TOPIC SELECTION

Abstract
▪ Recreation is essential part of human life and finds many
different forms which are shaped naturally by individual
interest but also by surrounding social construction.
Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment,
amusement or pleasure & are considered to be fun and fit.
▪ Markets are the space which fulfills the daily needs of users
from ancient times. The socio-economic condition of society
depends on market success. But, today the definition of
market is changed; it provides daily needs as well as space
for recreation & socializing.
Aim
▪ To explore the potential of market as space for
▪ Recreational & public effective connections.

Need of study
▪ Markets are considered places where people meet, interact
and socialize together.
▪ It is important to understand the activity pattern and usage
pattern of the space.
▪ Sometimes the markets are not planned very well they just
evolved to provide platform to sellers and buyers. So, the
social aspects of market get destroyed.
Objectives
 To find out the components of recreation exist in market.
 To understand the spaces provided in market means for
recreation.
 To check whether market space is utilized properly or not.
 To check whether these are serving all age groups or not?
 To assess success of markets as place for social growth.
Delimitation
The scope of study included in this research is the
study of non-hierarchical commercial centers situated
in Center Point, Aligarh. The region is chosen because
it has good potential of user attraction to market
places & have traditional market zone.

Features important to make successful market are as:

Right Location: This includes several factors like easily accessible,


memorable, easy to navigate, parking management, welcoming to all,
proper size to house large group of people at a time.

prices & quality levels, local demanding.

Right Space: Sense of entry, seating availability, properly maintained, shades,


aesthetic arts, flexible.

Right Connections: Public transport accessibility, linking different


neighborhoods, bike trails, local economy, cross-cultures.

Right Promotion: Advertisement, public relations, market image, local


community, connections etc

Right Management: Flexible, open minded, open for all, good relations.

• The author explained about the market as a space where buyers


and sellers meet exchange their thoughts and resources in a
repetitive manner.
• market is a place where commercial and non-commercial
relationship both develop. Several activities occur which results in
social growth of relationship.

• The paper focus on thoughts of several sociologists and economists


related to market. Some says that market is the only space due to
which social interactions enhanced and some says that market is the
space where commercial activities and relationship grow.

• The author in the end concludes that the market is space for extra
economic relationships in which shopping and consuming provide

site: public transport and access to parking is important for some visitors.

A well laid out site: site planning, protection from weather are some important feature.
Effective management of site: like policy framework and rules regulations for market.

The attributes are used further in case study as parameters for analyzing data and
observation on site.

This research paper explores the usability of both traditional and newly designed
public spaces, how these places function. The case studies were selected from
England and Wales to understand the importance of public in creating communities.

The paper examines the importance of public space for every age group. For
children, outdoor open field could be a space for social interaction at the same time,
for old age people markets could serve space for social interaction.

Security is main concern in public space, as spaces having safety issue are not used
by people. Good planning and management is also important in case of public space
usage. If the space has road traffic problem, poor appearance bad condition of
streets, and lack of greenery, seating and public toilets, the space will be under used.

This paper focuses on change that has occurred in modern market from
ancient markets. As the needs of user have changed, their changing lifestyle
and thinking has turned the market into destination rather than just an
essential activity of the day.

Historically, markets were just a space, where food and other essential items
were brought to be sold to the masses. But due to change in demand of users,
markets are modernized with cafes, restaurants, recreational facilities and
public amenities etc. The author has worked on several case studies also for
understanding the market space of different locations. He concludes that each
market has its own identity, character & user groups.

LOCATION AND SURROUNDINGS
Center point is a place that is situated near the Railway station, which divides the city
into two parts. And it is one of the most important & trending market in the city.
The previous one was Railway road market which cater the needs of the city people.
It is in the zone of nearby educational institutions which are ultimately become the
users of market & have public amenities like bank despite of recreational one.
It can be accessible by public as well as private transport.

SPACE PLANNING
The market is planned cardinally along the junction of Samad Road & Marris Road.
It is developed unsymmetrically with space for walking for users. Green
spaces are quite less in the market.
Green parks are used for sitting, relaxing The shops are
organized well manner.

CIRCULATION PATTERN
The vehicle movement is along the periphery of the center point market. Quite
sufficient parking space was provided, internal as well on street parking.

Movement become congested during the peak hours in the market due to near-by
schools & coaching centers in the afternoon. And in the evening it was quite free
movement with proper space for walking.

`FACILITIES
The market is a place where local community people (shopkeepers/hawkers/vendors)
get engaged in commercial activity to sell their products and earn some money.
Commercial interaction happens between seller and consumer.
The market space has several public facilities like Eating points, ATMs, banks, courier
services, government autonomous bodies, Jan-seva Kendra, Temples, electronic
market, toilets etc. More over market have restaurants/ cafes to cater the users
coming here on high footfall.

MARKET PROFILE

There are shoe shops, garment shops, food shops, toy shops, courier shops and
so on to cater to every need of an individual.
This market is famous among young generation, because availability of trendy
clothes and fashionable items as reasonable price.
Number of street vendors is increasing day by day which create security problem
for market and sometimes they resulted in blocking the road due to usage of
non-allocated zone.

USER PROFILE
The customer of this market is mostly college students.
This market serves all age group and all income group people.
Families also come for shopping, spending some time along with their children.
During morning time, the users start visiting to the market and they look for an
overview of the products sell by the market.
They are not concentrated at one point. Nearby surrounding is also retail space like
showrooms etc. so high income groups visit to that space.
During afternoon time, the users get concentrated towards eating points, atm etc.
During evening time, the users are attracted to eating points, distributed all over the
market space and some start return back.

ACTIVITIES
The market is also place for social interaction between seller and buyers, where
customers bargain for products they want to buy and thus it also creates a bond
between them. There are commercial activities happening with non-commercial
activities.
TEENAGER/ STUDENTS- They love eating, shopping, chatting with each
other, taking & photographs, spending time together.
FAMILIES- Mothers spend time with their children, chatting each other,
shopping, eating, and refreshment from daily routine.
CHILDREN: They enjoy outdoor activities happening in the market.

ANALYSIS
PROBLEMS/ ISSUES IDENTIFICATION
Encroachment by Hawkers, vendors on market pavements which become a
problem for users to move in congested space-“NO SPACE TO WALK”.
Parking problem-no proper parking management as people waste most of
their time in parking their vehicle.

STREETSCAPE is missing: No proper seating space is available nor


maintained if any, so people feel uncomfortable and tired when returning from
market.
During Festivals, the market space become overcrowded.

Unhygienic and not maintained/ cleaned properly by market association.


No proper lighting and signage are installed for comfort of users.
