ENTERPRISE PROJECT MANAGEMENT

(EPS)

ENTERPRISE PROJECT MANAGEMENT
PRIMAVERA is an Enterprise Project Management software package that enables many projects to be
managed in one database. These projects may be summarized under a hierarchical structure titled the
Enterprise project Structure (EPS). This feature is similar to summarizing activities of a project under a Work
Breakdown Structure (WBS).

An EPS is used for the following purposes:

•To manage user access to projects within the database.
•To manage activities over multiple projects that have a common interest , such as a critical resource.
•Top-down budgeting of projects and resources that may later be compared to the bottom-up or detailed
projects estimates.
•To allow standardized reporting of all projects in the database.

Individual projects must be created within an EPS database. Primavera has not been designed as a single
project planning and scheduling software package and there is an administrative overhead in managing
projects in an EPS database. You may wish to consider managing single projects using Primavera Contractor
which does not have the overhead of managing an Enterprise database but has activity limits.

Primavera has a function titled Portfolios that enables a limited number of projects to be viewed at a time. For
example, Portfolio would enable you to view projects in a physical area, or a specific type of client.

EPS
Hierarchical structure that identifies the company-wide projects and
enables organizing and management of those projects.

ACTIVITIES TYPES
TASK DEPENDENT
Typically used when the work needs to be accomplished in a given time frame, regardless of the assigned
resources availability.
RESOURCE DEPENDEDNT
Typically used when multiple resources assigned to the same activity can work independently . The activity’s
resources are scheduled according to their individual resource calendar. Duration is determined by the availability
of the resources assigned to work on the activity.
START MILESTONE
Typically used to mark the beginning of a phase or to communicate the project deliverables. Zero duration
activity and only has a start date. Can assign constraints, expenses, work products, and documents. Cannot assign
resource/role.
FINISH MILESTONE
Typically used to mark the end of a phase or to communicate project deliverables. Zero duration activity and only
has a finish date. Can assign constraint, expenses, work products, and documents. Cannot assign resources/roles.
LEVEL OF EFFORT
Typically used for ongoing tasks dependent on other activities. Duration is determined by its successors/
predecessor activities. Clerical work, security guard, meetings, and project management tasks. Cannot assign
constraints.
WBS SUMMARY
Typically used to summarize at WBS levels. The WBS summary activity comprises a group of activities that share a
common WBS level. Cannot assign constraints to WBS summary activities.

DURATION TYPES
Established by the user to determine how Scheduling calculations are performed. The recommended setting is Fixed
Duration and Units. Settings which allows you to control how P6 synchronizes the Duration, Labor/Non labor Units and
Resource Units / Time for activities so that the following equation is always true: { Duration x Units / Time = Units }

DURATION TYPE
None of the Duration type options effect how schedule calculates until one or more resource(s) are
assigned to an activity.
Resource Curves are assigned only with two duration types i.e, Fixed duration & Units / time & Fixed
duration & Units.
FIXED DURATION & UNITS
Activities indicate that neither the activities duration nor units will change regardless of the number of
resources assigned to
the activity. Original activity durations are not affected by scheduling calculations and can only be
changed by manually
inputting a new duration.
FIXED UNITS
Activity requires fixed amount of work and will be finished faster if more resources are assigned.
FIXED UNITS / TIME
Activities have resources with fixed productivity output per time period.
FIXED DURATION & UNITS / TIME
Activity will take the same amount of time no matter what resources are assigned to it.

PERCENT COMPLETE TYPE
The way in which the percent complete for the selected activity is
determined. The setting determines how the progress of an activity will be
measured. The recommended setting is Physical % Complete.
Duration Type :
Calculated % complete based on actual activity progress. The selected
activity's Activity % Complete is tied to its Duration % Complete. Establishes
link between Duration %, Remaining Duration and Actual resource units.
Units Type :
The selected activity's Activity % Complete is tied to its Units % Complete.
Establishes link between Actual resource units and Units %.
Physical Type :
Manually entered percent complete, not calculated. Allows the user to enter
the Actual percent complete based on their assessment instead of using a
percent complete calculated by P6. The selected activity's Activity %
Complete is tied to the Physical progress. No link is established between
Physical %, Remaining duration and Actual Resource units.

ACTIVITY CALENDAR
Three calendar pools are defined: Global, Resource, and
Project .

The global calendar pool contains calendars that apply to

all projects.
The project calendar pool is a separate pool of calendars
for each project.
The resource calendar pool can be a separate pool of
calendars for each resource.

You can assign either resource or global calendars to

resources, and you can assign either global or project
calendars to activities.

ADDING RELATIONSHIP TO ACTIVITIES
A relationship defines how an activity relates to the start or finish of another activity
or assignment. Add relationships between activities to create a path through your
schedule from the first activity to the last activity. These relationships, which form the
logic of the project network, are used together with activity durations to determine
schedule dates. An activity can have as many relationships as necessary to model the
work that must be done. You can also identify relationships between activities that
are in different projects; this type of relationship is referred to as an external
relationship.
Relationship Types Finish to start, Finish to finish, Start to start, Start to finish. Default
relationship is Finish to start.
Select all activities using SHIFT + DOWN ARROW

Select an activity and select its successor from “Successor” tab in the activity detail
form. Activity details can be enabled from list of toolbars shown on top of the layout.

SCHEDULING
Your project schedule can be calculated in one of two ways:

• when you choose the Scheduling command or, each time you make a change that affect
schedule dates. The Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling technique is used to calculate project
schedules. CPM uses activity durations and relationships between activities to calculate the project
schedule.
• To schedule the project activate Tools/ Schedule menu or strike F9 toggle key. Select the Data
Date and click on Schedule command. Schedule the project on Data Date: January 1, 2016

Primavera Enterprise (P6) schedules the project on Critical Path Method and Critical Path for the
project is displayed with red colored activity bars.

Primavera Enterprise calculates schedule early dates during forward pass calculation and schedule
late dates are calculated during backward pass calculation.

The difference between Late Finish and Early finish dates of an activity is termed as Total Float.
Activities with Zero Total Float are identified as critical activities and sequence of activities with
Zero Total Float lead to Critical Path or Longest Path of the project. To check this date activate
Projects from HOME page and click on Dates tab. The project finish date for House Construction
should be

MILESTONE

A milestone represents any significant event or

goal in a project. Although P6 considers them
a type of activity, milestones have zero
duration; at any given moment they are either
achieved or not.
