1 SCOPE
This specification covers the minimum requirements to identification of piping materials (Pipe,
Fittings, Flanges, Bolts & Nuts, Gaskets, Plates, and Valves) by color coding and/or marking
(stamping, stenciling, pressing, cast molding, etc) for NSRP Complex Project.
Color coding and marking in this specification are intended to supplement, not replace, normal
identification required by ANSI, ASME, ASTM, MSS or other codes and specifications.
Color coding on galvanized materials is not required.
Purchaser’s approvals required in this specification shall be obtained before order placement.
1.2 Marking
Marking shall be carried out by Vendor at his factory. Refer to Para.4 of this specification for the
details.

2 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Color coding and marking shall not be easily erasable, and shall be clearly indicated.
The quality of paint/ink shall have a life of not less than one year in unheated storage under cover
without loss of any identification. Paint/ink shall be resistant to salt water atmosphere, tropical
climate or similar attack, and be durable and of a distinctive identifying color. They shall not cause
corrosion of the materials to which it is applied through storage, construction and operation.
Paint/ink containing cadmium, chromium, lead, coal-tar or other harmful substances are not
acceptable. Paint/ink containing zinc are not acceptable for stainless steel materials. There shall be
no chemical or physical reaction between paint/ink and protective coating used.
3 COLOR CODING
3.1 General Requirements
Color coding shall be performed after application of surface rust prevention as required in the
relevant specifications.
Color coding shall be performed in accordance with the original material description on purchase
orders, if material alternative is approved by Purchaser for a specific purchase order item. For
example:
Color coding showing “ASTM A106 Gr.B for Non-Sour Service“ shall be applied for a specific
purchase order item, if “ASTM A106 Gr.B for Moderate wet H2S Service” instead of “ASTM
A106 Gr.B for Non-Sour Service” is approved and supplied for the specific purchase order
items.
3.2 Colors
Colors shall be selected from the British Standard 381-C “Colors for Specific Purposes”, RAL colors
or Munsell colors. Refer to Table-2.

3.4.5 Stud bolt sets (one stud bolt with two nuts)
One of the heads (opposite side of the stamped head) of stud bolts and both nuts shall be color
coded.
3.4.8 Plates
Plates shall be color coded in accordance with Table-1 and Figure-1.

4 MARKING
4.1 General Requirements
The requirements of marking and its methods shall be in accordance with the individual applicable
codes, standards and specifications. MSS-SP25 is a mandatory requirement to Valves, Fittings,
Flanges, and Unions.
PMI verified materials shall be marked in accordance with 3550-8440-SP-0028.
4.1.1 The method shall be either low-stress stamping, dot-stamping, stenciling, pressing, or cast molding
as per applicable code, standard, and requisition; with the following limitations:
Low-stress stamping shall be round nosed with a radius of 0.25 mm minimum.
If it is physically impossible to apply the specified marking method such as stenciling etc. because of
limited room, durable and securely affixed stainless steel tag plate is acceptable subject to
Purchaser’s approval.
4.1.2 The minimum wall thickness shall be maintained after any marking.
Note (*1): This information shall be marked when it is designated in the Purchaser’s material
description on purchase orders.
Note (*2): Wall thickness indication on documents, tags, and products shall be same as those
written in purchase orders. For example:

is equal.
If “12.7mm” is written in a purchase order, the thickness indication shall be
“12.7mm”. “0.5inch” instead of “12.7mm” is not acceptable even though the
thickness value is equal.
4.2 Valves
All valves shall have stainless steel tag plate securely attached directly on the body. Purchaser’s PJ
Symbol shall be indicated on the tag plate by stamping. Tag plates not attached directly on body,
e.g. using stainless steel wire/ chain, are not acceptable unless approved by Purchaser. Galvanized
or other plated wire is not acceptable to prevent contamination in any case.
Vendor shall categorize each outlet (weldolet, sockolet, and threadolet) into his standard range, or
tailor made if necessary. Vendor standard range of weldolets shall have branch size, run size range,
branch WT, and run WT. Vendor standard range of sockolets and threadolets shall have branch
size, run size range, and rating.
NPS1-1/2 and smaller weldolets shall have vendor standard marking on products like "3/4 x14-36
XS/STD" only. However, a tag shall be tied to each weldolet with stainless steel wire. The tag tied to
each weldolet shall have branch size, run size, branch WT, and run WT identified by purchase

orders, as a minimum. Galvanized or other plated wire is not acceptable to prevent contamination.
In addition, these weldolets shall be packed in bags per every branch size, run size, branch WT, and
run WT identified by purchase orders. All bags shall have a label reporting branch size, run size,
branch WT, and run WT identified by purchase orders plus item number, Purchaser’s PJ symbol
mentioned in purchase orders. If a weldolet does not fall into any of vendor standard range, then
vendor proceeds with a "tailor made" product with marking as per purchase order. This is common
for all sizes.
4.3.3 Nipples
Nipples shall have the marking of ASTM material designation and grade, Nominal Size, Wall
Thickness, Length and Purchaser’s PJ Symbol as a minimum.
4.5 Plates
Plates shall have the marking of ASTM material designation and grade, Nominal Size, Thickness
and Purchaser’s PJ Symbol as a minimum.
