Tutoring

For my tutoring sessions I helped my brother, Michael who is in Eighth grade. I helped

Michael with his homework assignments, studied for quizzes and tests, and even helped him

complete a history project. On the days I tutored Michael, I would pick him up from school and

we would go home. We mainly focused on any subjects that he had a test in that week or any

subject that he was falling behind in. To me, it seemed as though Michael was having a harder

time with math. For this subject I showed him how useful and helpful Kahn academy can be. He

had never used Kahn academy before, so I had showed him that he can just go by grade or he

can specifically look for topics like polynomials or slope. We searched and watched a few videos

on slope, because he seemed to really be struggling and my tips and advice just weren’t helping

with his confusion. He has told me that now that he knows that Kahn academy can be so helpful

that he plans to use it more often when he is struggling. Another useful piece of technology we

used for his vocabulary words was Quizlet. We used the flashcard function to study his words.

He had heard of quizlet and used it to help find answers to questions before, but he had stated

that he had never used it to study like we did. He claimed that it was very useful!

I gained a lot from this experience. I have learned to be more patient and understanding

of those who are not on the same pace or level. What I mean by this is, no matter how old

someone is you never know what level of math, reading, science, and etc. they may be at.
Having patience and being supportive is very helpful in situations like this because those

students who are falling behind need someone to walk them through the steps in order for

them to catch up.
