Pre-Lab Exercise Instruction

Important: The lab exercises in this course are run on the lab setup
detailed here. Review the information in this section to
gain a better understanding of the lab environment and
how you will access it.

6 DELL EMC Education Services rashid.fujitsu@dof.abudhabi.ae

Lab Equipment Layout

This is a diagram of the lab setup you will use for completing the exercises. The environment
has DNS and NTP services running and a gateway for routing between two of its four
networks. The setup also has two UnityVSA systems connected to the multi-network
environment. It includes a simulated Windows Active Directory user environment and an NFS
Open LDAP Unix user environment, and clients to perform file storage access to Unity. It also
includes Windows, Linux, and ESXi hosts to perform block storage access via iSCSI to Unity.
The environment also includes connectivity of the UnityVSA systems to support asynchronous
remote replication of LUNs, NAS servers and file systems.

Lab Exercise 3: Storage Provisioning

Purpose: In this lab you will assign the storage tier levels to virtual
disks presented to the UnityVSA system. From that
storage space you will then create several
heterogeneous and homogeneous pools. From the pools
you will then create LUNs, Consistency Groups, NAS
servers, and file systems.

Tasks:  Assign storage tiers to the available virtual

disks. Then create two multi-tier storage pools
and three single-tier storage pools

 Create two LUNs and a multi-LUN Consistency

Group

 Create two NAS Servers; one for SMB file

access and one for NFS file access.

 Create two file systems; one for containing

SMB file data and one for NFS file data

Lab 3: Part 1 - Creating Storage Pools
This lab will show you how to create two multi-tiered FAST VP pools for general storage use and three
single tiered homogenous pools that will be used in a later lab exercise in creating VVols. In a
UnityVSA environment, Virtual Disks are created for the use of the VSA. You will assign different level
tiers to those Virtual Disks to be able to simulate a FAST VP environment. When using a physical
Unity storage array, the back end disks are automatically assigned to the correct tiers based on their
performance characteristics.

Step Action

1 From your Student Desktop system taskbar, launch Internet Explorer and
establish a Unisphere session to the VSA-Source system at IP address
192.168.1.113. The login credentials are admin/Password123!

datastores.

102 DELL EMC Education Services rashid.fujitsu@dof.abudhabi.ae

Lab 8: Part 1 - Add vCenter Hosts
Unity’s Unisphere VMware aware integration allows storage administrators to discover a VMware
environment directly from Unisphere as well as the relationships between its resources. It also allows
the creation and management of VMware datastores from the Unisphere interface which minimizes the
management overhead of configuring the provisioned storage in vCenter. Furthermore, the datastores
created in Unisphere are automatically pulled into vCenter, again reducing the amount of management
by administrators.

Lab 10: Part 2 - Observing FAST VP Data Relocation Based on Tiering
Policies
This part of the lab will demonstrate how to check the data relocation operation from a LUN and from
a storage pool.

Step Action

1 In this part of the lab we are going to perform a simple write operation to
WIN1 LUN0 and observe how FAST VP will relocate the data depending
on the storage tier policy assigned to the storage resource.

From the Student Desktop system taskbar select the Remote Desktop
Protocol (RDP) icon to launch the application.

2 Login to the WIN1 system as the Administrator.

In the Computer(s) field input: WIN1

In the User field input: administrator

In the Password field input: emc2Local!

Click the Connect button.

3 From the WIN1 system taskbar click the File Explorer icon.

Expand the Local Disk (C: ) tree and open the Big_Files folder.

There are some sizeable files located in this folder which will be used to
generate some write I/O to the WIN1 LUN0 disk.

4 Copy the four 1 GB files in the folder to the clipboard.

5 Select the WIN1 LUN0 (E: ) disk from the Windows Explorer navigation
pane.

Paste the files into the drive. Wait for the copy operation to complete.

6 From the Student Desktop return to the Unisphere session.

Note: If the Unisphere session has expired, login again.

134 DELL EMC Education Services rashid.fujitsu@dof.abudhabi.ae

Step Action

7 Navigate to Storage > Block > LUNs.

Double click the WIN1 LUN0 LUN.

You may notice that the LUN usage values do not increase to match what
was written to the LUN. This is caused by the sparse files used in the copy
operation and client-side caching. Please proceed with the lab.

8 In the properties page select the FAST VP tab.

What is the Tiering Policy that is associated with the LUN?

_______________________________________________

How was data distributed between the three tiers?

Extreme Performance Tier: ______________ %

Performance Tier: ______________ %

Capacity Tier: ______________ %

You may notice that the data on the LUN is distributed across multiple tiers
and does not reside in only the highest tier. The distribution of data
depends on the tier having space available from the pool. If there is no
space on the highest tier, space is allocated from the next highest tier
having space available for the data. The available space for the tiers within
the pool is not predictable for this lab exercise; it varies based on past
activities you may have performed. You are recording the distribution
above so that when you change the tiering policy, you can see its effect on
the data distribution.

Change the Tiering Policy to Lowest Available Tier and click Apply.

Close the properties window.

9 Navigate to Storage > Pools

Double click the FAST VP-1 storage pool.

10 In the properties window, select the FAST VP tab.

Click Start Relocation.

Step Action

11 In the Start Data Relocation enter the following settings:

- Data Relocation Rate: High

Observe that the Start time is defined as now.

Click OK to start the data relocation.

Note that the Move Down (GB) is immediately populated with the total
amount of data that is to be allocated to the lowest available tier possible
because of the tiering policy chosen for WIN1 LUN0.

Close the properties window.

12 Navigate to Storage > Block.

Double click the WIN1 LUN0 LUN.

13 In the properties window select the FAST VP tab.

How was data distributed between the three tiers?

Note: you may need to wait several minutes for the data distribution values
to change. Closing and opening the LUN Properties page will refresh the
data.

Extreme Performance Tier: ______________ %

Performance Tier: ______________ %

Capacity Tier: ______________ %

Change the Tiering Policy to Start High then Auto Tier and click Apply.

Close the properties window.

14 Navigate to Storage > Pools. Double click the FAST VP-1 storage pool.

Lab Exercise 14: Space Reclamation

Purpose: Demonstrate how to manually shrink a UFS64 file

system and reclaim space back to the storage pool, and
verify the new advertised size and the space allocated
from the pool.

Shrink a UFS64 file system with storage space.

Tasks:
Verify space usage within the pool.

170 DELL EMC Education Services rashid.fujitsu@dof.abudhabi.ae

Lab 14: Part 1 - Shrink a Thin UFS64 File System

Step Action

1 On this lab section we will manually shrink the capacity of a Unity thin file
system using the Unisphere interface.

From your Student Desktop system, open a Unisphere session to the lab
VSA-Source Unity system IP address 192.168.1.113

2 In Unisphere navigate to Storage > Pools.

Double-click the FAST VP-2 pool and open its properties.

3 From the FAST VP-2 properties window navigate to the Usage tab.

The default Capacity option is selected and the Current Pool Capacity is
displayed.

A graph showing space related information for the pool is displayed.

Hovering the mouse over the graph displays its used and free space
information as well as space used for any snapshots if present. The pool
subscribed information is also shown on the page. The subscribed space
used is the percentage of the pool’s total space that has been requested
by its associated storage resources. When this value is over 100%, the
pool is oversubscribed. For example, you can create a thin provisioned file
system having a size that is greater than the pool’s capacity and the pool
would then be oversubscribed.

Record the following:

- Pool Capacity: _______________

- Free space: __________________
- Subscribed percentage: ____________
- Used space: _________________

171 DELL EMC Education Services rashid.fujitsu@dof.abudhabi.ae

Step Action

4 From the Usage tab select the Storage Resources option.

The NAS servers and file systems that were created in the storage pool
are displayed along with the space they are using from the pool and space
consumed by their snapshots if present.

Review the values displayed in the Total Pool Space Used (GB) column.
Add all of these values together and verify that the sum correlates to the
Pool’s Used space you recorded above.

Select the SMB_fs file system and record its Total Pool Space Used
(GB) value. _______

Click on the edit icon (pencil) or double-click the selection to open its
properties.

5 The file system properties window displays various space related

information. Record the following:

Allocated capacity: ______________ (hover mouse over blue bar)

Used space: ______________
Pool free space: _______________

6 From the SMB_fs Properties window

Change the size field to 5 GB.

Click the Apply button to commit the change.

7 A warning message is displayed alerting the user the file system will be
reduced in size with an estimate of how much space will be returned to
the pool.

How much space will be returned to the storage pool? ______________

Click Yes to continue with the operation.

172 DELL EMC Education Services rashid.fujitsu@dof.abudhabi.ae

Step Action

8 From the file system properties window record the following:

Allocated capacity: ______________

Pool free space: _______________

Did the Pool free space value recorded here increase from the value
recorded in step 5 above? __________

Did the increase in Pool free space correlate to the value recorded in step
7? ____

Close the properties window.

9 From the Storage Resources page review the Total Pool Space Used
(GB)

What is the Total Pool Space used by the file system? _____________

Notice that the space this file system uses from the pool is actually greater
that the file system’s capacity. To explain this, when a new file system is
created it uses space from the pool corresponding to its Minimum
Allocation size which is 3 GB in this case. It also allocates another 3 GB of
space used for tracking the pool slices that the file system uses. This is
metadata needed for file system operations as data gets stored on the file
system and as extensions to the file system are made.

administrator.

In the Computer(s) field input: WIN1

In the User field input: hmarine\administrator

In the Password field input: emc2Admin!

Click the Connect button.

2 Before performing replication operations, you will add some data to the
Top$ share on the SMB_fs file system served by the NAS_SMB NAS
Server.

From the WIN1 taskbar click the Run icon and in the Open field input:
\\NAS_SMB\Top$

A window to the share opens. Right-click in the share and select New >
Text Document. Open the file and add the following line to the file: This
line was added prior to the manual sync operation.

Save and close the file.

Close the share window.

3 From your Student Desktop system, in the Unisphere session to the VSA-
Source system navigate to Storage > File > File systems. Select the
