Rationale for Standard 5: Innovative Applications of Content
Artifact name: Meteorologist
Standard:
The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage
learners in critical/creative thinking and collaborative problem solving related to authentic
local and global issues.
What the Standard means to me:
In order for the students to get passionate about their learning, they need to interact with
something that they can relate to. Students will be engaged in their learning if the educator is
providing them realworld critical and creative thinking that allows them to be problem
solvers.
Indicator:
5 (p) Knows where and how to access resources to build global awareness and understanding,
and how to integrate them into the curriculum.
Description of the artifact:
These meteorologist reports are something that came from Scholastic. I wanted to incorporate
them into the classroom, because scholastic is something that the students are familiar with,
and it related back to our air and weather unit. We read the Scholastic as a whole class. While
reading I paused the students and asked higher order questions to get them thinking about
natural disasters, as well as, a meteorologists job. After reading the Scholastic the students had
the opportunity to become a meteorologist and report on the natural disasters that we just read
about. Some of the answers involved creativeness, while other answers had them think back
about what they had read and applied it to this activity.
Rationale:
I wanted this air and weather unit to really have meaning for the students, instead of just
learning a bulk of information and never using it again. I saw the Scholastic as an opportunity
to build on their understanding of global awareness. I had previously taught them what a
meteorologist is, so it was interesting to see them become a meteorologist and do their own
reports. I integrated this into the curriculum to build on their knowledge, as well as, relate the
content to what is happening around them outside of the school building. I am proficient in this
standard and indicator because I am able to integrate resources into the classroom that help the
students build their understanding of the things going on around them.
