An Angel’s Flight on Earth

“arf! arf! arf!” Ryzza barked at me while I was walking down the street. It’s been five years
since my dad gave her to his friend. She was my favourite dog but dad had to give her out because
of my allergies.

“I’m home!” I shouted as soon as I opened the door, my voice echoed against the dusty
old walls of the house. I stopped for a moment waiting for someone to answer but no one did. I
went to my room upstairs and changed my clothes. I stared at the ceiling, eyes opened with my
arms in the back of my head. The pain in my feet I got from walking crawled all over my body. I
listened to the sound of the clock slowly invading my consciousness, my eyelids got heavier in
every tick of the hands of the clock and slowly I fell asleep.

I opened my eyes in the darkness of my room. I couldn’t see anything but the light coming
from the moon piercing through the window of my room. I looked at the time in my phone and
it read 3:06 in the morning. Someone’s in the kitchen. I could smell the savoury roasted chicken
coming from the kitchen downstairs, I immediately ran down the stairs not caring for the creaking
of my steps on the wooden stairs.

As soon as I reached the kitchen I saw the familiar figure of a lady standing in front of the
sink washing some fruits. “Mom! Thank goodness you came. I was starving”. She didn’t answer
instead, she looked at me with her blank lonely eyes and gave me a cold smile. She served the
food and sit on one of those old chairs facing the table against me. As always, I went to bed after
I finished eating and listened to my mother’s best bed time stories.

“Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!” I heard a bunch of children at my age cheer at me while one of
them standing in front of me, smirking. “I—I can’t. I’m afraid of heights Aivee I can’t jump. I’m scared
Aivee please don’t let me do this.” I pleaded to the smirking girl standing in front of me. “You can’t?
Then why did you dressed yourself as a fairy for Halloween? You know fairies can fly, so should you.” She
walked a little towards me that made me walk a little backwards. “Come on. You won’t die in case
your fake wings didn’t work.” I heard her laugh loudly along with her friends. Then one moment, I
felt her hand on my back pushing me towards the edge of the rooftop in our school. With the next
few seconds, nothing came in my head. I was thinking how the wind slowly caress my cheeks as
I fell from the rooftop of a 5 storey building.

I opened my eyes. “Bad dream.” I sighed. I went downstairs when I heard my dad entering
the house. “Dad! You’re here! I thought you wouldn’t remember my birthday!” I hugged him tightly.
He closed his eyes as if he’s feeling the tightness of my hug. “You ready?” He asked. I nodded
cheerfully with a wide smile on my face. “Let’s go.” My mom said as she get the car key and
handed it to my father.

We drove down the village and stopped somewhere gloomy. It was a large empty grassy
space and nothing but stones carved with words. I followed them until they stopped in front of
one of the stones. “Ella Rose Mcraige” I read my name on the stone. “It’s been 4 years honey and I
still can’t accept the truth.” My mom said in between of her sobs. “Our little fairy became an angel too
soon.” My dad comforted her. I cried and cried until my voice echoed in the emptiness of the
place.
It’s been four years of fooling myself.
