Expiration and drug damage

Like food, the drug also has an expiration date. The expiration date is usually written on the
medicine package. This expiration date indicates that up to the intended date, the quality and
purity of the drug is guaranteed to still meet the requirements. The expiration date is usually
stated in months and years, and the expiration date applies to the drug in its original
packaging.

In contrast to drugs that have not been opened or have not been used at all, there are things
we need to pay attention to when we open the medicine or we have used it. When the drug
has been opened, the drug is no longer in the same environmental condition, so it is possible
for the drug to experience changes in the drug.

Some causes of changes that can occur in drugs that have been opened are as follows

Degradation

Included in the degradation process are hydrolysis, oxidation and photodegradation.

Hydrolysis speed of a drug is influenced by the presence of water, for example the use of
antibiotic syrup powder, on antibiotic powder syrup added to water (ex. Cefadroxil syrup
powder) then the grace period for the use of the drug is only 14 days at room temperature.

In addition the drug also reacts with oxygen, so that drugs that are opened and interact with
free air containing oxygen can cause degradation.

Contamination
Some drops include open eye drops which are at risk of being contaminated with dirt or even
bacteria in the air.

The following is a recommended time table for storing medicines that have been opened

In addition to degradation and contamination, changes in drug quality can also be seen in
each type of preparation, including:

Tablet:
1. Changes in color, smell or taste occur.
2. Damage in the form of stains, spots, holes, cracks, cracks or foreign objects, powder
and moisture
3. The packaging is broken
Capsule
1. Change the color of capsule contents
2. Capsules open, empty, damaged or attached to one another

Salut tablets
1. Broken, changes in color.
2. Wet and sticky with each other.
3. The packaging is damaged, causing physical abnormalities.

Fluid
1. Become cloudy or precipitate arises
2. Consistency changes Color or taste changes
3. Plastic bottle is damaged or leaking
Ointment
1. Color changes
2. Pot or tube damaged or leaking
3. The smell changes

Thus we can conclude that there are differences in the expiration time between drugs that
have been opened and unopened, therefore apart from paying attention to the expiration date
stated in the packaging, we must pay attention to signs of drug damage when the drug has
been used or opened.
