4. DESCRIPTION.
The OFF-ON switch is a SPST rotary switch used to apply power to the auto-
pilot system and to engage the actuator. The PUSH HEADING HOID switch is
a push-pull switch which energizes the heading hold circuits of the autopilot.
The PULL TURN knob is a zero-center potentiometer mounted on the same shaft
with the heading hold switch. The pilot uses this control to maneuver the
aircraft with the autopilot engaged. The lateral trim tab, mounted below
the PULL TURN potentiometer, is used to obtain straight and level flight
with the PULL TURN knob centered and pulled out. The TRIM control potenti-
ometer corrects for heading drift when the heading hold circuits are engaged.
4.3. Rate Gyro. The Rate Gyro is used for sensing a change in aircraft
attitude. The gyro provides an output signal that is a resultant of the
yaw and roll components of the aircraft attitude. The polarity of this
signal voltage is governed by the direction of the bank. The magnitude of
this signal is proportional to the rate-of-change of both heading and bank
angle. The signal pickoff mechanism is inductively coupled to the gyro,
5-5
adding no observable friction. The unit is mounted on the left side of the
firewall inside the cabin, at a 37.5-degree angle from horizontal. The
37.5-degree angle is necessary to provide both yaw and roll information.
Electrical connections to the gyro are made through two connectors at the
rear of the unit.
4.4. Actuator. The Actuator provides the force to control the ailerons.
The unit comprises an eight-transistor d-c servo amplifier, a servo motor,
and the clutch and gear train parts. The d-c amplifier amplifies the error
signal input to the servo motor. The electrical clutch provides a positive
fail-safe disconnect method between the actuator and the mechanical linkage
to the ailerons. A mechanical slip-clutch enables the pilot to override
the actuator as necessary. Two-part construction permits replacement or
servicing of the motor-amplifier section without disturbing the output
sprocket and its associated rigging. The actuator is mounted in the
right wing just inboard of the aileron and is reached through a rectangular
access plate on the bottom surface of the wing. Electrical connections
to the actuator are made through a nine-pin connector mounted adjacent to
the servo motor; the mechanical connection is through a sprocket protruding
from the stationary half of the actuator. The aileron cables and the output
gear are connected with a chain.
5. PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION.
5.1. General. The Rate Gyro is used to sense a change in the aircraft yaw
or roll attitude. Any change is interpreted as an error signal, which is
coupled to the Controller Amplifier. After amplification, this signal
drives the servo motor which provides the torque to move the ailerons to the
position necessary to correct the attitude error. With the ailerons in this
position, the follow-up (feedback) voltage is equal in magnitude and oppo-
site in polarity to the gyro error signal, and the motor stops driving. As
the bank angle corrects toward the reference, the gyro error signal decreases;
the follow-up signal, which was previously equal to the error signal, causes
the servo motor to drive the ailerons toward their neutral position. The
aircraft flies smoothly into the desired attitude with the follow-up sig-
nal continuously reducing the aileron angle as the attitude error decreases.
As shown in Figure 5-3, with the aircraft in straight and level flight and
the command turn control centered, the output of the chopper-modulator
(error signal) is zero. With a zero error signal, the 4 00-cps amplifier
output, demodulator bridge output, and d-c amplifier output are also zero.
With no d-c input voltage, the servo motor is at rest.
5-6
TURN
CONTROLLER AMPLIFIER ACTUATOR
5.3. Attitude Hold. When the aircraft attitude is changed by a sudden
wind gust or other external causes, the Rate Gyro provides an output signal
proportional to the sum of the yaw and roll components. The Rate Gyro
senses both yaw and roll components because of its installation at a
37.5-degree angle from horizontal.
An inductive pickoff with one primary and two secondary windings is mounted
adjacent to the gimbal. A moveable element attached to the gimbal controls
the coupling between the primary and secondary windings of the pickoff.
When the aircraft is in straight and level flight, coupling between the
primary and both secondary windings is equal. If the attitude of the air-
craft changes, introducing a roll or yaw rate or both, a corresponding
deflection of the gimbal will result. This deflection causes a motion of
the pickoff element which alters the coupling between the primary and
secondary windings. Increased coupling between the primary and one sec-
ondary winding and decreased coupling between the primary and the other
secondary winding cause a voltage to appear at the secondary winding out-
put. The relative phase of this voltage depends on the direction of roll
and yaw. The magnitude of the voltage is proportional to the rate of
change of roll and yaw.
With the aircraft in a bank, the output of the rate gyro (roll rate plus
yaw rate) is demodulated and coupled through a sensitivity control to the
chopper-modulator. The sensitivity control is factory-adjusted to limit
the demodulator output to a voltage representing approximately a standard
rate turn (180 degrees per minute). The chopper-modulator modulates
400-cps voltage with the roll-rate-plus-yaw-rate signal. This error sig-
nal is amplified, demodulated, and coupled to a d-c servo amplifier. The
servo amplifier output is applied to the servo motor which drives the
gear train to reposition the ailerons.
The turn command control (PULL TURN) mounted on the front panel of the
Controller Amplifier permits manual control of the aircraft with the auto-
pilot engaged. Movement of this control introduces an error signal to the
5-9
chopper-modulator. This error signal, which is interpreted as a roll rate
plus yaw rate, is cancelled by an equal and opposite signal from the rate
gyro. The resulting signal voltage initiates motion of the servo motor
and a corresponding motion of the follow-up potentiometer to return the
aircraft to the reference attitude.
5.4 Heading Hold. When the Controller Amplifier PUSH HEADING HOLD switch
is pushed in, the heading hold circuits of the Cessna Nav-O-Matic are
connected. These circuits keep the aircraft on the selected reference
heading by demodulating and coupling the rate gyro error signal output to
the integrator. The output of the integrator is a voltage proportional
to the amount of deviation from the selected heading and is limited to
provide a corrective action no greater than a standard rate turn. This
heading deviation voltage is coupled to the chopper-modulator which inter-
prets this signal as an error, causing the servo motor to establish a
new aircraft attitude. The new attitude is maintained and the aircraft
banks until it is back on the reference heading. With the aircraft on the
reference heading the heading error is zero, resulting in a zero output
from the integrator.
The heading trim control is used to correct for small errors that may be
introduced by the integrator.

13. REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES.
13.1. General. The units of the Nav-O-Matic may be serviced in the field;
however, replacement parts must be identical to the original parts for
optimum performance. After replacing any part, check performance of the
entire system for satisfactory operation.
13.2. Location of Units. Figure 5-2 shows the approximate location of units
in the aircraft. The Actuator is located in the right wing, inboard of
the aileron, and is reached through an access plate on the underside of
the wing. The Controller Amplifier is mounted in the radio equipment portion
of the instrument panel, directly above the throttle control. The Rate Gyro
is mounted on the left side of the firewall inside the cabin, above and -to
the left of the left rudder pedal.
The Actuator contains eight transistors and two crystal diodes. Two of
the transistors and both crystal diodes are mounted on the main terminal
board and soldered directly into the circuit. The remaining six transistors
are plug-in types mounted directly on the actuator case.
The Controller Amplifier contains ten transistors and ten crystal diodes,
all mounted on two printed circuit boards and soldered directly into the
circuit.

13.6. Servo Motor Brush Replacement. The servo motor brushes should be
replaced when faulty operation is suspected and also after 500 hours of
operation.
Step 1. Remove screws (16, Figure 5-5) and displace terminal board
(15).
Step 3. Remove two screws (44), washers (45), plate (43), and in-
sulator (46).
Step 4. Slide case (47) and case insulator (48) off motor.
Step 6. Blow carbon dust from commutator. Install new brush and
reassemble motor by performing steps of disassembly in reverse.
5-26
Reinstallation of Actuator in Aircraft (Cont.)
Note
Step 5. Remove gust lock and leave Controller Amplifier OFF-ON switch
ON. Control wheel should remain neutral.
13.8. Removal of Drive Chain and Control Cables. To remove the drive chain
and the control cables without removing the actuator, proceed as follows:
Step 4. After the chain and cables are replaced, manually move the
control wheel and check for proper response of control surfaces. Using a
tensiometer, adjust turnbuckle to obtain cable tension of approximately 40
pounds.
5-27
13.9. Removal of Controller Amplifier. The controller amplifier is attached
to a bracket with the two screws normally used to attach the dust cover to
the unit. The bracket is permanently attached to the rear of the instru-
ment panel, and is not normally removed once it is installed. To remove the
controller amplifier from the bracket, proceed as follows:
Step 2. Remove four nuts on front side of mount. Slide rate gyro
and attached front plate from mount.
Step 3. Detach front plate from rate gyro by removing four phillips
head screws.
13.12. Disassembly of Rate Gyro. If the rate gyro is faulty, the unit
should be carefully packed and shipped to the factory for repair. If this
is not practical, work on the unit should be performed only by personnel
fully qualified for the repair and testing of gyros.
13.13. Reinstallation of Rate Gyro. For proper operation, the rate gyro
must be inclined 37.5 degrees from horizontal. When properly installed
the mounting bracket provides mounting at this angle. The rate gyro must
be reinstalled in the mounting with the surface stamped TOP facing up.

Note
Note
Step 10. Level airplane with PULL-TURN knob. Then rotate knob full
clockwise to establish right turn, and watch test meter. The needle should
deflect to the right and then immediately start returning to the reference
voltage obtained in Step 8. Meter should stabilize at the reference voltage
(-1/10 + 0 volt).
Step 11. If meter returns to reference voltage, or not more than 1/10
volt beyond the reference voltage, in both left and right turns, the Nav-O-Matic
is adjusted correctly. If not, the lateral trim tab was not in a centered
position and the following should be performed:
Note
Step 12. Re-check meter reading in both right and left turns. Then
check both right and left turns with reference to turn and bank indicator.
The turn rates in both directions should be approximately equal (within 1/4
needle width).
5-34
14. OPERATIONAL CHECK (Cont.)
Step 14. If heading TRIM knob is offset more than one graduation for
proper heading hold, loosen set screw and rotate knob to center position,
without moving shaft, and tighten set screw.
Step 15. If, after Step 3, the lateral trim tab is more than 15 ° off
of vertical, with aircraft in level flight, reposition actuator in accord-
ance with paragraph 13.7, after landing.
Note
14.1. Use of the Nav-O-Matic Trim Knob. The heading TRIM knob is used to
balance theinternal electrical circuits of the Nav-O-Matic system. Temperature
changes or environmental conditions may cause the internal circuitry of the
system to become electrically unbalanced. Through use of the trim knob, the
internal circuitry can be adjusted so that the airplane has no tendency to
drift due to unbalanced electrical signals.
With the trim knob adjusted so that the internal circuits are balanced, the
autopilot will make corrective action only on airplane attitude changes.
In this condition, the Nav-O-Matic will hold a heading for extended periods
of time.
Step 1. With aircraft trimmed for level flight at desired heading, push
PULL-TURN knob in.
Note
Step 2. Note initial heading and observe any noticeable heading drift.
Do not be nasty about adjusting trim knob. Allow several minutes to determine
the rate-of-drift.
Note
5-35
14.1. Use of the Nav-0-Matic Trim Knob (Cont.)
Note
Note
Note
Step 7. Once the trim knob has been set to hold a heading, the unit
should operate for extended periods of time without changing the knob set-
ting. Do not touch the trim knob unless you are sure that the aircraft is
drifting, in level flight, in respect to the magnetic compass. Do not be
impatient. The Nav-O-Matic temporarily may drift 1 ° to 5 ° to one side of
course due to rough air. But, it should correct with an opposite drift to the
other side and then return to-your original heading. In rough air, the
Nav-O-Matic will "average out" on your heading. Temporary oscillation from
course is normal.
5-36
14.1. Use of the Nav-O-Matic Trim Knob (Cont.)
Note
Whenever units of the Cessna Nav-O-Matic have been removed and reinstalled
or ground adjusted, the following checks should be performed; (Refer to
Figure 5-5 for location of Nav-O-Matic controls.)
Note
Step 1. With the PULL-TURN knob pulled out, set the PULL-TURN knob
and the lateral trim tab to center. Set heading TRIM knob to center.
Note
Step 2. Turn OFF-ON switch ON. Servo motor should run only long
enough to move ailerons to the position which normally results in straight
and level flight.
Note
5-37
15. OPERATIONAL CHECK (Cont.)
Step 3. If servo motor moves the ailerons too far, turn OFF-ON switch
OFF and position the ailerons for straight and level flight. By trial and
error, set lateral trim tab to the position where the ailerons will not
move when OFF-ON switch is turned ON. (Depending on temperature and con-
dition of the aileron cables, the optimum position of the lateral trim tab
may be with the tab slightly off center.) If this result cannot be achieved,
the wing actuator unit is not positioned correctly. Remove and reposition
actuator in accordance with paragraph 13.7 of the Cessna Nav-O-Matic
Maintenance Manual.
Step 4. Set OFF-ON switch ON. Turn PULL-TURN knob to "R." Servo
motor should run, right aileron should deflect up, left aileron should de-
flect down, aircraft control wheel should rotate right and slowly return
part way back to level flight position.
Step 5. Turn PULL-TURN knob to "L." Servo motor should run, right
aileron should deflect down, left aileron should deflect up, aircraft con-
trol wheel should rotate left and slowly return part way back to level flight
position. Set PULL-TURN knob at center.

Note
Note
Step 8. Using the rudder pedals only, yaw the aircraft while taxiing.
Observe the aileron motion. For a right yaw, the right aileron should deflect
down and the left aileron should deflect up. For a left yaw, the left aileron
should deflect down and the right aileron should deflect up.

explained in paragraph 13.7.
Step 7. If turn rates are not within specified range, refer to para-
graph 15.1 for flight adjustment of controller.
Note
Step 8. Trim aircraft for straight and level flight at desired heading.
Push PULL-TURN knob in. Note initial heading and observe any noticeable
heading drift. Correct any drift with heading TRIM knob. Refer to para-
graph 14.1 for heading TRIM knob operating procedure.
