Assignment Title: Anglo-Saxons values in Beowulf

Student Writing Goal: My writing goal is to score an 80% or higher on my mid-unit and end of unit assessments. I
would also like to improve on my writing skills and to stay on task with the prompt. Lastly I want to improve on my
vocabulary skills.

Instructions:
1) Re-read the paper (and teacher feedback).
2) Complete this reflection sheet.

What was the purpose of this writing assignment?

The purpose of this writing assignment was to highlight what values the Anglo-Saxons valued. Beowulf has
been told for so long that no one knows who even started it. In the poem, Beowulf they show that they have
strong Christian values. They also believe bravery and acceptance is an important trait of a leader. The poem
had many highlighted values in it.

How did you perform in relation to the expectations of the writing rubric?
I performed in relation to the expectations of the writing rubric pretty well. I highlighted the values I thought
the Anglo-Saxons valued the most of which was loyalty, bravery, and awareness. These values are everything
Beowulf has as a hero. Beowulfs men were loyal to him, especially his right-hand man and how Beowulf is
shows loyalty to the king for asking permission to fight Grendal. All Beowulf shows is bravery throughout
the whole poem; major trait as a hero. Lastly acceptance, Beowulf explains how every battle shall be left in
the fate of god, even at the end of the poem he is okay with his fate that was given to him.

What aspect of this piece did you do well? (give example/quotes to support claims)
An aspect I personally feel I did well in was my thesis and the topics I choose for my body paragraphs, “ The
Anglo-Saxons upheld and discuss examples of the values of loyalty, bravery, and awareness”. Mainly
throughout the poem these three values on continuously brought out through the acts of Beowulf. I could
have replaced awareness with beliefs because Christianity and Paganism is a big deal throughout the poem as
well. I felt like I cited good evidence for the three values I choose as well. I brought how Beowulf always
fights in the fate of god and that alone can be an example of all four of those beliefs.

Why have you/haven’t you chosen to revise this writing assignment?

To reflect on how I structured my essay with the acknowledgment of the values of the Anglo-Saxons. To go
back and reflect on the grammar errors. A mistake I kept making throughout the essay was the way I add or
do not add commas in the right places. Another mistake I keep seeing myself make is the way I cite my work.
What will you do better in your next writing assignment, and how will I do it?
I will do better by having a more advance vocabulary and staying on task with the prompt. Sometimes I have
tendency of going off topic. I need to also learn how to use my commas correctly and when to end a sentence
and start a new one.

To what degree of success did you achieve your previously stated goal(s)?
I got a 85% on this paper which is higher than my goal was. I used good structure and work efficiently on this
paper. I also put a good amount of effort in. Personally, I am Christian so believe in some of the thing in the
story so I felt like I had a connection with the story. Paganism is literally the complete opposite of Christian
beliefs so I had a great understanding on why the monsters were known as evil. Especially how Grendal was
the offspring of the devil.

3) Revise the paper accordingly and highlight any changes.

4) Submit the revision and this reflection sheet.
