1. Introduction
Writing is an essential skill for EFL learners because it is a means through which they
develop their critical thinking and enhance their creativity. Specifically, it is crucial for
students of all levels as it helps them to excel in their (Zahida, Farrah, & Zaru, 2014). For
example, it enables them to write their essays, answer questions, prepare their reports,
write their research papers, and other writing assignments.
Writing is considered an important skill and probably the most difficult to master. It is
central to the fulfillment of various writing assignments/projects in varied fields of
human endeavors. Year 3 pupils in tamil schools encounter numerous problems in
writing. One of the most common problems, which are not taken seriously by most
learners and many instructors, is the proper production of punctuation and
capitalization. This is a phenomenon that is clearly observed in almost all students'
written works and exams. Capitalization and punctuation and proper construction of
simple sentences has been taught as separate skills while these pupils are in year 2.
However the pupils are identified to be unable to write a proper simple sentence as a
whole.(Marianne, 2012) Therefore, the researcher has come up with a method to
resolve the capitalization and punctuation issues. This method is called the ‘Grammer
COPS’. This metho is traditionally called the student evaluation method where students
recheck and evaluate their sentences using COPS. COPS stands for C= Capitalization,
O=Organized, P=Punctuation and S=Spelling.
