Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to apply for the Registered Nurse RN Medical Surgical Position at Banner
University Medical Center Tucson Campus. I learned about this position through the Banner
Health website. I would be graduating from the University of Arizona College of Nursing.

As a graduate of the University of Arizona College of Nursing, I have a strong academic

background in the medical surgical unit. I completed a clinical rotation at Tucson Medical
Center with the medical surgical unit and completed my preceptorship in Encompass Health
Rehabilitation Center’s medical surgical unit. In my preceptorship at Encompass Health, I
worked one-on-one with patients with different medical diagnosis. These diagnosis included: a
cerebral vascular accident, paralysis from diabetes, individuals recovering from kidney
transplants and hip replacements. During my experience, I became familiar with the different
medications used for each disease process. I also learned to tailor my head-to-toe assessment
based on the patient’s diagnosis while prioritizing nursing care based on the patient’s acuity. I
have experience using different IV pumps, administering medication through a central line or a
nasal gastric tube and providing feeding and medication administration through a percutaneous
endoscopic gastrostomy. Finally, my preceptorship provided experience in assessing pressure
ulcers and changing the dressing as needed for different size pressure ulcers.

Through my nursing courses, I have gained knowledge performing different forms of assessment
such as physical, psychological, social, spiritual and educational development. I have also
learned to monitor patient diagnostic and laboratory data and communicate any acute change of
condition with other healthcare professionals on my care team. In my preceptorship, I also
gained skills in setting realistic goals for patient. I have experience in educating patients and their
family members on the different medication the patient is taking and how administer the
medication at home. During one rotation, I worked with a stroke patient’s children to
demonstrate how to measure their mother’s blood sugar and administer insulin subcutaneously. I
am comfortable using electronic medical record systems such as Epic and Cerner.
