DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
Test/Quiz - 1, February 2017
PH202/ Physics: Classical Physics - I
Duration: 50 Minutes Max. Marks: 25

Reg. No.

Notes:
• Answer all questions, briefly to the point, wherein sections I & II carry 8 marks each and section III
carries 9 marks.
• Clearly mention the assumptions made (if any) in derivations or solving problems.

I. Answer below given small questions with short and precise statements. 2 marks × 4 = 8 marks
(a) List the properties of vector addition ? Graphically show how vector subtraction is different from vector
addition ?
(b) Briefly describe the physical cenarios where both types of vector multiplication would be used ?
(c) Choose two different types of collisions and write down the corresponding conservation laws ?
(d) Define pure rotation ? Give one example you come across in your day-to-day life ?

II. Answer below given questions with concise elaborations. 4 marks × 2 = 8 marks
(a) Derive the expression for acceleration in polar coordinates in terms of 4 major contributions ? Also
describe those terms using geometrical interpretation ?
(b) Describe atleast four rotational dynamical variable ? Relate them to their counterparts i.e., translational
dynamical variables ?

III. Solve below given numerical problems with systematic steps. 3 marks × 3 = 9 marks
(a) A stone dropped from top of the Eiffel tower with initial velocity v0 = (0, 2, -3) m/s. It accelerates
(downward) with acceleration a = (0, 0, -1.3) m/s2 . Find its velocity after 5.67 s ?
(b) A box of mass mB = 150kg rests on backside of the truck (of mass mT = 360kg) that moves with friction
less wheels. Assume that friction between the box and truck bed is very large so that box do not slide.
When a worker pulls the box with force 210N , what would be the frictional force between the box and
truck bed ? And what is the acceleration of the truck ?

(c) For a rectangular slab of length a and breadth b, determine the Moment of Inertia along the axis
perpendicular to its one of the surface, and the location of the axis is at the edge of the slab ?
