Operation Crude oil desalting

Desalting process is one of the most important processes in the distillation unit, as these salts cause
problems for heat transfer equipment. These salts are known as reverse solubility salts which increase
the deposition rate with increasing temperature, thus reducing the heat exchange area and thus the
rates Heat transfer and also cause pressure drop inside such equipment as the salts of Ca and Mg

increases the process of corrosion of equipment

Most of these salts are present with the water associated with the ore and the reason for the difficulty
of separation is the composition of the emulsion with the ore and therefore the emulsion must be
broken to allow the water to sink and take with it salts

This process occurs by mixing raw with wash water and Demulsifiers and then entering the Desalter

The desalter is a vessel with two poles. An electric current is passed, resulting in a voltage difference
between the electrodes. This electrical voltage causes the particles to vibrate and stick to some of them,
increase their weight and facilitate their deposition. The water is separated with the salts from the
bottom of the container.
