Delivery of Instruction – Teaching Methods
Breakdown of points:
Methods of Instruction: Review the 8 methods of instruction in textbook and from the handout,
“Methods of Teaching in the Classroom.” From Textbook: School: An Introduction to Education,
Ch 2, pp. 36 – 45
Guidelines:
1. Students may work together but hand in separate assignments. Type out
answers on a Word document and e-mail to teacher. Each student needs to write their
own paper, although they will be collaborating in their discussion. Papers will NOT be
identical.
2. Watch ALL videos again, and take notes about each one. Teacher will collect
notes – all 8 methods should be listed but do not need separate notes when
working with a partner.
1. Direct Instruction
In this video, the teacher was required to display how the students do an assignment; thus, it
displays direct instruction.
3. Lecture
In this video, the teacher directly like direct instruction, but it lacks the sharing of interactions
between the two.
5. Discussion
In this video, the students engage in a discussion with the teachers. This allows for the transfer of
ideas and allows them to reach an educated conclusion.
6. Mental Modeling
In this video, they assist the student in evaluating every step of the problem by breaking it down
into an easier- based problem. This closely resembles human thought.
7. Discovery-based learning
In this video, students are very independent in their own learning. They are only guided by the
teacher to direct it to the class focus.
8. Inquiry Learning
In this video, it is almost-like discovery learning. However, it mainly focuses on the the student
guiding themself versus the teacher guiding them.
3. Select two videos that strikes you as particularly interesting, unique, challenging,
and write a short reflections about this. Answer the questions below in your reflection
1) Name and describe the 2 methods that you would feel the most
comfortable utilizing in our own classroom?
2) In what ways can using these teaching methods benefit your students?
Name 3 ways
3) Is there a teaching strategy that you would not want to use or are
uncomfortable using at this time? Which one? Why not?
1. In my opinion, I believe that utilizing the teaching methods of discussion and discovery learning
would be the simplest and effective way to teach my classroom.
2. Both of these methods allow students to benefit by having an active role in the class. To go more
into detail, both require students to pay a little more attention than what lecturing or direct
instruction allowing students to maybe learn a little better than other methods could potentially
offer. Also, students are more involved due to the fact that both methods require the functioning
role of a single student and allow students to become more independent in their learning due to
the fact discussion could be between other students (the teacher would just make sure students are
staying on-task and maybe add more to the thought process). Lastly, I believe that these two
methods will benefit the students by utilizing what they have learned and it would be easier to
relate their learning to real life situations.
3. As of right now, I wouldn’t feel very comfortable using mental modeling. Although it doesn’t
seem too difficult, I don’t think I have the proper experience to utilize it correctly with little to no
errors. Also, I feel like it may be the hardest for students to replicate or follow which would be
hard for me personally to know if the students are actually learning and understanding.
