LAB NO 4:- Basic Router Configuration

1. Objective
• Understand different routers.
• Use basic router configuration commands.
• Configuration of multiple interfaces.

2. Introduction
• User mode: -
Router is the user mode, i.e. default prompt. It means that whenever o
router boots successfully it lands into the user mode. Router cannot be
configured from this mode, but it is used for just monitoring purposes.
We cannot see save and change the configuration of the router. We can
run some commands such as ping, telnet etc.
• Privilege mode: -
It is the administrative mode, we can check whether the settings and
configuration made have been implemented or not. If it is new router
all the interfaces are by default shutdown. It is used to see and save
configuration.
• Global Configuration mode: -
As the name indicates, it is a global configuration mode i.e. we can
configure any interface by this mode, by just entering the interface
mode. We can change any configuration of the router such as ip-address
or password etc.

3. Lab exercises
• Set hostname
• Set password
• Set banner
• Configure multiple interfaces in a router

4. Procedure
• Set hostname: -

Click on router itself. The new popup window appears. There are
several tabs on this window. Click on “CLI” tab for setting the
hostname.

• Set password: -

• Set banner

Basic router configuration Figure 3

If we type “copy running-config startup-config” after setting banner

then after restarting the router whatever we make changes in the
configuration of the router is not removed.
• Configure multiple interfaces in a router
a. Connecting with end systems
Select the “connections” then select “console” connections for
connecting the routers with end system.

Click on router the next options appear click on “console” option.

After this click on end systems the next options appear click on
“RS232” option to provide connection between router and console
system.

b. Connecting with another router

Choose “network devices” then click on any router.

Basic router configuration Figure 6

After choosing the router then connect both routers. By clicking on

the routers itself. The new popup window appears go to the top and
click on physical to attach the serial interface “NIM-2T”. Move your
mouse pointer to the “NIM-2T” drag it and drop to the back of the
router.

After attaching the interface

After this now we connect both routers. Go select the connections

then select “Serial DCE” to connect both routers.

After clicking “Serial DCE” then click on routers the next options
appear click on “Serial0/1/0” don’t select any other options. Other
options are not used to connect both routers. When you select
“Serial0/1/0” the wire is drag with your mouse pointer to connect

another router. The same method on another router. Now is the time
come assign real ip-address on both routers.
Assigning ip-address on 1st router

Basic router configuration Figure 10

I am already set configurations on the 1 st router according to my

own decision such as setting hostname, set password and set banner
etc. The same method applied on the 2nd router. The interface is used
“se0/1/0” because we connected the “Serial0/1/0”.

Assigning ip-address on 2nd router

Now both router state changed to up. When the 2nd router state
change to up the previous 1st router states also changed to up
automatically. If the 2nd router state is not change to up then the
previous 1st router is not changed to up.
c. Connecting with switch
Go to network devices then choose switch. After choosing the switch
there are multiple switch available on the right to choose it according
to your own desire.

After choosing the switch. Now connect switch with router. Click
on connections then choose “copper straight-through” to connect
switch with router.

After selecting “copper straight-through” click on router the next

option appears. Click on “gigabitethernet0/0/0” option to connect
with switch. Don’t click on any other option for connecting with
switch. Now the wire is drag with your mouse pointer click on
switch the next option appears. Click on “fastethernet0/1” to connect
with router.

The switch is successfully connected with router.

5. Results
Ping from one router to another router
a. From 1st router to another router

c. Successful ping

6. Conclusions
The overall of these experiments we learn about different routers. We use
basic commands to configure router such as setting hostname, set password
and banners etc. We also configure multiple interfaces on the router to
connect another router. This is our total lab experiment.
