Haunted Hotel & Spa: Vacancies Open

Meggie Farber, a sophomore Secondary Education English major at Holy Family

University, is the mastermind behind Holy Family’s Haunted Hotel this year. Warping the

traditional Haunted House theme Holy Family hosts annually, Farber has put her own spin on it

by creating the Black Raven Inn and Spa. The Haunted Hotel had a number of set rooms with

various characters awaiting visitors to check in. These characters, some inspired by films and

others created by Farber and her family, all had unique personalities set to greet anyone brave

enough to wander the Hotel’s halls. The Haunted Hotel and Spa took place on October 28th in

Holy Family Hall’s basement, from 6pm to 10pm.

Farber reminisced back to her freshman year last fall, when she took part in the Haunted

House for Student Government Association (SGA).

“I made a lot of friends,” Farber said. “I just enjoyed it. I love scaring older guys.”

Farber explained that after her experience helping out last year, she was inspired to pick it

up this year and make it her own. She wanted to give others the experience she was given her

freshman year.

Farber then began to discuss what inspired her to switch the theme from a house to a

hotel. Farber explained that she wanted to stick to a Halloween theme and do something a bit

different, however nothing “too out of the box.” Using the hotel and spa theme opens the door

for a different set of rooms and characters compared to the normal rooms Holy Family has

utilized in previous years. Likewise, the name comes from Edgar Allen Poe’s poem, The Raven,

a personal favorite of Farber.

Moving on to the topic of the selected charity, Farber explains that she was inspired to

select Ferocious Fighters, a Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) charity, as the organization

where all donations would be sent. Being a victim of RSD, Farber discloses, “This disease is so

rare and it’s an invisible disease. The Ferocious Fighters send out care packages to children who

are suffering from this disease.” She selected this charity as a way to help those who fight the

disease just like her, but had this misfortune to be suffers at a young age.

All proceeds Ferocious Fighters receives goes right to buying and shipping these care

packages to young children who are suffering from RSD. Farber suffers from RSD, diagnosed at

the age of 15.

Farber hopes more students are inspired to pick up school events and explore different

ideas to express their creativity just as she did.

“As individuals, we can do so much,” Farber says, “The most someone can do is say no or that

we need to modify your idea.”
