Organizational Behavior

1. Megan Mahoney is not happy about her colleagues’ behavior toward

her. For this behavior, should Megan lay the blame on her colleagues or
not? Why do you think so?

We could apply Attribution theory to find out whether it is appropriate to blame

the senior nurse who was mean to Megan. There are three things that we have to
analyze to determine the cause of behavior of senior nurse.

First, “Distinctiveness”, is the senior nurse did the same things to other nurses too?
I would say yes, because when Barbara Norris had a one-on-one meeting with 29
staff members, she finds out a few problems within nurses, and one of the problems
is that senior nurses were often highly critical and complained about them behind
their back rather than helping and mentoring the newer nursing staff. From this
information we can say that senior nurse did the same things to other new nurses
thus “Distinctiveness” is Low.

Second, “Consensus”, is other people else then senior nurse had a problem with
Megan Mahoney? I would say no. The reason is that when Barbara Norris observed
Megan Mahoney, she was very bright and affable nurse who cared deeply about
her patients and she also received a lot of positive feedback from patients and their
families. So, in the case of “Consensus” it is Low.

Last, “Consistency”, is the senior nurse being always means to Megan Mahoney? I
would say yes to the question. It had been a year since Megan joined the unit but
the day when they had the Off-site Megan said she wants to feel like belong and
be like a member of the team, it means that she doesn’t feel like a member of
team and she also said that some mean things happened a few weeks ago.
According to this text we could say that levels of “Consistency” is High.

Therefore, we can say that the cause of behavior of senior nurse is internal cause.
It means, causes are believed to be under the control of the person who behaves.
So, in my opinion, Megan has right to blame on senior nurses. Because the problem
is senior nurse him or herself.

2. Which motivation theory should Barbara Norris use to motivate Megan

Mahoney? Why do you think so?

Barbara Norris should use the McClelland’s Theory of Needs. Basic idea of theory
is people are motivated by the need for Achievement, Power and Affiliation. And
every person has a different priority to these three needs.

In the case of Megan Mahoney, she gives the most valuable need to a need for
Affiliation. When they had the off-site Megan Mahoney said she wants to feel like
belong and member of a team and she also wanted a direct feedback from senior
nurses. Through these, we can say she has a strong need for affiliation.

Looking at the character of Megan Mahoney she is bright and affable. She didn’t
quit the job till now despite all the pains she got from the relationship. Thus, I think
it means she still has a leeway to forgive the senior and make the relationship
better. Because if she has no mind to forgive them, she might already leave the
hospital and looking for other jobs.

So, what Barbara Norris should do to motivate Megan Mahoney is to reconcile

the senior nurse and Megan Mahoney and break the wall between senior and new
nurses. It looks like seniors try to divide them from the new and make hierarchy.
Barbara Norris should make regular meeting of the senior and new to ease the
tension between them and share the information. Through this time, they could
share their feedback officially and make the relationship batter.
