Facebook ranked No. 76 in the 2018 Fortune 500 list of the largest United States
corporations by revenue.[151] Most comes from advertising.[152][153]
Significant revenue comes from bulk data access sold to the third parties. [154][155]

Number of advertisers
In February 2015, Facebook announced that it had reached two million active advertisers
with most of the gain coming from small businesses. An active advertiser is an advertiser
that has advertised on the Facebook platform in the last 28 days. [156] In March 2016,
Facebook announced that it reached three million active advertisers with more than 70%
from outside the US.[157] Prices for advertising follow a variable pricing model based on ad
auction bids, potential engagement levels of the advertisement itself. Similar to other onlien
advertising platforms like google and twitter, targeting of advertisements is one of the chief
merits of advertising visa a vis traditional mass advertising modes like television and print.
Marketing on facebook is employed through two methods based on the surfing habits, likes
and shares, and purchasing data of the audience, namely targeted audiences and "look
alike" audiences.[158]
Mergers and acquisitions

Offices
Users outside of the US and Canada contract with Facebook's Irish subsidiary "Facebook
Ireland Limited". This allows Facebook to avoid US taxes for all users in Europe, Asia,
Australia, Africa and South America. Facebook is making use of the Double Irish
arrangement which allows it to pay just about 2–3% corporation tax on all international
revenue.[159] In 2010, Facebook opened its fourth office, in Hyderabad[160][161][162]and the first
in Asia.[163]
Facebook's Hyderabad center houses online advertising and developer support teams and
provide support to users and advertisers.[164] In India Facebook is registered as 'Facebook
India Online Services Pvt Ltd'.[165][166][167] It also has support centers
in Dublin, California, Irelandand Austin, Texas.[168]
Facebook opened its London headquarters in 2017 in Fitzrovia in central London. Facebook
opened an office in Cambridge, Massachusettsin 2018. The offices were initially home to
Facebook's "Connectivity Lab", a group focused on bringing Internet access those who do
not have access to the Internet.[169]
Sheryl Sandberg. Sheryl Kara Sandberg (born August 28, 1969) is an
American technology executive, activist, author, and billionaire. She is the
chief operating officer (COO) of Facebook and founder of Leanin.org

As COO, Sandberg oversees advertising and is rightly praised for

masterminding an explosion in revenue. But she also leads legal and policy
at Facebook, making her largely responsible for rising regulatory risks,
souring government relationships and a 39 per cent slump
in Facebook's stock since late July.
A January 2009 Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used social
network service by worldwide monthly active users, followed by MySpace.[9]
Entertainment Weekly put it on its end-of-the-decade "best-of" list, saying, "How
on earth did we stalk our exes, remember our co-workers' birthdays, bug our
friends, and play a rousing game of Scrabulous before Facebook?"[10] Quantcast
estimates Facebook has 135.1 million monthly unique U.S. visitors in October
2010.[11] According to Social Media Today as of April 2010, it is estimated that
41.6% of the U.S. population has a Facebook account.

HRM
HRM places greater emphasis on a number of responsibilities and functions such as
relocation, orientation and translation services to help employees adapt to a new
and different environment outside their own country.
• Selection of employees requires careful evaluation of the personal characteristics
of the candidate and his/her spouse.
• Training and development extends beyond information and orientation training to
include sensitivity training and field experiences that will enable the manager to
understand cultural differences better. Managers need to be protected from career
development risks, re-entry problems and culture shock.
• To balance the pros and cons of home country and host country evaluations,
performance evaluations should combine the two sources of appraisal information.
• Compensation systems should support the overall strategic intent of the
organization but should be customized for local conditions.
• In many European countries - Germany for one, law establishes representation.
Organizations typically negotiate the agreement with the unions at a national level.
In Europe it is more likely for salaried employees and managers to be unionized.

• Use workforce skills and abilities in order to exploit environmental opportunities

and neutralize threats.
• Employ innovative reward plans that recognize employee contributions and grant
enhancements.
• Indulge in continuous quality improvement through TQM and HR contributions like
training, development, counseling, etc
• Utilize people with distinctive capabilities to create unsurpassed competence in an
area, e.g. Xerox in photocopiers, 3M in adhesives, Telco in trucks etc.
• Decentralize operations and rely on self-managed teams to deliver goods in
difficult times e.g. Motorola is famous for short product development cycles. It has
quickly commercialized ideas from its research labs.
• Lay off workers in a smooth way explaining facts to unions, workers and other
affected groups e.g. IBM , Kodak, Xerox, etc.

a) Policies- HR policies based on trust, openness, equity and consensus.

b) Motivation- Create conditions in which people are willing to work with zeal,
initiative and enthusiasm; make people feel like winners.
c) Relations- Fair treatment of people and prompt redress of grievances would pave
the way for healthy work-place relations.
d) Change agent- Prepare workers to accept technological changes by clarifying
doubts.
e) Quality Consciousness- Commitment to quality in all aspects of personnel
administration will ensure success.
Due to the new trends in HR, in a nutshell the HR manager should treat people as
resources, reward them equitably, and integrate their aspirations with corporate
goals through suitable HR policies.
