Dewitt Jones has very beautifully and in very simple words described creativity.

He says,
“Creativity is not something magical and extraordinary. It is something we all have within
ourselves, we just need to fall in love with the world.” It is just a matter of change of our
perspectives. He has tried to focus the attention to things we mostly ignore-our everyday lives.
Creativity is all around us.
While I was shopping on amazon, I came across a story of a women who had no degree, how
she became an entrepreneur and now owns a brand that is worth chores.
She started a business out of waste temple flowers. She hired people who would collect waste
flowers near and around the ghats if the ganga and the temple. Out of those waste flowers they
make incense sticks. The waste pickers are a key part of their operation. They have not only
provided employment to them but have also taken a step towards preserving the environment
and reducing waste and water pollution. Not only the had a different perspective but her love for
the nature and the environment.
Dewitt Jones talks about how just changing the perspective and capturing the essence of
something can do miracles.
A brand called ecosave sells ecofriendly pencils on amazon made out of recycled paper. The
pack of 3 containing 10 pencils is sold at a price of 382 rupees. I'm sure the manufacturing cost
would not be more than 1-2 per piece.
It is a great initiative towards saving trees and not only this, each pencil contains seeds which
germinate within a week. Just by changing their perspective, they were able to analyse the
problem with the marketing and manufacturing of pencils and turn it into a business.
Just by observing things and people around us can give us do much inspiration. All the simple
things around us are our inspiration.
Just as Dewitt Jones says, every problem is an opportunity. In both the above cases, both the
brand owners understood the problem and turned it into an opportunity.
He also talks about the importance of making mistakes and that there is always more than one
right answer.
He compares his 3 photographs where he has captured the essence of the place, the river and
the people associated to it. The first picture he took was absolutely dull, it had no drama, no
magic in it.
But after he changed his perspective, he captured the same place at different timing, with
different lighting and perspective. And that dull boring picture looked absolutely magical.
He talks about how ordinary can become extraordinary. We don't need to search for
extraordinary, but look for extraordinary in the ordinary.
Creativity is something we all have within ourselves. We just need to change our perspective,
our vision. Make mistakes and learn from them.
