Purpose
The Restoration House exists to aid in restoring single mothers and their children back to God‟s good intent for their
lives.

Miss ion
The purpose of TRH is accomplished by providing supportive transitional housing and mentorship in a safe learning
environment where single mothers and their children are given an opportunity to restore Life‟s Four Key
Relationships through a personalized, guided plan.

Lif e’ s F our K ey R el ati onship s

God – Our relationship with God is the central relationship that affects all others.

Self – God desires for us to view ourselves as He does; as created by Him and in His
own image.

Others – God desires for us to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Creation – God desires for us to act responsibly toward His creation; He calls us to
be good stewards of all that He gives us.

Five-Way Pa rtne rship Mode l

The mission is accomplished in the context of a five-way
partnership model in which each party contributes
to the overall restoration of the family.
2007 Partnership Report | 1/1/2007

3
St rategy
The Restoration House‟s holistic strategy involves three complimentary components when partnering with single
mother families.

H ou sing
TRH provides a transitional housing unit for up to two years, based on the participant‟s need. When necessary,
TRH secures rental assistance on a decreasing scale for approximately eighteen to twenty-four months. Each
mother participates in instructional courses that aid in the development of financial literacy. TRH partners with
other organizations to assist in securing permanent housing for participants when their stay at TRH concludes.
Homeownership is encouraged for qualified families along with homeownership training. Currently, TRH
partners with Habitat for Humanity, Knoxville Leadership Foundation, and Knox Housing Partnership for
families seeking homeownership. Individual Development Accounts (matched-savings) are made available for
families working toward homeownership or secondary education.

M ent o ring
Volunteers from local congregations form a team of 8 to 12 mentors to walk alongside each participating family.
The Mentor Team provides support and friendship throughout the partnership period and beyond. Our
approach creates a diverse team of mentors which allows for a broader spectrum of support. The mentors are
essential contributors to the restoration of participating families.

2007 Partnership Report | 1/1/2007
TRH staff coordinates family services. A covenant is signed by the family outlining the basic limitations and
expectations of the program. A Family Advocate assists in developing an individualized service agreement with
the participant, identifying goals and action steps in areas such as education, employment, finances, life skills, and
personal growth. Additionally, TRH partners, on an as-needed basis, with community resources for job training,
counseling, life skills, physical fitness, etc.

Highlights f rom 2007

J anu ary – E st abli shing the Bo ard

The board of directors of The Restoration House was established with six charter
members including the Executive Director. The board gathered with a great sense
of vision and excitement for the future as they started working to help single
mothers and their children be restored back to God‟s good intent for their lives.
The original board consisted of two executive directors, one marketing manager,
one pastor, one missionary, and one accountant. We can‟t thank God enough for
the people he has called to grow his vision for single mother families in the
Knoxville area.

J anu ary - St aff i s Appr ov ed

The vision of The Restoration House was birthed by God in the hearts of Daniel and Mandy Watson during the
summer of 2005. At that time Mandy was teaching full time at Christian Academy of Knoxville and Daniel was the
Associate Minister of Outreach at West Towne Christian Church. After much prayer and seeking, Mandy and Daniel
both resigned from their positions to begin working full-time in living out God‟s vision for TRH. In January of 2007
the board approved Daniel as the Executive Director effective as of March 2007 and Mandy continued in her role as
the part-time Program Coordinator.

M ay - Fir st Annual M oth er ’s D ay Off e ring

Five churches and well over 100 individuals participated in the inaugural Mother‟s
Day Offering. It was a chance to honor single mothers everywhere by giving a gift
in honor of a mother or female mentor. Over $3500 was raised to help restore
single mother families. We are looking forward to the Second Annual Mother‟s
Day Offering this May. If you, your church, or business would like to participate,
please let us know.

Jun e – A “M at ching ” Bl essing

The Restoration House received two grants from a local foundation. The first was for $4,600 and covered some
initial start up costs and the second was a three year matching grant totaling $80,000. The 1:1 match for 2007 was
for $31,000. TRH was able to fully match this initial grant by November. The same foundation is providing a 1:1
match of $28,000 and $21,000 in 2008 and 2009 respectively, after annual approvals. We can‟t thank this supporter

enough. This tremendous blessing is allowing TRH to grow its support base over time while developing its mission
and growing its program to help restore single mothers today.

July – C on sulting with W ar ren Vill age

Warren Village (WV) has been serving single-parent families in Denver, CO for over 30 years. In that time, they
have served over 3000 families, with 2400 of them graduating WV‟s two year supportive transitional housing
program, moving on toward self-sufficiency. In June, Daniel and Mandy spent 4 days in Denver meeting with each of
their department heads and interviewed mothers in the program. The valuable lessons and best practices learned
there will continue to shape The Restoration House for years to come. One of the greatest insights shared was that
the greatest factor in their success was the ability to build a sense of community among the families they serve. This is
possible because all of their families live in the same 96 unit apartment complex, built for them by HUD in the „70s.

5
July – Accept ed t o C ent er fo r C ommuni tie s
The Restoration House has been accepted into the Center for
Communities program and has begun 12 months of specialized technical
assistance. During this period TRH is working with a consultant to further
develop our board, strategic plan, and funding strategy. The services are
delivered through capacity building workshops with experiential learning,
in addition to ongoing coaching/mentoring. TRH is privileged to be a part of such a reputable training program. We
ask for your prayers as we continue to learn and grow in order to serve families as effectively as possible!

Augu st – 501( c)3 Appr ov al

After over 100 hours of work on the application to become a 501(c)3 nonprofit, The Restoration House was
approved in August through its initial application with the IRS. This will benefit the whole organization and its
donors indefinitely. At this time we want to say a special thank you to our attorney, Kelli Thompson who donated a
significant amount of time to this effort. We couldn‟t have done it without you!

S ept emb e r – A N ew Pl ayg r ound

In September, one of Mandy‟s former students gave of himself in a way that
will continually make a difference in the lives of the future families at TRH.
For his Eagle Scout project, rising junior, Luke Miller decided he would like to
build a playground for the children of TRH. Not only did Luke raise the more
than $2,000 needed, but he also organized a work crew, practically lived at the
house for a few days, and accomplished the task with extreme excellence! Not
to mention that all this took place during the hottest month in years, all the
while wearing a brace on his injured elbow! We are so grateful!

N ov emb er – D edi cati on/ Open H ou se

TRH was chartered on October 5, 2006 and after a year of development The
Restoration House dedicated its initial housing units on November 4, 2007. It
was incredible to see over 60 supporters and community leaders come out for
this tremendous occasion. We were reminded by folks like Ron Bull, Dan
Myers, Andy Rittenhouse, Grant Standefer, Jason Warden, Shannon Warden
and so many others that Jesus is paving the way for The Restoration House in
its mission of restoring single mothers and their children.

The day after our Dedication/Open House we welcomed our first single mother to The Restoration House. Rebekah
and her three month old daughter are doing very well. Rebekah is determined and is working continually to provide
a better tomorrow for her and her daughter. She is active in church and is currently looking forward to nursing
school which she hopes to enter in April of this year. Thank you to her team of mentors and all of the community
partners who have rallied with Rebekah and her daughter.

Our second family has already been accepted and will move-in sometime in early March!

Please pray for them.

Looking Towa rd 2008
G r owing ou r C apacity fo r mo r e Familie s
The Restoration House currently only has two housing units for single mother families. We have begun work on two
complimentary strategies to grow our capacity to partner w ith more families in 2008.

Im med iate Strategy

A key component of God‟s vision for TRH is to create a place of community for the families we partner
with. This will add to their overall success while giving them an opportunity to give back as demonstrated at
Warren Village in Denver, CO. This will be extremely difficult to do if families are scattered in separate
units all over the city. For this reason we are working with friends of TRH who own a four-plex. The
Restoration House would be able to use three of the units to partner with up to three more single mother
families. With this strategy TRH would subsidize each family‟s rent for the duration of their lease, based on
their income. This could cost an average of $250 per family per month, for a total of $9,000 per year. Our
three families at this site would still be able to build a sense of community with each other though there
would be limitations with what can physically be done with the units as well as the annual subsidy expenses.

In te rm edi at e S tr at egy
TRH‟s vision for helping to restore single mother families involves purchasing
an eight to twelve unit apartment complex where we can encourage our
families to grow together as they work toward their futures. TRH has been
looking into possible properties since October of 2006. Since late 2007, TRH
has been working toward purchasing an eight unit complex east of downtown.
The asking price is $119,000. The property needs a lot of work so we are
investigating if the overall costs would be considered good stewardship. The best part is that five feet from
the apartments is a church with a 3 star, state recognized childcare. This would be an incredible asset for
our families. We will be releasing more information on this as it is made available. Please be in pray for
wisdom as we continue to look for ways to grow our capacity to partner with more families.

S tr eng thening ou r Men to r B ase

The Restoration House recognizes that it would be impossible to partner with families without a support system built
on strong relationships. We have committed to never enter into a partnership with a single mother family until there
is a team of mentors to join them on their journey toward restoration. So as TRH looks to partner with more
families many more mentors need to be trained and teams developed. A mentor team consists of a minimum of 8
2007 Partnership Report | 1/1/2007

mentors who are followers of Jesus and active in a local church. If you would like us to share more with you, your
church, or small group about mentoring please contact us. We would love to partner with you!

D e v eloping ou r IDA P rog r am

At the end of 2007, TRH received a $2,500 grant from the Kimberly Clark Corporation to begin developing an
Individual Development Accounts (matched savings) program. These IDAs will accelerate a mother‟s ability to save
toward a home or secondary education by providing a 3:1 match toward every dollar saved during her two year stay
with TRH. It is completely up to the mother how much and at what frequency she saves. TRH never puts money
aside from a families rent for the family to use later. We believe it is important for the family to learn to save. Our
goal is to invest in their investment for the future of their family. If you would like to learn more about our IDAs or
how you can invest in a families future by providing a „match‟ please contact us.
