Description of Changes
Metric Nut Threads on Drive Pinion, Input and Output Shaft
Forward and rear drive pinions will be built with metric threads and the same mechanical (crimp-style) self-locking
fasteners used in the recently-introduced DS404 tandem axle family. These provide locking characteristics superior to the
nylon insert nuts used previously and allow deletion of the flat washers used in tandem rear (RS) units.
D402 input and output shaft designs have also been modified to use metric threads and yoke-attaching nuts derived
from other current production axles. These mechanical locking nuts provide superior locking characteristics than the nylon
collar designs they replace. For torque specifications on metric nuts, see table 1 (below).

CAUTION: * These metric nuts have an integral flange washer built into them. Do not use separate washer in conjunction with these nuts. Do
not attempt to install the Metric style nuts onto parts with lnch threads and Vice-Versa,thread damage will occur.

The new bearing has a different width, which requires a different drive pinion stub configuration. In service,
exercise care to match the correct pilot bearing to the appropriate drive pinion. The two bearings are not
interchangeable.
