Conscription Acts

By. Jack, William, Ben, Coleman, Trey

What Did the Conscription Acts Say?
All healthy white men between the ages of 18 and 35 were liable for a
three-year term of service in the Confederate Army. All soldiers
already in the army for one-year terms now had their length of
enlistment extended to three years. In September of 1862, the upper
age limit raised to 45. The age limits expanded to the age range
between 17 and 50 in February of 1864.
When were the first Confederate Conscription Acts?

In April of 1862, the first Confederate Conscription Acts was ratified by

the Confederate Congress. Over 300,000 Men were drafted due to the
Conscription acts for both the Union and Confederate Army. This
brought the total amount of soldiers from Alabama to 120,000
soldiers.

Who was affected by the Conscription Acts?

Any man from the age of 20-45 had to register for the draft. This
included people from other countries that planned on becoming a
U.S. citizen before April 1st of 1862. Women were not allowed to
register for the draft, but many women fought in the war anyway
under a male disguise.

How Many Men from Alabama Died in the Civil War?

Alabama had nearly 120,000 served in the Confederate Army. Nearly

35,000 of these men died serving and another 30,000 were seriously
wounded. 15% of these men died from disease and 10% from their
battle wounds.
How did the Conscription Acts affect later wars?

In later wars the age was lowered to 18 for the draft. The draft was
used again in the Vietnam war. Once again protests broke out and
people were outraged that they didn’t have a choice about going to
war. The draft can still be used today if needed.
