Setting:

The scene is from a current affairs related live morning show.

There are two guests in the show with contrasting personalities.
One of them symbolizes sophistication while the other one is
complete opposite. Other two characters are host and producer of
the show. While host is trying to ensure smooth continuity of
the show, the producer complicates things with his naïve attempt
to control every aspect of the show.

Characters:

Host of the show

Guest A

Guest B

Producer

Dialogues:

Host: Good Morning. Welcome to “name of the show”. I am “name of

host”, your host for today’s show and we are going to discuss a
very serious issue. The situation unraveling in the Middle East
has left us with a lot of unanswered questions and we will
discuss this situation with our guests.

Our first guest is “Mr. A” who is a renowned journalist and has

been a foreign media corresponded to Middle East for last two
decades.

And our second guest is, whoa! Who are you?

Security!!!

Producer: (In Microphone of host) No! No! , Don’t do that. Let

him stay, he showed up right before the show, I couldn’t say no
to him, he is an old friend of mine.

Guest B: I’ll tell you who I am, I am friends with producer of

this show and believe me or not they say I am a real expert in
foreign affairs (laughs loudly).
Host: Yeah! I just got confirmation and I am extremely sorry
about this unpleasantness. As a matter of fact, I wasn’t
informed that you are going to be here.

Guest B: Well, now you know, treat me with respect, because you
still don’t know who I am.

Host: This is a live broadcast, so, sir, please choose your

words carefully and beware of what you are going to say.

Guest B: Yeah. Okay.

Producer: (In Microphone of host) ask them about their position

on Israel-Palestine conflict!

Host: Lets formally begin our program, Mr. “A”, How did things
go so catastrophically wrong in Middle East and how did things
got ……….?

(Guest B interrupts)

Guest B: I will tell you what’s going on in that part of the

world, they are killing each other, they are just killing each
other because all they wanna do is kill each other. So, yeah,
they are killing each other. That’s what’s happening in Middle
East.

Host: Thanks for your insight. But sir, please speak on your
turn.

Host: (Speaks while pointing towards Guest A) I hope you heard

the question.

Guest A: Yes, I did hear your question.

Producer: (In Microphone of host) what are you doing, they

aren’t even arguing with each other, make things a bit
interesting!

Guest A: In last few years we have witnessed dramatic turn of

events in Middle East. In the very beginning, this appeared to
be a politically motivated revolution and it was named”Arab
Spring”. But all of the sudden what just appeared to be a step
towards democracy became a bloody battle for influence in the
region. International powers got involved by means of proxies
and thus the political instability in the region gave way to a
full blown war and chaos.

Guest B: (Yawns loudly) Man you are so boring, and sad. And.

(Host Interrupts)

Host: And what is your interesting opinion?

Guest B: There’s Russia, there is America, there’s Israel too!

They say! There are so many countries involved there.btw I am
with Russia

Producer: (In Microphone of host) ask them about Israel, now is

the time. Do it right now.

Host: What do you mean by “I am with Russia”?

Guest B: (whispers in guest B’s ear) there is Emma Watson in

Russia.

Host: What did he just say?

Guest A: (Speaks hesitatingly) He said that he is supporting

Russia because there is Emma Watson there.

Host: If that is your reason for supporting Russia, you should

probably know that Emma Watson lives in England.

Guest B: (speaks loudly) Oh thanks. I am with England. I am with

England now.

Guest A: As a matter of fact, I would like to point out that

England is not involved in any way or form in any conflict in
the Middle East.

Guest B: Doesn’t matter bro! I am still with England. There is

Emma there. You know.

Host: Don’t you think that you and rest of international

community should be supporting the people of the Middle East,
like the Syrian people who have really suffered during the last
few years.

Guest B: Yeah! I don’t know man.

Host: Stop calling me “man”.

Guest B: Sorry bro!

Host: I am a bit surprised by everything you said, what do you

even know about Middle East? Which countries share the border
with, let’s say, Iraq?

Guest B: France, Australia and South Africa.

Host: 3 countries on 3 different continents, and no one of them

even lies in Asia let alone Middle East. I am surprised. That’s
pathetic, even by your standards. You won’t be getting anymore
questions.

Guest B: Whatever!

Host: Is there any hope left for people living there? Or let me
re-phrase this, can things get better for people living there?

Guest A: Whenever there is a will, there is a way, the political

elite should take responsibility and while moving ahead they
must learn from their mistakes and make sure not to repeat them.
The society too should step up and set all of their differences
aside to move forward in shaping a better future.

Guest B: They will never do that. Let them do what they like
doing.

Host: I know I will regret asking this. But what is that thing?

Guest B: Civil War man. Civil War. That’s what they are good at.

Guest A: This is a really horrible thing to say. You (Guest B

interrupts)

Guest: And you have a horrible voice, and a horrible tie, and a
horrible a horrible accent and the list goes on!!

Guest A: Okay, that’s enough. I am leaving.

Producer: (In Microphone of host) stop him! Don’t let him leave;
this is real killer for the ratings.

Host: What’s your problem “Calls producer by name”, stop bugging

in my ear and why don’t you jump in to talk this friend of yours
who is just as ignorant as you.
Producer: Calm down.

Host: Just come here and sort this thing right now!

Producer: Almost there, just stop screaming.

Producer: (speaks hurriedly) Boys, not like this, not like this,
it’s ok to fight a little and it is really good for the ratings.
Actually it is excellent for the ratings, as long as you don’t
walk out. Still, this type of exit really kills the ratings.
Don’t do that, please!

Guest A: Give me one good reason to stay.

Producer: (Appears confused) well, there is coffee at the end.

Guest A: You think a cup of coffee is really going to stop me?

You are as disgraceful (Host interrupts).

Host: Listen “Calls guest A by name”, Please, I know you didn’t

start this but you can stop this from blowing out of control,
so, please just, have a seat. We are winding up the show anyway!

Producer: Yes, exactly, that’s what I meant to say, sorry man, I

am not good with words, that’s why I hired her to do all the
talking.

Host: All right! Just tell this friend of yours that he is not
saying a word for the rest of the show so that we can continue.

Guest B: Oh! That is.

(Producer Interrupts)

Producer: Listen! Listen! Calm down, just help out a bother

here.

Producer: (whispers something inaudible in Guest B’s ear)

Producer: So, back to normal.

Host: Are we still live?

Host: Then leave.

Producer: (baffled voice) okay, okay, I am leaving but, you

still haven’t asked that question related to Israel.
Host:(speaks in mildly aggressive tone) I am not asking that
question, okay, do you understand; I am not asking that
question, okay, just leave right now, okay?

Host: So, that’s how modern day electronic media looks like.
Incompetent people find their way on higher levels. Distorted
and sometimes completely fabricated facts are deliberately
presented just to justify rogue agenda of a group of people.
Current affair shows in which grown up men fight like savages
turn out to be the best rated ones.

If media really is fifth pillar of our state, then I’m afraid

that by the looks of it, we have a very fragile pillar. There is
a lot of work that needs to be done. I will sign of today’s show
emphasizing the fact that focus of electronic media must shift
from generating ratings to educating this nation, addressing
the issues that lie in the very core of our society and playing
a constructive role in nation building.
