THE STUDENTS WHO ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

Adviser: Miguel H. Panugan Jr.

This qualitative phenomenological research aimed to know the reasons of

the students that triggers them to attempt suicide, and since it is a failed attempt
to kill one’s own life we also want to know what their realizations after the suicide
attempt.
In-depth interview was done to gather the needed data and the study
revealed that the participants which are the students have various experiences
and by that, they have similarities and differences regarding about their reasons
that lead them to attempt suicide. The results revealed that the main reasons on
why the students attempted suicide is because they perceived that it is the only
solution to their problems, as such receiving painful words also triggered a
student to attempt suicide. After the said act, students have realized that what
they have done was really a mistake and they have regretted that they intend to
kill their own life.
Further attempting suicide is the way of the students to escape from their
problems in life, they are feeling hopeless and despair and as supported by the
theory of cognitive behavioral model proposed by Beck and his colleagues, they
stated that hopelessness also plays a key role on why an individual would
attempt suicide, along with negative triad of negative thought of oneself, others,
and in the future.
Since there are only a few researchers who study this kind of topic, we
expect that there would be more researchers to study this kind of phenomena.
Furthermore, future studies need to consider the importance of strict and
consistent definition criteria for a serious suicide attempt to improve research
strategies, assessment, and preventive efforts. Regardless, of the limited scope
of research and the availability of data, future researchers should consult health
care professionals upon conducting this kind of study.
CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Suicidal thoughts and

nonfatal suicide attempts

warrant attention (Nock,

2018).

Young adulthood is the stage wherein individuals alter from being

dependent to independent mortals. As such, this quote relates to our study

because through their journey they will be facing plenty of struggles in which

young adults are vulnerable to suicidal thoughts and attempting suicide. Further,

youth who attempted suicide is increasing as well as it is said to be a growing

problem around the world according to the World Health Organization (WHO,

2018). Hence, it requires our attention.

Background of the Study

Suicide is the act of taking one's own life on purpose. Moreover, suicidal

behavior is a global cause of death and disability. Worldwide, suicide is the

fifteenth leading cause of death, accounting for 1.4% of all deaths based on

World Health Organization (WHO, 2014). In total, more than 800,000 people die

by suicide each year. The annual global age-standardized death rate for 2012 is

estimated to be 11.4 per 100,000, and the World Health Organization (WHO)

projects this rate to remain steady through 2030 (WHO, 2014).

Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Presented in this chapter is the literature review conducted on the

students who attempted suicide. This included information found in the article,

journals, books, etc. This chapter thus deals with the search for and review of

literature relevant to the research topic.

Suicide Attempt

Suicide is a particularly awful way to die: the psychological enduring

paving the way to it is typically delayed, exceptional, and unpalliated. There is no

morphine proportionate to facilitate the intense torment, and demise not

extraordinarily is rough and shocking. The enduring of the self-destructive is

private and inconceivable, leaving relatives, companions, and partners to

manage a practically impossible sort of misfortune, just as for blame. Suicide

conveys in its fallout a dimension of perplexity and demolition that is, generally,

past portrayal (Jamison, 2016).

Suicide has been perceived since early human advancement. Hanging

was a strategy much of the time utilized before such instruments as blades

wound up ordinary. Demeanors toward suicide have moved during that time as

individuals offered names to emotions like disgrace and blame (Hooff, 2000).

Suicide is presently observed as a demonstration with complex inspiration and

many contributing components.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

The present chapter includes the research methodology of the study.

Methodology constitutes an important part of any research as it provides a plan

to proceed towards the intended objectives of the study. In more details, this part

involves the research design, research participants, locale of the study, the role

of the researchers, data sources, data collection, data analysis, trustworthiness,

and ethical consideration.

Research Design

According Robson (2002) and Chandran (2004) research design refers to

an arrangement of conditions for collection and analysis of data in a systematic

relationship with the purpose of the research such that research questions are

turned into a project. Research design has the following components: purpose(s),

theory, research questions, methods, and sampling strategy. The design is,

therefore, a plan or strategy for conducting research.

Denzin and Lincoln (2000) claim that qualitative research involves an

interpretive and naturalistic approach: “This means that qualitative researchers

study things in their natural settings, attempting to make sense of, or to interpret,

phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them” Thus, this study uses

the naturalistic approach because it studies the social phenomena in their natural

settings
CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Presented in this chapter are the results generated from the analysis of

the data from the interview. It presents themes that emerged from the analysis.

Along with the themes are comprehensive discussions which answer the

objectives of the study. This chapter focuses on the findings gathered from the

key informant during the interviews.

Before we begin our discussion, we would like to establish the symbols we

used as we present the quotations. In reference to the interview transcription

which we appended, we used P to refer to Participant Number

During the conduct of our in-depth interview, we discovered the various

views, opinions and personal feelings of the participants who attempted suicide.

We basically grouped the answers according to their similarities. The in-depth

interview gave us a wider perspective on what is attempting suicide, what the

reason and realization of the participants.

Feelings Towards Attempting Suicide

The first theme is based on the participant’s response on how they

define attempting suicide. Their response towards attempting suicide can be

elaborately described towards their experiences which we grouped into two

themes such as escape from problems in life and killing one’s own life.
CHAPTER V

IMPLICATIONS AND FUTURE DIRECTION

Presented in this chapter is a brief overview of the study. It is

followed by the implications based on the findings of the study. Future directions

in the field are also discussed here.

SUMMARY

The main objective of the study was to know the reasons for students in

attempting suicide. It specifically sought to describe the students' problem on

their daily life on why they attempted suicide.

Our analysis revealed that emerging themes in attempting suicide are

categorized into three: definitions, reasons, and realizations. Although at first,

students have different perceptions about the suicide attempt. Firstly, students

have a lot of problems that can lead them to attempt suicide. For them, it is the

only way to solve their obstacles in life. Additionally, students defined suicide

attempt as killing owns life such as slashing their own wrist and taking overdose

medicine.

Besides, students have various reasons why they attempt suicide. For

them attempting suicide is the only way to solve their difficulty in life.

Furthermore, the reason why they attempt suicide was it served as a solution to

their problem. They don’t know what they are going to do and they are just doing

it to solve their difficulty in life. Moreover, the reason why students attempting

suicide was they always receive violent words from the people around them.
