Objectives:
Upon completion of the lesson, learner will:
1. Be able to compare the different contraceptive methods
2. Be able to demonstrate how to correctly put on a condom

Introduction (3 mins)
“You will be learning about birth control or contraceptive methods with the purpose of being
familiar with them. Whether you are sexually active now, or in the future, it is important to know
how to reduce risk of unintended pregnancy and STIs. As there are many birth control methods,
you will be learning the most common birth control methods used. “
On a half sheet of paper, answer the following questions..
1. In your own words, define the term birth control
2. Name different contraceptives you have heard of.
3. What do you think is the most effective method of preventing pregnancy and STIs?

I. The common types of birth control method used
A. Abstinence
1. Abstinence - when you don’t have sex
a) Keeps sperm away from vagina to prevent pregnancy
2. Highly effective
3. Effectiveness in preventing pregnancy: 100%
4. No side effects
5. No Cost
6. May be difficult to abstain from all sexual activities or a long period of
time

B. Male Condom
1. Over the counter product
2. Thin sheath covering the erect penis during sex
3. Protects against from STIs and STDs due to the physical barrier
4. Effective in preventing pregnancy (84%)
5. Easy to carry
6. Low cost
7. May break or slip off during use, especially if used improperly
8. Must use a new condom each time you have sex

C. Female Condom
1. Over the counter product
2. Effective at preventing pregnancy (79%)
3. Offers protection against STIs
4. Insert before sex
5. May slip during sex
6. May be difficult to find in stores
7. More costly than male condoms

D. Birth Control
1. Implant
a) Prescription - Requires nurse or doctor for insertion
b) Effective against pregnancy (99.9%)
c) Implant lasts for up to 3 years
d) Costly
e) No protection against STIs
f) May be uncomfortable when inserted

2. Pills
a) Oral contraceptives -Prescription product
b) Effective against pregnancy (92%-97%) if used correctly
c) Does not interfere with spontaneity in sex
d) Makes menstrual period more regular and lighter

e) No protection against STIs

f) Must be taken each day at the same time
g) Can interfere with medication use/ problems

E. Withdrawal
1. Pulling penis out of the vagina before ejaculation
2. Neither OTC or prescription
a) Free of cost
3. Ineffective in preventing pregnancy (78%)
a) Only works when pulled out at the right time
b) Pre-ejaculation can also cause pregnancy
4. No protection against STIs

II. Condom Demonstration Instructions
A. Check expiration date printed on the wrapper or box!
1. If they have expired, throw it away! The latex and lubricant in condom
may break down
B. Before opening package, squeeze the bag for air pockets
1. this ensures that the condom have not been opened or tampered with
C. Carefully open the wrapper so you don't damage them
1. Don’t use your teeth or scissors because it may tear the condom!
D. Make sure the condom is rolled down the right way.
1. Rim should be outside- looks like a little sombrero hat.
2. If it looks like a beanie, it’s inside out! It will unroll easily.
a) If you accidently put the on condom on inside out, dont flip to
reuse it- get a new one
E. Pinch the tip of the hat to squeeze the air out and place it on tip of the penis.
F. Leave a little space to collect semen then gently roll down until you reach the
base.
G. Removal: Firmly grasps the opening of condom. Hold the rim of the condom and
carefully take the condom off.
H. Tie a knot on the condom and throw away the used condom in the trash bin.
