Metric Nut & Pilot Bearing change to 34,000 -45,00 lbs. Tandem
AXIB-9409
Models: DS341, DS403(P), DS451-P
Effective January 1, 1995, Eaton DS402 and related tandem axles will be modified to simplify servicing of Eaton tandems
and improve performance. These modifications will also allow older 40,000 lb. tandem axles to be serviced with the same
primary gearing used in current DS402 axles.

Description of Changes
Metric Nut Threads on Drive Pinion, Input and Output Shaft
Forward and rear drive pinions will be built with metric threads and the same mechanical (crimp-style) self-locking
fasteners used in the recently-introduced DS404 tandem axle family. These provide locking characteristics superior to the
nylon insert nuts used previously and allow deletion of the flat washers used in tandem rear (RS) units.
D402 input and output shaft designs have also been modified to use metric threads and yoke-attaching nuts derived
from other current production axles. These mechanical locking nuts provide superior locking characteristics than the nylon
collar designs they replace. For torque specifications on metric nuts, see table 1 (below).

CAUTION: * These metric nuts have an integral flange washer built into them. Do not use separate washer in conjunction with these nuts. Do
not attempt to install the Metric style nuts onto parts with lnch threads and Vice-Versa,thread damage will occur.

Revised Pinion Pilot Bearing
DS402 gear sets produced after 1/1/95 will employ a new pinion pilot bearing and revised machining
characteristics to simplify manufacturing while maintaining the improved thrust-loading performance
characteristics of the pilot bearing designs used in single reduction models since 1989. (See Bearing Part
Numbers listed below)

Eaton p/n Industry p/n

Current Bearing 127051 MUS-7307
New Bearing 129175 MUS-1307

The new bearing has a different width, which requires a different drive pinion stub configuration. In service,
exercise care to match the correct pilot bearing to the appropriate drive pinion. The two bearings are not
interchangeable.

Effect on Service

Components remaining available to facilitate the repair and maintenance of 381 and older (pre-1995) 402 will include inch
dimension pinion nuts (p/n 118806, 95206), 56864 flat washer, 15828 and 127015 pinion pilot bearings. These parts may
not be used to service production axles built after January 1,1995.
Parts may be identified by reading the part number or date code stamped on the threaded end of the drive pinion. The date
code of these changes is “5A” and after. (see Pinion Illustration & Table 3).
