the proper form
section. My conclusion was slightly abrupt but did hit my main points and I left it all with
a solid final line in my opinion, “Remember, when its chest day, bring your legs.”

Citations and Claims

I had three citations and 3 quotes to go along with them. I was prepared and
wrote all the down with their authors on note cards and brought them up with me, but
only remembered to use 2 of them. I think i should have used the third to help smoothly
explain the science behind the leg drive motion. On the first citation I gave with the
quote I backed up the author by telling the class that he was a professional strength
coach but for the second one I didn't give him any credibility. If I did it would have
helped the points feels more cement and firm.

Visual Aid
My visual aid I think was a strong suit of my speech. It looked professional with
the solid black border, simple text, and large pictures. As I explained earlier, I had 3
pictures in total. They were arranged in a triangle with the bottom two being slightly
smaller and being a comparison. Comparing what it looked like to be using and not to
be using leg drive. I pointed and explained the details and differences between the two
as I spoke. My top pictures was the largest and plainly showed the leg drive motion with
big red arrows in the directions of force. These arrows may have seemed out of place
but as I explained the direction of force and used Newton's 3rd law, I believe it helped
make sense and get the point across I was trying to make with the image.

Appearance
My appearance was a buttoned up, maroon with little white polka dots dress shirt
with no tie and the top button undone giving a slightly casual look. My shirt was tucked
into black slacks and I had on maroon dress shoes to match the shirt. I think my style
was fresh and well put together while not looking over the top formal. My shirt was a few
years old and I haven't worn it in at least a year and I remembered it being slightly
baggy, but that was before I got into weight lifting. Now the shirt is tight and showes my
progress. I wore this shirt not to look like a conceded meat head but to show my
progress because I am extremely proud of it and I think it gave me a look of expertise in
the field.

Delivery
I kept my note cards in my left hand the entire time and rarely looked at them, I
think I should have when I started to nervously stutter to help gather my thoughts. I
moved around a little but but stayed within the same 2x2 foot square the whole time, I
wish I had used more of the stage. I did however use gestures, but they stayed at the
same hip level the whole time and were the same two handed point and swirl. I had a
few nervous mannerisms with my uh and ahs. I also used my full body when trying to
explain how to actually use leg drive by pressing my arms in the press motion and
getting up on my toes when explaining where your feet go. The one thing I would want
to work on the most is my stutter. I start to stutter when I get nervous, it's subtle I know
but it really get in my head and makes me more nervous because then I think I look like
a fool. One thing I will pride myself on is eye contact, I looked all around the room and
was always talking to someone, and switched up the person all the while.
Strengths
My appearance and visual aid were my strengths. The actual meat of the speech
and what I had to say would be next, and then at the bottom would be the actual
delivery. I am proud of how I carried myself when I was up there while being extremely
nervous and the poster was clean and well put together to illustrate my points. I was
also honestly quite proud of my color coordination of the shirt and shoes.

Anxiety Levels and Management

Informative Speech 7 or 8 4 or 5

The first time I watched my speech was probably a week after I gave it because I
was scared to see how terrible i had done. I am proud to say that I surprised myself. I
actually sounded like I knew what i was talking about. I didn't have as red of a face as I
thought I did. I could hardly even see my shaking hands. I was freaking out before I got
up there to deliver my speech but after watching it a few times and seeing me actually
get up there and do it, I have some new found confidence. I review my speech now
positively and can look at what I did right and it no longer feels like a total failure. I am
very glad we film our speeches in this class because this has given me a ton of
confidence for our next speeches.
