Tutorial 6

Submit Question 2.
1) A liquid feed at its bubble point is to be distilled in a tray tower to produce the distillate and bottoms
as follows:

Composition
Component
Feed Distillate Bottoms
A 0.047 0.1260 0
B 0.072 0.1913 0.001
C 0.881 0.6827 0.999

Average α values to be used are αA = 4.19, αB = 1.58, αC = 1.00.

For a feed rate of 100 mol/h, calculate:

a) the mol/h of distillate and bottoms

b) number of stages at total reflux (Nmin)
c) the distribution of component A in the bottoms
d) Rmin and the number of stages at 1.25Rmin

2) The feed to a conventional distillation column and the relative volatilities are shown in the table
below.

Component 𝒙𝒙𝑭𝑭𝒊𝒊 𝜶𝜶𝒊𝒊

1 0.05 2.1
2 0.42 1.7
3 0.46 1.0
4 0.07 0.65

The recovery of component 2 in the distillate is 99 percent, and 98 percent of component 3 is to leave
in the bottoms. Calculate:

a) The amount and composition of distillate and bottoms products. State any assumptions made.
b) The minimum number of plates
c) Minimum reflux ratio if the feed is liquid at the bubble point
d) The number of plates required if a R = 1.3Rmin is to be used
e) The location of feed tray
