Homework – Digital Systems I

1. Apply DeMorgan’s Theorems to each expression:

a) ( ̅ + + + ) ̅
b) ( + )( + )

2. Write the Boolean expression for each of the logic circuits

a)

b)

3. Draw the logic circuit represented by each expression

a) ̅ ( + )
b) + [ + ( + ̅ )]

4. Determine which of the logic are equivalent

a)

b)
c)

d)

5. For each truth table, derive a standard SOP and a standard POS expressions:

a)

b)

6. Minimize the following SOP expression using a Karnaugh map:

a) ̅ ̅ + ̅ ̅ + ̅ + ̅ + ̅ + ̅ + ̅ ̅ + ̅ +
̅ + ̅
7. The output waveform in the figure is incorrect for the inputs that are applied to the circuit.
Assuming that one gate in the circuit has failed, with its output either an apparent
constant HIGH or a constant LOW, determine the faulty gate.

8. Implement the following logic circuits using:

a) NAND gates
b) NOR gates

9. Develop the logic circuit necessary to meet the following requirements:

A battery-powered lamp in a room is to be operated from two switches, one at the
back door and one at the from door. The lamp is to be on if the fornt switch is on and
the back switch is off, or if the front swith is off and the back switch is on. The lamp is
to be off if both switches are off or if both switches are on. Let a HIGH output
represent the on condition and a LOW output represent the off condition.

10. Design a circuit to enable a chemical additive to be introduced into the fluid through
another inlet only when the temperature is not too cold or too hot and the fluid is above
the high-level sensor.
