“Where cobwebs of corruption perpetually stay;

there kingdoms sink to dust, and nations decay.”

Corruption is a worldwide problem. It is not only the problem of developed counties likes
U.S.A, U.K, France, etc. but also it is a very burning issue of the third world countries like
Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh etc. it has grown to so gigantic proportions that there is
hardly any sphere of social, political, economic and even religious activity that is free from
dismal touch of deception, trickery, treachery and corruption of some kind. The germs of
corruption have polluted every field of life. With the dawn of independence and the growth
of democracy and industry the opportunities for bribery and palm greasing have increased
greatly. Even the shrines of worship are not free from this stigma.
It is known with different names in the different countries e.g “Baksheesh” in Egypt,
“Dash” in Keny, “Mordida” in Mexico, “Bhatta” in India, “Rishwat” in Pakistan.

There are many causes of this wide spread social evil. The main cause of
corruption is “Low Wages”. A common man can’t run the van of life in a smooth way. They
need more resources and money to meet their growing requirements. Just take the
example of a clerk working in an office on a meager income who has to support his wife and
children. Finding it difficult to feed and clothe his family he begins accepting petty bribes in
his office.

Secondly, the second reason of corruption is our “Dirty Politics”. Our political leaders
are corrupt. They have been looting this fort of Quaid for last fifty years. If we look into the
history of Pakistan the long list of corrupt activities of our political leaders will clearly reveal
this bitter reality.

“If God rusts what shall iron do?”

That if a preest be foul,on we truste,

Thirdly, our law enforcing agencies have failed to curb this social evil from the society. F.I.A,
C.I.A, Police have not played positive role. Their departments have been directly or
indirectly involved in the different evil activities.

Fourthly, “Unemployment”, is also a big cause of corruption. People are jobless and
can’t bring up their families. Their domestic problems force them to enter the “Criminal
World”.

“You take my life when you take the means whereby I live.”(W.Shakespeare)

Fifthly, “The foreign Governments.” also do help in the growth of this plant of corruption.
These foreign governments fully support these political leaders, generals and others
important personalities for the achievements of their own objectives.

Sixthly, we have forgotten the saying of the “Holy Quran”. All the Islamic values are
disappearing from the Muslim societies. We are promoting western culture and injecting
evils in the veins of the youth through Dish, Cables and Internet.

"Al-rashi Wal-murtashi Kila-huma Finnar"

We know corruption has become part and parcel of our life. Despite all sermons by saints
and sages, and preventive laws by the govt. to eliminate this evil, at now taking the
nomenclature of necessary evil. If we want to eradicate this social evil from society, we
must take some positive steps.

Firstly, law should be made effective. Honest police officers should be appointed in
the police stations so that they may play their positive role to overcome this problem.
Honest judges should be appointed in the courts and those judges who do not have good
reputation should be terminated from their posts.

Secondly, political leaders should not misuse their powers. They should be men of
integrity. Those political leaders who are found guilty should be awarded heavy
punishments. Moreover Article 61,63 should be imposed strictly.

Thirdly, the salaries of the people should be increased. The difference between
buying power and the prices should be minimized.
Fourthly, education should be within the reach of all manner of people. The basic
facilities of education should be provided even the people who are living far off areas of the
country. Education can create passion of patriotism, responsibility. When people get
universally educated they will be able to work more efficiently and their earning will rise.
They will be generally satisfied and the cause of corruption will be mostly eliminated.

Fifthly, accountability courts should be established where the honest judges should
be appointed. There courts should not be used against the opposition. The govt. should not
give dictation to the judges.

In the end, I would like to say, there is no doubt corruption is very serious issue but it
is not unsolvable. It can be solved but it will take time. The best way of curbing corruption is
to launch a staunch integrity in ourselves.

Lowell has said.

Because

“Men are pure, laws are useless.

When men are corrupt laws are broken.”
